Some will do that, I think Tim goes on his own terms and leaves while still playing at a pretty high level. When he feels he can't go anymore or is not effective he retires IMO.

Tim's never going to announce his retirement beforehand. He never made an announcement at Wake that he was coming back to school, yet he did it three times. The deadline passed and he never declared for the draft. This time, the deadline will pass, and he'll walk away. I think he's horrified at the thought of some cheesy farewell tour.

With the way his playing, he has the right to say that....

He's still one of the best bigs in the league if not THE best. Why retire??? If you can still play at a high level I don't see a reason to stop.

People probably think that if they say it enough then it's true. I hope he plays until he's 50 if for no other reason than just to piss people off.

9 dub-dubs in the past 13 games playing old man minutes. That's insane. When the fuck are you ever gonna see a guy Tim's age play so well again?

There's no reason to think that though. Why would he just quit if he's being offered big money to hang around? What else does he have to do? These guys never retire when we think they should (except David), but they retire when they can't do it anymore.

I don't think it hurts someone's legacy to hang around and dwindle away. It would only do that in the minds of people who cannot remember back 10 years (it's been at least 10 years since his prime).

The only reason I could see would be the amount of rehab required to remain in game shape, and the risk of long term injury.

That is at the end of next year when his contract is up! I think he hangs it up then and he will still be at a pretty good level compared to some later in their careers at that time IMO. I don't think he loses much.
I wouldn't be surprised if this season was the last.

I personally would not either.

Getting that vibe big time so let's hope the post season goes our way as fans. Prob gonna be the big finale. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if Manu was the one that dipps after this season and Tim is solid as a horse and plays all next year as well.

But it kinda sucks and is lose-lose for fans this year: you know if spurs win it all, certain names (TD, Manu) are likely going to leave on the high note, and the only way we will prob see them next year is if this season ends so disappointingly they have to return to try once more.

What, to you, suggests that Tim will retire after the season? I don't see any indication that he will.

The guy is averaging 15-10 with 2 blocks a game. His shooting% might look low at 49% but we also have to remember that he had an absolutely horrible beginning to the season as far as shooting goes, so the fact that he's gotten it up to 49% shows how well he's been playing. If you can score, rebound, and protect the rim at the levels that Duncan has shown this year, I don't think its time to hang 'em up. I think as long as the Spurs are competing, he'll hang around. All the guy cares about is winning, and if the opportunity is there, he'll go for it.

Although just to play devil's advocate, its also a possibility that after the divorce/separation he might want to step away to focus on the kids

shitty take, i know. but it just feels like he's not into it this year but that's prob just the end of the finals and wanting to ff to the playoffs to try again.

physically he looks great, been putting up dbl dbls and is not too far off the crisp form of last season. but watch his body language, he's sick of the reg season length.

Tell me why Tim wouldn't want to call it a career and have a fresh start doing something new. He has done it all. His body language just doesn't seem enthusiastic or positive, and yeah he's the quiet type who doesn't show emotion and it's mid-season, but still. Maybe I'm wrong, I hope so.

His body language just doesn't seem enthusiastic or positive,

His body language seems about the same as it has been since '97, and his numbers are as good as ever over the last 2 months. Unless he suffers a major injury or wins the title this season, I'd say he won't retire for another year.

That wouldn't surprise me either. But numbers don't mean shit to Tim. He's not going to wait til he's averaging 10 and 6 to retire man. I agree there is nothing overtly suggestive that Tim is going to call it a career after this season. Tim is the stoic type we all know that. I think this off season and current season have been tough for him emotionally. Just enjoy what you see and don't take for granted that he's coming back for another season, that's all.

His drive to win another ring at this late stage has truly been amazing. Barkley didn't have the drive at 35 and he didn't win shit.. Duncan is closing in on 40..

He knows his legacy is already there, he's a top 10 player of all time, and has the chance to be revered even more.

While I could see him retiring in a few years, I could just as easily see him playing another 5 years. The way big men play differs from the speed of swingmen, he could be effective in the post and on defense (screen setting, a tall man is always a threat in the post, etc.) for many years to come.

And he's averaging a double-double for the season playing old man minutes.

"But what if this had happened a year ago, when Duncan was a mere 39 years old? Would LaMarcus Aldridge have had any interest in the Spurs?"

aka LMA and West bought a fugazi.

Bullshit, Duncan had been playing smart, efficient and measured basketball before the right knee injury in January. He was passing the ball better than ever while rebounding and defending the paint at high level in limited minutes.

Unfortunately, his injury has hampered him considerably especially with what little mobility he has left and to add to that the team never acquired a adequate backup (when have I seen that before?) to protect Duncan.

Good article. Bittersweet that we only get to see the greatest Spur ever for ten more games. At least he will go out with #6.

It's so sad to see him try and try and the legs just won't move the way they used to. Scoop shots from 3ft away? Not his shot. Falling to the floor multiple times during a single game? For God's sake, Pop, keep him off the floor and save him the indignity of being outplayed by Adams/Cantor. I'd rather see him go out on the bench, a wounded warrior, than as a ghost of championships past.

He's been so close to retiring with another title, still playing great.

It's a shame his second knee gave up. I can only hope there's something left in him.

Tim will give us one more season. He loves the game too much and he can still play but this series is just tough for him. OKC is so athletic and it's giving him issues.

wildbill2u

right now he is a liability on the court. Unfortunately we don't have any big men left (except Boban and Bonner) who are big enough to match up with Adams and Cantor. Both of those guys are outplaying Diaw or West. Wasn't OKC the best rebounding team in the league? Once Adams becomes a good scorer for them as a thrid option, we have a lot of trouble in the front court.
