-First two commitments came after the Feb 22nd Junior Day, the third later on that Saturday and the last Sunday. First time ever for UTSA that a player has committed on the spot after Junior Day.

-Shorts and Hamilton are teammates of '14 commit Greg Campbell. Nice little pipeline being set up at Atascocita.

-D'Anthony Hopkins is a Top 100 propect in Texas if Im not mistaken. Not sure if UTSA will be able to hang on to him.

Great video..Made it to a couple of games last season and it was fun to see a team play with as much heart and determination as they did. Hopefully be able to see UTSA play in a bowl game this year..

Hopefully be able to see UTSA play in a bowl game this year..

Thats the plan. Already broke records with how fast we moved up to FBS and the solid attendance, next record is to become the fastest start-up to reach a bowl game which we would do if we achieved it this year. Took Florida Atlantic 7 years, we'd be doing it in only our 4th.

Should be the favorites to win C-USA West as well so a conference title shouldnt be out of the realms of possibility tbh.

New alternate grey uniform (similar to the one Tennessee used last year) and white helmet are being added to the uniform options apparently:

Meh, its for the players. They like this kind of stuff. I like it as long as its a once a year thing which Im pretty sure is the case.

Very nice body of work FKLA. Very nice.

I don't think there is a college coach or knowledgeable college football fan that is not amazed at the program Coker has put together in very short order. I do hope he stays around another 6 years to age 70 before retiring. And he should have a building named after him for taking a start up that didn't own a football helmet to the level he has.

No doubt. Coker and Lynn Hickey are by far the best things to ever happen to UTSA Athletics. Im hoping something in the new athletic complex on Hausman gets named after them.

About ten days late but some pics and quotes from Junior Day...

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BhF6WutCEAAgyB7.jpg:small

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BhG8xgdCYAAuGHh.jpg:small

-WR commit Furquan Shorts (above), per Rivals: "UTSA offered me today. And after visiting today I knew I wanted to go there! I felt like I was a part of the family. And as soon as they offered, I said I wanted to commit. Having Greg (Campbell) there makes the commitment so much better." - Shorts

-RB commit D'Anthony Hopkins, per Scout:“I just fell in love with campus and I really loved the coaches. I just really liked the program. It’s great. What they have to offer is tremendous,” said Hopkins.

-WR commit Tre Hamilton, per Scout: “Everybody was so family-based,” said Hamilton. “Everything was really nice and impressive. They showed us the weight room and talked about some additions they’re making. Just overall, the campus was really nice.”

-WR/RB commit Matt Guidry, per Scout: "I was talking to my parents and being real close to home, playing division one football and staying in Texas was big. Committing wasn't on my mind. When I got home I thought about how it was a great school, great campus, very nice and I just want to go there. They said they'll most likely use me a slot WR."

Billy McCrary III-Rouse HS (Leander, Tx), per Rivals:

"It was a really good visit," McCrary said. "I got to talk with the coaches and see the campus and the dorms. I want to make my decision my the time I would be taking official visits so I wanted to see as much as I could and learn as much as I could about the program. It was very impressive." ... "Being wanted is important to anyone. You always want to go to a place that wants you there. UTSA has treated me and my family great. I'm really looking forward to building that relationship and meeting the new wide receivers coach at spring practice." ..."I love it. Rouse was a new high school when I started. We've only been around for a few years too. We've played with that chip on our shoulder the whole time because of it. It seems like UTSA has that same vibe and that is something I really like about them. They have something to prove and so do I."

Biggest playmaker out of the players offered imo (other than Ketchum who is a national recruit). Ran a 4.38 at the US Army Combine in the Alamdome a couple of months ago. SMU, Texas State and North Texas have also offered.

“Coach Eliano pulled me aside when I first walked in and told me that Coach Coker was going to offer me. A few minutes later, Coach Coker told me that they had a scholarship for me. They did a great job. They were very proud of what they had to offer,” said Martel. ... “I like the coaches a lot, the campus is really nice,” said Martel. "The players sounded like they what they’ve done there and are looking to improve some more. But right now I don't have a timetable for making a decision."

"They have a very nice weight room. I would love to go see their dorms. I like how the campus is, it's not too big, it's just set up well," said Levine.

QB Manny Harris-Copperas Cove (Copperas Cove, Tx), per Rivals:

"The Junior Day went pretty well. The coaches really like me and I really like them. UTSA had a nice campus and nice facilities. And they are the first school to offer, so that's great as well." ... "The coaches said they really liked my play on the field and they they want me to be around as much as possible at camps and for visits. And they really want me to be a Roadrunner! But before I decide, I want to watch the spring game and get to San Antonio in the summer to get a better idea on whether it's a place that I see myself being at for the next 4-5 years. But UTSA is up there right now for me, and I like the way they are building their football program." - Harris

QB Da'Shawn Key-Brennan HS (San Antonio, Tx), per Scout:

"I talked to Coach Coker and Coach Brown. They were pretty cool. I really like the coaches. They were real down to earth, laid back, it was easy to have a conversation. I enjoy talking to them. They like me as a Dual Threat Quarterback," ... "The campus is pretty big, but what surprised me is that Coach Brown told me they're a balanced run/pass, 50-50. I really liked it a lot. I haven't decided yet, but it's definitely one of the serious options I'm considering," said Key.

The 'Runners are his first offer, but schools such as BYU, Arkansas, and SMU have shown solid interest.

DE Tyrell Thompson-Copperas Cove HS (Copperas Cove, Tx), per Scout:

"It was amazing! Being there, meeting some coaches, seeing them face to face, and seeing what UTSA is all about. Talking to Coach Coker he sounded really interested and wants me to leave my mark on UTSA," ... "We didn't go to the Dome. We saw the campus lifestyle, more of campus dealings than football stuff. It surprised me, really caught my eye on what they do. How spread out the campus is, it seems like a good place and could be a home in the future," said Thompson.

The 'Runners are his second offer of the young recruiting cycle. Texas State was the first to extend. Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas have all shown strong interest already.

"I was shocked when they told me. It was towards the end, they met with me and my parents when Coach Coker offered. I was right next to CJ when they offered. They offered us together," ... "It was a nice campus. When I talked to the players I learned some things I could learn to bring back for my last year of HS. They're having some camps in June and they want me at the spring game," said Jones.

I'm only posting this here because there was a rumor that there was a chance he might transfer to utsa.

I didn't really think there was a chance in hell myself.

And what were the conditions I gave for that ?

"Nice campus?" Did these guys not visit any other schools?

The newer buildings are nice imo. But I'm sure some of the quotes are just a case of being polite, the facilities comment was the strangest to me.

Read that Brewer is being blocked from every Big 12 and CUSA Texas team, which includes UTSA. Hope Kliff eases up and allows him to play in CUSA. I think we'd have a legit shot at landing him tbh.

S Jacob Murray-Coppell HS (Coppell, Tx), per Scout:

“The Safeties coach came up to me and told me congratulations that I have an official offer. Then we went to talk to Coach Coker who told me they wanted me at UTSA,” ... “They did a pretty good job,” Murray said of the Junior Day. “Right when I got there, the coaches introduced themselves to me and welcomed me. Right when I got there I felt like I was family." ... “It was pretty nice. The facilities are pretty nice. I like the campus, it’s pretty big. And it’s in Texas, so that is a positive,” ... “I’m going to go through the process, I’m not going to make any decisions this early,” said Murray.

UTSA is Murray’s first offer. However, he has had interest from Texas State, Rice, Yale, and LA Tech.

Dont think most sports fans in SA realize the kind of upside the program has or know about the things theyve been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time. Will decide between UTSA, FAU and Bethune-Cookman. Am assuming Coach Pop and Coker's Florida background is playing a role here.

Wouldn't be a bad pick-up considering the fact that the 2nd best QB in Texas has graduated tbh.

Think hes farther down on UTSA's board for the QB position. If some of the guys that have been offered fall through, Detmer is in the next tier that would get offered imo. Manny Harris from Copperas Cove would be my bet to end up here unless Baylor offers. He'll decide in the Summer.

Update on the Copperas Cove HS duo...

QB Manny Harris, per Rivals:

"Coach Coker just really wants me to come visit again, and I've been talking to him a good amount lately. He says they have a good group of wide receivers committed so he just needs to find a quarterback to throw to them." ... "I really like the UTSA program and school. And I'll likely make my decision before my season starts. But probably in the summer time."

Harris, who also reported picking up a Texas State offer yesterday, would be a great addition to the 2015 class. He has good size for the position and is continuing to break records once held by Robert Griffin III at Copperas Cove.

DE Tyrell Thompson (on Texas Junior Day), per Scout:

“They didn’t offer me a scholarship because they are still evaluating me. But they said they were going to be back at my school in May.” ... “We went into an academics center and learned about that. Then we went into the arts center and sat down for a presentation on Texas academics. It opened my eyes and made me realize I need to stay on top of my books.” ... “It’s not all about football. That’s what some kids don’t understand but I understand that.” ... “Texas is at the top of the list.”

I have visited Houston three times, Texas-San Antonio twice and Texas and TCU twice as well.” ... Koy Detmer Jr, per Scout:

Recruiting interest is coming in for Koy Jr., who attended UTSA (http://utsa.scout.com/) Junior Day over the weekend and has been hearing from the Roadrunners, as well as a few other programs.

"The process has been pretty good. BYU has been looking at me heavy; UTSA, too.Houston (http://houston.scout.com/), North Texas (http://northtexas.scout.com/), Harvard, and Utah (http://utah.scout.com/) have been on the radar, but really UTSA and BYU are the main ones. I don't have any offers at the moment, but I'm hoping to pull some in soon," he said.

Koy Jr. will attend BYU, his uncle's alma mater, Junior Day on June 14th and says he's hoping to hear from his father's, as well.

"Colorado has been sending me letters but it would be good to see some interest from them. But other than that, it's whatever really comes in. I'm feeling good about the schools looking at me, so it's been a great experience. I'm just enjoying everything," he said.

I'm curious, why would Coker (who I admire and respect), make offers to a player that had offers from Arizona State, Baylor, Colorado State, Duke, Kansas State, Ole Miss and San Diego State? Nicholson could play in some big time conferences. Or, another player who has offers from Iowa, Miami, Tulsa and Utah who could play in the B1G or ACC. There is no way these players ever come here with those kind of offers. It's admirable to shoot high, but be realistic.

Alot of times its the smaller schools like UTSA or North Texas who get there offers in early and then bigger schools follow months later. I see no reason not to offer some kids who show interest. Some kids might prefer a smaller school to attend, location may be a factor, or even academic requirements.

What is there to lose by offering them? The worst thing that could happen is the kid says no.

And like yavozerb said, sometimes a kid does end up playing at a smaller school for whatever reason. Our DT Ashaad Mabry was an Ok State commit but his mom was having some health problems so he ended up here. What is there to lose? Well tying up a bunch of scholarship offers on players you have a very limited chance of signing vs offering to other players you have a shot at. Agreed some players want to go to a smaller program, or a school near home or have family issues like Mike Mitchell who left Ohio St to head back to Texas for his sick father in Texas.

I've got no problem in setting high goals, but just wondering why Coker was offering players he will never sign. A lot of time and effort goes into staying in contact with the recruit.

There's no limit on offers though. Offering a highly touted guy won't prevent Coker from offering any other recruit he wants, especially if that touted guy isn't really showing much interest. Every school gives out more offers than they have scholarships tbh.

Per Scout:

"D-line Coach Eric Roark told me,” ... “I was kind of expecting it. They were supposed to offer me.” ... “I want to play slot at the next level, No colleges have mentioned QB. I don't mind playing DB. UTSA likes me at WR, punt return and kick return."

For UTSA, Nicholson considers them even with the other schools.

“All schools are even right now,” said Nicholson. “Whenever I take a visit, that school kind of stands out. It's getting kind of hard right now, but when I talk to my parents then I'll make that decision.”

Nicholson is planning to visit UTSA sometime during the spring. After that, he wants to make a decision sooner rather than later.

“I'm thinking about a little after spring making a decision, but for sure before my senior season,” said Nicholson.

One thing that may bode in favor of UTSA is the fact that Nicholson is the former teammate of current Roadrunner Linebacker Tank O’Neal.

“I actually talked to Tank, when UTSA first started recruiting me,” said Nicholson. “He was telling me that he liked UTSA, it was an up coming program, and that San Antonio was a good place. He's told me nothing but good things about UTSA.”

Per Rivals, QB Bennie Coney (http://rivals.yahoo.com/pittsburgh/football/recruiting/player-Bennie-Coney-96691) a Top 15 QB in the class of '12 will transfer from Cincinnati. Will decide between UTSA, FAU and Bethune-Cookman. Am assuming Coach Pop and Coker's Florida background is playing a role here.

Wouldn't be a bad pick-up considering the fact that the 2nd best QB in Texas has graduated tbh.

Per Rivals:

"I'm still considering the same schools. I've just added some Juco schools into the mix… I am still considering UTSA but I haven't talked to them in a bit. So the question is are they still considering me?..."

I don't have a good answer as to why UTSA wouldn't have more contact with Coney unless there are restrictions I'm unaware of. But I'd assume there is still a chance Coney could end up at UTSA.

Spring schedule has been set for a while but never posted it. Thought some of you may be interested.

Spring Schedule

March 26-April 23

March 29 - Open scrimmage/practice at Dub Farris - 1 PM
April 12 - Open scrimmage/practice at Smithson Valley - TBA
April 26 - Spring Game at Alamodome - 1 PM

Practice starts Wednesday and Coker has his press conference tomorrow. Assuming it will be streamed on goutsa.com, gonna try to stop by and get some pics.

Also heard the offensive staff was in Forth Worth this past week checking out TCU's Spring Practices which are already under way. Even though hes poached several recruits from UTSA, thats pretty cool of Gary Patterson tbh. :tu

Unlikely but yeah that would suck.

Coker's attorney is going over an extension that UTSA has offered. If the attorney approves then from there it is just a formality (UT System Board of Regents approval). Cant remember if it was a 3 year extension or a 5 year one though.

It was multiple with Soza tbh.

The new starter has a bigger arm and is less mobile though. The passing game should be more wide open. Didnt think much of them visiting at first but thats a good point, it could mean we will see the Spread a lot more.

SAN ANTONIO — Former UTSA standouts Steven Kurfehs and Jeremiah Moeller (http://www.mysanantonio.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fcollege_sports%2Futsa&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Jeremiah+Moeller%22) have been invited to an upcoming NFL super regional combine in Detroit.

The two former area high school players snagged invitations to the April 12 event after participating in regional combines last month.

It's a good sign for Kurfehs and Moeller, who both want to play professionally.

According to a news release issued last October by the NFL, 29 of the regional or super regional combine participants from last spring secured 53-man roster positions.

Among those players were former Texas State standouts Daryl Morris (http://www.mysanantonio.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fcollege_sports%2Futsa&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Daryl+Morris%22) of the 49ers and Joplo Bartu of the Falcons.

Kurfehs, a linebacker, said he's excited about the invitation, and he's optimistic he can land in a pro camp this summer.

“I may not be the biggest and I might not be the fastest, but I'm not going to let anyone outwork me,” said Kurfehs, an O'Connor product. “If someone gives me a chance, I'm not going to let them down.”

Moeller, a tight end who played at New Braunfels Canyon, said athletes register for regional combines in an effort to show the scouts what they can do.

He said the super combine invitation stokes his hopes he can make it into a pro camp.

“You work your whole life for something like that, and it's big news, especially for someone like me,” said Moeller, who walked on at UTSA. “It's amazing, so far. Just got to keep working.”

UTSA pro day: Former UTSA quarterback Eric Soza (http://www.mysanantonio.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fcollege_sports%2Futsa&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Eric+Soza%22) has yet to receive a combine invitation.

But he's still in the hunt for a camp invitation and will be one of five former players working out during UTSA's pro day, scheduled to be held on campus Tuesday morning.

Players scheduled to participate include Soza, Kurfehs, Moeller, safety Cody Berry (http://www.mysanantonio.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fcollege_sports%2Futsa&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Cody+Berry%22) and defensive end Jarron Harris (http://www.mysanantonio.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fcollege_sports%2Futsa&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Jarron+Harris%22).

Spring drills to open: UTSA spring practice opens Wednesday morning. The camp will conclude with the UTSA Football Fiesta Spring Game on April 26 at the Alamodome (http://www.mysanantonio.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fcollege_sports%2Futsa&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Alamodome%22).

Track and field: Senior Keyunta Hayes (http://www.mysanantonio.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fcollege_sports%2Futsa&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Senior+Keyunta+Hayes%22), a 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials participant, won the 400- and 110-meter hurdles at the UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational last weekend at Park West.

Texas A&M, Texas, Houston, Texas Tech and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi competed in the new facility.

The Roadrunners used the meet to prepare for the Texas Relays, a four-day meet that opens Wednesday in Austin.

Baseball: Former Pleasanton star Boone Mokry will take the mound Tuesday night as the Roadrunners host A&M-Corpus Christi.
Mokry (0-0, 2.05 ERA) will be making his ninth appearance of the season and his fourth start.

Update on OL Clayton Woods from earlier today, per Rivals:

"I took an unofficial visit to UTSA this weekend and watched the team practice on Friday and Saturday. I had a great time and met a lot of the players." ... "I talked with the coaches a lot and they seem to really like me and want a center. And I have a pretty good relationship with Coach Coker, Coach Brown (OC) and Coach Roark." ... "They may not have the facilities and things other schools have but that will change in the near future. But the coaches and players have a special bond unlike any other place and that makes me think there are going to be big things happening in San Antonio for years to come."

Along with UTSA and North Texas, Woods mentioned that Rice, SMU, and Northwestern were also showing interest with Northwestern showing the most behind UTSA (though, no offer yet).

Though things are going well between Woods and UTSA, he added he would not be making a decision anytime soon. But laying solid groundwork now could pay dividends for UTSA down the road.

These are the kind of guys we need to consistently lock-up. As long as we outrecruit other C-USA schools we'll be allright. If Northwestern doesn't offer UTSA should be in good shape to land Woods imo.

Then they called me in and I spoke with Coach Coker and they offered," ... "I wasn't expecting it. It did surprise me and caught me a little off guard. His thoughts, per Rivals:

"The UTSA campus is amazing and so is the staff. The coaching staff was really friendly. And the new facilities they are going to get will be amazing... Both of my brothers went to play college ball - one at the Naval Academy in Maryland and one at Portland State in Oregon, and my parents had a hard time getting to their games. Just my opinion on Carter. From the couple of practices and limited playing time I've seen of him, he doesn't do it for me. Not sure if we have the personnel to do well with an immobile pocket passer especially against some of the better teams on the schedule. Hearing Coker call out the offense reinforces those worries but then again it could just be coach talk.

Hope I am proven wrong obviously and tbf reading stuff like this recently is encouraging (per Scout):

Tucker Carter continued to impress with his arm strength and passing abilities. Today’s weather was the first non-windy we’ve been able to watch for quite some time and Carter took advantage throwing a ton of deep balls that hit various WRs in stride. There were at least a half a dozen balls in one on one drills between WRs and DBs that Carter threw right on the money. These were passes 35 yards + into the endzone for scores. We also saw some good action in seven on seven drills.

Some thoughts on the backfield and the secondary, from Scout:

- Starting QB Tucker Carter had another sharp practice as he hit multiple receivers in stride. We’re seeing UTSA take more and more shots down the field (20 yards+), and Carter is starting to build that timing with the speed guys. On one 30 yard pass, Carter just missed WR Kenny Harrison but then came back and nailed WR Brandon Freeman with a long ball. Also to note with Carter, he had a few accurate throws today on the run. Overall the passing game was sharp.

- RBs David Glasco II and Jarveon Williams saw a bunch of action today. Both really didn’t have any spectacular moments but both were efficient and ran hard. One thing to note is that we are seeing more formations that include both Glasco and Williams in the backfield.

- With the exception of a few vertical plays by WRs Kenny Bias and Kenny Harrison, the secondary again had a good day of practice. Safety Triston Wade intercepted a ball during a two-minute drill and generally, the DBs were very tight with their coverage.

Another update on the Copperas Cove guys (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=229627&page=3&p=7185782&viewfull=1#post7185782), who are two of the better prospects UTSA is after...

QB Manny Harris (http://247sports.com/Player/Manny-Harris-44644), per Rivals:

"Lately, talks have picked up with Baylor and Texas, and also Houston. And Duke, New Mexico State, and Akron have been showing interest... Right now I'm just waiting to see what offers I get and then I'll really start seeing how interested certain schools are in me. But UTSA, Baylor, UT, and Houston are all schools that I'm interested in learning more about."

"The UTSA visit went really well. I sat in on the meetings and learned about the offense. And I watched their practice, which I really enjoyed! UTSA is a great team and a great program that just started. But I'm going to take my time with this and I'm going to enjoy the recruiting process… I went to Houston last Friday (5/11) and I'm going to Texas this Saturday (5/19). I'll also be at UTSA's spring game."

It's all a waiting game with Harris right now. He's flirting with some big programs. But if those don't pull the trigger on him, UTSA is in a great spot to land him if things shake out the way they need them to.

The 'Runners are his first offer, but schools such as BYU, Arkansas, and SMU have shown solid interest.

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/o/1378692/highlights/132828375

"I've been hearing from UTSA, Tulsa, and Texas State. And I've visited Texas State and UTSA. Most recently, I talked to Texas State and they said they liked my video and how I play… Tulsa is looking at me for safety. But right now, I don't have a favorite, I'm still taking it all in."

Depending on what other quarterbacks commit to UTSA, it would be interesting to see if UTSA would still want Key as a QB. He's a great athlete that could play a few different positions.

Update on RB Devine Ozigbio (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=229627&page=3&p=7195581&viewfull=1#post7195581), per Rivals:

"The recruiting has been picking up - especially last week when I doubled my offer total (Boise St, Colorado St, Iowa, Miami, San Diego St, Tulsa, UTAH, Wake Forest, Wisconsin, UTSA)… I just talked to the UTSA coaches on Tuesday (coach Roark, coach Gutierrez, & coach Brown). They talked about the spring game, and I plan on going to it… I don't have any favorite schools right now. I just need to make more visits before narrowing it down."

Given how many offers he has, getting Ozigbo on campus for the spring game is big. If everything goes well, UTSA could move into a "favorite" position when Ozigbo begins to narrow down his choices.

Good to see Carter picking it up cause the QB position for UTSA was the biggest question mark for the coming season in my opinion. Keep all the insider info coming fkla, much appreciated..

It's definitely nice to see nothing but good things being said about him. Really looking forward to see how he does in the Spring Game.

Third non-Saturday national TV game confirmed. Season opener @Houston officially moved to Friday Aug 29.Well, we have to take what national exposure we can get. Sucks for the out of town season ticket holders though.

WR Furquan Shorts (http://247sports.com/Player/Furquan-Shorts-45481)
6-2, 190 lbs (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3351348/furquan-shorts)
Atascocita High School
Humble, Texas

Might want to keep an eye on Shorts, quotes per Rivals:

"I've been talking to BYU, UTAH, La Tech, Texas A&M and LSU coaches. UTAH said they should have an offer for me in the spring. And BYU just came by and said they would likely offer when they come back to watch soon… But that won't change anything with UTSA."

As of right now, Shorts is still sticking with UTSA. But like many recruits, he continues to get excited with new interest from other schools.

If A&M or LSU come into the picture it's game over for UTSA.

New Boston HS (New Boston, Tx) ATH Jeff Gladney (http://247sports.com/Player/Jeff-Gladney-32879) has been offered. Supposedly being looked at as a defensive back (most likely corner) by the staff. Also holds an offer from Northern Illinois. Quotes per Rivals:

"One of my coaches told me about the offer and then I came into contact with some UTSA coaches and was told by them as well...I can't make it to UTSA's spring game because I have prom... Right now, I'm still gaining more information about UTSA but my options are open... I do not have any favorites at the moment and I'll make a commitment decision whenever the time is right."

Some bits from Scout's practice report:

- UTSA (http://utsa.scout.com/) held a non-contact practice on Wednesday. For about an hour, players ran through various situations and scenarios in a scrimmage-like setting. It was a non-contact practice with players not in full pads but in shells.

- QB Tucker Carter again showed his consistency running the first team offense at a brisk pace. Many of the routes were intermediate today but he connected several times with both WRs Kenny Harrison and Marcellus Mack. Harrison and Mack have emerged as Carter’s favorite targets.

.- The three-headed monster at RB continued today with a heavy dose of David Glasco and Jarveon Williams, with some Brandon Armstrong being sprinkled in. In the first dozen or so plays in a quasi-scrimmage, which Offensive Coordinator Kevin Brown later said was scripted, each of the three RBs touched the ball with Glasco and Williams seeing multiple looks.

- WR Kam Jones (concussion) fully returned to practice and was included during various parts of practice.

- Saturday will be UTSA’s fourth spring game. It is at 1 pm at the Alamodome- The spring game will be offense vs defense and will be four 12-minute quarters with normal clock rules. There will be 10-minute halftime.

- The scoring for the spring game will be as follows:
Offense — touchdown=6; field goal=3; two-point conversion=2; extra point=1; first down=1
Defense — touchdown=6; takeaway/safety=5 (trumps a stop); stop (drive with no points)=3; two-point conversion=2; extra point=1

In the past decade, the FBS ranks have swelled thanks to the addition of eight new full members, with four more either joining this year or next to beef the total tally to 129. Most of these programs, though, have struggled to establish themselves as anything more than a low-end product that can only hope to reach the six wins necessary to get a bowl game.

And then there's UTSA. With its built-in fanbase, fertile recruiting backyard and championship-level coach, the Roadrunners are primed to be the next big thing in college football.

UTSA didn't even have a program until 2011, but since joining FBS in 2012, it's been consistent improvement, as the school went from 8-4 in the Western Athletic to 7-5 in Conference USA. Larry Coker, who won a national title with Miami (Fla.), has implemented a winning mentality into this new program and should soon be packing the Alamodome with south Texas fans interested in seeing another big winner.

And with that success should come future advancement. Kyle Kensing of The College Football Huddle (http://cfbhuddle.com/2014/05/25/reports-fastest-growing-cities-in-america-say-conference-realignment/) thinks UTSA and its growing region could be a prime candidate for the next wave of conference realignment, where the winning should continue.

Only Bleacher Report but still surprising to be mentioned in this kind of list. Speaks volumes about the potential the program has. I think we win a couple of conference titles then go on to the AAC with Houston and SMU before the decade is done tbh.

That's some solid recognition. I think as long as the staff everywhere within the administration and athletic department is kept intact, then a future AAC invitation is very likely.

AAC is would make sense, but UTSA needs to improve its facilities.

Replacing the Convo and improving the basketball team is the biggest hurdle since the AAC is a good bball conference.

The Alamodome is a good enough venue to call home for the next 2-3 decades and the Park West Athletic Complex will take care of olympic sports+football facilities.

Yeah, I agree. They've already improved many of them. The weight room is still pretty "make-shift" though, I think.

Yeah, its pretty small and obvious that it wasn't meant to be a weight room. I'm pretty sure a weight room is part of the plan for Park West. The equipment was recently upgraded though so atleast that is on par with other mid-majors:

Came in at #60 for on Paul Myberg's USA Today countdown:

You have to learn how to crawl before you can walk, unless you're UTSA – in which case you skip crawling, walking, potty training, remedial spelling and cursive, opting instead for hitting the ground running at a pace beyond even the Roadrunners' wildest expectations.
...

A monster has been born on the Riverwalk: UTSA is so good, so fast that it nearly defies logical explanation.

As if San Antonio needed another monster. But unlike those other guys – you know, Duncan and the gang – UTSA is all local, totally inexperienced, flying by the seat of its pants, taking it a game at a time and seemingly unaware of just how ridiculous this whole thing has become. One similarity: UTSA is brimming with confidence. Another: UTSA is really good.

They did a great job. They were very proud of what they had to offer,” said Martel. ... “I like the coaches a lot, the campus is really nice,” said Martel. "The players sounded like they what they’ve done there and are looking to improve some more. But right now I don't have a timetable for making a decision."

HOUSTON — Scott Inskeep and Robert Singletary were named to the Rotary Lombardi Award preseason watch list, the Lombardi Award committee announced on Monday.
The award is presented annually to the nation's top interior lineman. That includes down linemen end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers that set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.

Inskeep, a senior offensive guard, is coming off a 2013 campaign that saw him record 61 knockdown blocks, including a season-best nine at Tulsa (Nov. 9) and again a week later against Tulane, and that was good for second on the squad. The 6-foot-4, 300-pounder from McAllen also graded out at 82 percent and was a key part of an offensive line that did not commit a holding penalty en route to second-team All-Conference USA accolades. His blocking helped the UTSA offense average 25.6 points, 417.8 total yards (175.4 rush/242.4 pass), 21.9 first downs and 32:24 possession time per contest. It marks the second consecutive season that Inskeep was named to the Lombardi Award's preseason watch list.

Meanwhile, Singletary, a 6-foot-2, 250-pound senior defensive end from Kingwood, was named a 2013 honorable mention all-league performer after racking up 30 tackles, a team-leading five sacks and two forced fumbles, four QB hurries and a pair of pass breakups and in just eight games (six starts) in his first campaign as a Roadrunner. His top outing came in his second contest of the season at Marshall when he recorded career highs with seven stops and two sacks in addition to forcing a fumble that led to points.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Triston Wade was one of 39 players that were named to the Jim Thorpe Award's preseason watch list on Friday. The award is presented annually to the nation's top defensive back.

Wade is coming off another all-conference season for the Roadrunners. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound free safety followed up his 2012 first-team All-Western Athletic Conference campaign with a team-leading 94 tackles and two interceptions to go along with seven pass breakups and two-and-a-half tackles behind the line of scrimmage in 12 starts and he was rewarded with second-team All-Conference USA recognition. The senior from Tyler intercepted both his passes at Tulsa (Nov. 2), one of which he returned 82 yards for a touchdown, and he also broke up a toss in the end zone to go along with four stops in that contest. Wade recorded a career-high 12 stops at Arizona (Sept. 14) and matched that feat two weeks later against Houston (Sept. 28).

He enters his final season as the program’s all-time leader in interceptions (8), pass breakups (21), forced fumbles (7) and fumble recoveries (4) and stands second in tackles (207). Wade has had a hand in a total of 15 turnovers (eight INTs/seven fumbles) in the first 34 games of his career.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The NCAA Division I Board of Directors approved the recommendation from the NCAA Division I Administration Cabinet to elect UTSA to Football Bowl Subdivision active membership on Thursday.

The Roadrunners, who began play as a Football Championship Subdivision independent in 2011, spent the last two seasons reclassifying to the FBS, first as a member of the Western Athletic Conference in 2012 and this past year in Conference USA.

UTSA will play its first season as a full-fledged member of the FBS and be eligible for a bowl game this fall.

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA and Larry Coker have agreed to terms on a five-year arrangement that will keep the 66-year-old football coach under contract through the 2018 season. The deal, in the works for several months, has been approved by the University of Texas System’s vice chancellor for academic affairs and is recommended for approval by the board of regents. Regents will take up the matter in a regularly-scheduled meeting next week. Details on the contract surfaced Friday when the UT System posted the meeting agenda on its website.

Hired by UTSA in 2009 to start the football program from scratch, Coker has been working on a contract that paid him $350,000 annually. It was scheduled to expire after the 2015 season.

The new arrangement calls for the coach to be paid $400,000 this year, increasing in increments annually and reaching $500,000 in the final year. Included are increases in incentive pay for team and academic performance.

The contract period is for Sept. 1, 2014 through Aug. 31, 2019.

Love that we were able to flip Jones. Two head to head wins over UH for kids that are right in their back yard.

It's amazing how far the program has come that they can win recruiting battles against the likes of Houston, a former SWC school.

Trevor Speights will be at the Dome today. Soft Arizona commit but will be a UTSA visitor--I think he decommits eventually. Not for UTSA but for a bigger Texas program.

Still early in the Spring but Coker doesn't seem to be too happy with the offense so far. Trying to be positive about Carter but I've always had a feeling that he is not that good. Wish we had Saint Soza for one more year tbh. :cry

Carter is bad tbh.

Just get rid of those tie-dye under shirts and they'll look good.

UTSA up 24-20 at the half. Carter is sucking it up per usual. Under 50% completion pct and two INTs including a pick six.

Yeah, Im not to impressed with Tucker Carter. He is so one dimensional. Not very mobile at all. Im used to Sosa being able to run if he gets pressure.

Yeah, I'm ready to hand over the reins to the freshman.

Carter was only part of the problem. More noticable to me is that UTSA lost even though they scored 37 pts..The strength of this team is there D, major letdown on that side of the ball..

The defense definitely played bad the second half, those last two drives in the 4th were killers. You gotta give them the benefit of the doubt that they'll bounce back though since they were solid all season prior to yesterday...Carter OTOH has been shaky all season. The D also spotted the offense 10 points with the two early TOs.

We're probably 3-1 if we had another year of Soza.
