View Full Version : Duncan opt out next season to win?
FutureMan

Basically. I'm just curious if it is possible for Duncan to opt out of his contract for next year and sign at the minimum so the front office can give the max (or close to the max) to another player. Lets say Monroe. He has taken a pay cut before for a ring and with a lineup of:
Parker
Green
Leonard
Monroe
Splitter
with the bench being:
Mills/Joseph
Manu
Belinlli
Diaw
Duncan
The Spurs would be unstoppable. Maybe not plausible but is it possible.

Good question.
I think ironically its not the owners but rather the Players Association does not allow it.
Nope... He would be the laughingstock of the league if he did that... You have to have some pride...

Timmy has given up way too much money in his career already.

How could you say someone isn't full of pride if they took a pay cut to win championships. That's literally team pride. And he literally did that before. How is that a laughing stock? Players saying they want to win and really they are full of it(Kobe).

Huh? He's been generous compared to most stars maybe but he's one of the highest paid players ever in the league.

Highly doubtful. His legacy is already cemented as a top 10 great with his 4 titles and nearly 5th to go along with all of his MVPs, all star selections and All NBA team placements.

Just staying at Wake his senior year cost him a fortune.

Replace Duncan with Manu and we can talk

It was just a thought. But I guess I'll say it again. Possible but not plausible. And since its not possible then the thought is gone. Sorry I thought he would take another pay cut to win a ring again.

Sounds fair, could follow in Timmy's footsteps of taking a pay cut.

Just win the championship and he would retire and you can have all his salary.

Yeah that is true, but no HOF player is going to take the vet minimum no matter how much they want to win! Tim has already taken paycuts most would not take, he is not going to opt out to get this or that amount a year when it is guaranteed! I can't name one superstar ever to take the mininum and especially on their last contract. The player to do that doesn't exist (D ROB didn't even take the minimum on his last and some bitched about him not taking far less).
Stupid post! He won't take a pay cut and nor should he take a pay cut. No way the Spurs pay him less. He'll get another 3 years at around the same level of $10 mil per year.

Monroe?? You want to make Duncan opt out of his contract and resign for peanuts so you can throw a max contract at Monroe?
This is lunacy, OP.

Uhhh, if you were Tim Duncan and opted out so the Spurs could give you the minimum to max out a player who you're better than, how many of you would do that? I'd be pissed off, especially if that new guy doesn't perform. It'd be too much of a gamble, unless you're getting someone like Lebron.
If Tim opts out, the Spurs should play him more, not less. Geez wiz, that's crazy to ask him to take less.
TheGoldStandard

The only way Tim would take less would be if Pop came to him and said, "Last year when we lost when I whispered into Lebron's ear I told him we were gunning for him in 2014 and you were willing to take a paycut."

What's all this about Tim taking huge paycuts his whole career? Hasn't he been paid the max almost his entire career? He took a small paycut in 2010 and a big one in 2012.
Tony and Manu on the other hand have given up a lot of money to stay on the Spurs. Parker at $12.5m/yr is a bargain, and the same goes for Timmy at $10m this year.
To ask Timmy to take less would be ridiculous, and we wouldn't be able to get a real quality player anyway.

Tim's earned over 200M in his career and he's lived in SA so it's not like he's been dropping Millions living it up here.

duncan's too nice. he should have at least a little bit of kobe in him. after game 6 was the perfect time to throw his coach and a certain teammate i will not name, under a bus, but he never did and didn't do it in the off season. sometimes u just got to say something.

I don't agree about throwing them under the bus, but it truly was the one single time Tim Duncan's personality was a negative. He absolutely should have DEMANDED he be in the game at the end of 6.

Had he come out earlier he would have commanded a deal like Kevin Garnett got (which killed the Timberwolves & helped cause the lockout which led to Tim's ring anyways...). 6 years 126 million.
His option at the time
He could sign a seven-year deal worth $86.5 million with San Antonio, although he is considered more likely to sign a shorter deal.
He ended up signing these contracts instead
Jul 16 2003
Signed a 7 year $105 million contract with San Antonio (SA)
Aug 1 2000
Signed a 3 year $31.9 million contract with San Antonio (SAS)

so the real question is, does Tim Duncan want to spend X amount of millions at a shot at another title when the ownership over the history of this team hasn't shown the same willingness to spend that money?

...He wouldn't actually have a better chance to win with any other team, though. :lol Remember, the Spurs are still in fact title contenders.
