Westbrook for Rondo should have happened a few years ago, when Pierce and KG were aging but still effective. Rondo's discounted contract would have also allowed them to keep Harden in spite of P:lolrkin's contract, since they seem to cheap too amnesty

If you have two high end PGs already, you don't trade PGs. They could have kept Harden and released Russell, but teams and fans are often fooled by that negro anger and aggression that players like RW and Garnett display. They don't look at reality. It's a business after all, and winning doesn't pay the bills.

they could have kept Westbrook, Harden, and Durant if they didn't give Perkins that stupid contract, or if they decided to bite the bullet and amnesty him. I think a team with Rondo, Harden, Durant, and Ibaka could have been nightmarish defensively (remember, Harden was actually a solid defender with the Thunder, and has fallen off a cliff since taking a lead offensive role, much like Kobe, who was a great defensive player early in his career when Shaq was carrying the load).

a cheaper replacement? it doesn't take much to replace/replicate Perkins' production/impact on OKC for the past 2 seasons. more minutes for Collison? i never implied that the empty roster spot would go unaddressed just because they didn't give Perkins a ridiculous 5 year 40 million dollar extension. i can go back and take a look at FA's around that time, but Perkins has been a net negative for the team the past 2 seasons

Perkins averaged 25 minutes per game last year, 19 per game so far this year. I don't think its difficult to replace his "production" with replacement level talent. Besides, I think the dropoff from Perkins to replacement is well worth being able to keep Harden in addition to Ibaka, Durant and westbrook/rondo

When Perkins is on the floor they are playing 4-5 on offense. He doesnt shoot further than 10 feet and is still sub 50% from the field. he's also a slow footed defender without much height, or any athleticism to make up for it. i really don't think it would be remotely difficult to replace him with waiver talent

But you cannot just replace him this year. You have to consider they had no backup center going forward. They weren't going to trade Serge, and just needed a serviceable backup. His deal expires after next season.

I highly HIGHLY doubt you or I or both of us have put more thought and weighed more stats and facts about this than their front office. They made the deal for a reason, even if it's not apparent to you now. They weren't going anywhere with Kristic, who was already making close to 6m a year.

Kristic being overpaid doesn't make it OK for Perkins to be overpaid. And if you're going to play the whole "their front office weighed more stats and facts than us" card then by that logic we should pretty much never criticize a personnel move for any sports franchise or say what they could or should have done. Perkins is one of the worst centers in the NBA, and for the 8 million they were paying him, they could have kept Harden and gotten another equally awful center for 2 mil or so

free agents in 2011 that could have been had for much less than 8 million included Kyrylo Fesenko, Francisco Elson, Alexis Ajinca, Malik Allen, Dan Gadzuric, Joel Pryzbilla, Nenad Kristic.

Free agents in 2012 included Jermaine O'Neal, Ryan Hollins, Nazr Mohammed, Marcus Camby, Elton Brand, JJ Hickson.

They could have kept Harden and taken one or two of these guys over the past 2 seasons. These aren't exactly all-star caliber players, but replacing Perkins' production is not a tall task. The FA class in 2011 was pretty weak, but I think the "dropoff" from Perkins to one of those guys is well worth being able to keep Harden

excellent retort. i wonder what you think Perkins brings to the table. he is as laughable as many of those guys.

i'm simply arguing that having one of those replacements in addition to keeping James Harden is better than just having Perkins do nothing for them while gobbling up 8 million per year. if you have an argument outside of emoticons, i'm all ears

basically it comes down to whether or not you believe that Perkins > Harden + replacement center
