Paul Ryan’s CPAC Speech Was Based on a Lie (http://www.thenation.com/blog/178735/paul-ryans-cpac-speech-based-lie)

Paul Ryan’s CPAC speech yesterday was almost comically offensive even before it became clear that it was based on a lie.

By now, you’ve probably heard about the speech itself (https://www.prosperitypac.com/speeches/cpac/), in which Ryan denounced the left for offering people “a full stomach—and an empty soul.” Discussing the moral squalor of free school lunch programs, Ryan retold a story he heard from Eloise Anderson, a former single mother on assistance who became a hero to the right (http://books.google.com/books?id=JW238sGqrk8C&pg=PA129&lpg=PA129&dq=george+will+eloise+anderson+off+the+plantation&source=bl&ots=xktHnZsIJf&sig=bbDLts4VESXzsoIcQzJdWE5jEsg&hl=en&sa=X&ei=S8QZU-riDcqEkQfvg4GwDw&ved=0CCcQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false) by calling for the abolishment of welfare (she’s now a member of Scott Walker’s cabinet). It was about a boy Anderson had ostensibly met who didn’t want a free government lunch. “He wanted his own lunch—one in a brown-paper bag just like the other kids’,” said Ryan. “He wanted one, he said, because he knew a kid with a brown-paper bag had someone who cared for him.”

Ryan’s words would have been nasty even if the underlying story were true. Do parents whose kids get subsidized school lunches not care for them? Does Ryan really think their souls are empty? Last night, however, The Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler reported (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/wp/2014/03/06/a-story-too-good-to-check-paul-ryan-and-the-story-of-the-brown-paper-bag/) that the anecdote Ryan used was actually ripped out of context from the bestselling book (http://www.aninvisiblethread.com/) An Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-Year-Old Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting with Destiny. The book is about the friendship between author Laura Schroff and Maurice Mazyck, whom Schroff met when he was begging on the street. At one point, she made him school lunches every day and left them with her doorman to pick up on the way to school. In a heartbreaking passage, Mazyck asked her to put them in a brown paper bag like the ones all the other kids had.

The Ukranian candidate: Putin wins CPAC poll (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/03/06/1282459/-The-Ukranian-Candidate-Putin-Wins-CPAC-Poll)

In a stunning upset, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin won the CPAC straw poll by a wide margin, beating Chris Christie, Jeb Bush, Rick Santorum and all other prospective candidates by 50 points.

In a related development, a group of CPAC researchers, including Orly Taitz, Jerome Corsi and Tucker Carlson (the "Reverse Birthers") published the following birth certificate:

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin
Born: October 6, 1952, 2:00 am
Hospital: Coney Island Hospital, Brooklyn, NY
Length: 17"; Weight: 7.5 lbs.
Distinguishing characteristics: Will not wear a shirt.
Parents: Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin and Maria Ivanovna Putina
Address: 122 Oceana Drive West, Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, New York.(1)

Prior to the vote, a parade of speakers praised Putin:

Rudy Giuliani said of Putin: “he’s what you call a leader”House Republican Mike Rogers rhapsodized: "Putin is running circles around the United States. He is playing chess while we're playing marbles."

Bryan Fisher of the American Family Association called the Russian leader a "Lion of Christianity" in large part because of his anti-gay policies.

In her closing speech, Sarah Palin repeated her boffo line, "people are looking at Putin as one who wrestles bears and drills for oil. They look at our president as one who wears mom jeans and equivocates and bloviates." (2)

By the time of the vote, the result was a foregone conclusion.

Chris Christie Admits GOP is Fighting for the Koch Brothers at CPAC

In a rare moment of honesty, Chris Christie spoke the truth about what the Republican Party stands for at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) today. Christie told the audience Republicans need to have a positive message as he proclaimed (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/chris-christie-harry-reid-koch-great-americans):

We have to start talking about what we’re for and not continuing to rail against what we’re against is because of one simple reason, our ideas are better than their ideas.

And according to Chris Christie, what are Republicans for? They are for the Koch brothers. Christie blasted Democrats and defended the Koch brothers by stating (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/chris-christie-harry-reid-koch-great-americans):

What they’re for in Washington, D.C. is to have the leader of the Senate Democrats stand up and rail against two American entrepreneurs (the Koch brothers) who have built a business, created jobs and created wealth…Harry Reid should get back to work and stop picking on great Americans.

Chris Christie has a message for Democrats. Stop picking on the Koch Brothers. Yes, the heroic Governor of New Jersey has come to the rescue of the most vulnerable Americans, Charles and David Koch.

Yet, for some time, the message didn't just fall on deaf ears—there were few sets of ears in the room. Suddenly, that changed. In fact, as I tweeted the above photo, I had a response from someone who snapped a picture of a much fuller room. That picture was accurate and so was mine. That picture showed a nearly full ballroom, while my picture showed an empty one. So what was the difference?

The difference was that the diversity panel ran over its time. People began filling in—in droves. Why the change of heart? The diversity panel ran late and into the time slot for NRA executive Wayne LaPierre to address CPAC in the same room. LaPierre went on to give a rousing speech that generated some of the loudest enthusiasm of the day from the crowd. Yet, therein lies the problem. Speaking to gun rights supporters is not the path to Republican success at the national level. Most ardent supporters of the 2nd Amendment find Democrats to be a threat and reliably vote Republican. Wayne LaPierre doesn’t change minds. He doesn’t necessarily grow the party, as people have very polarized views about him and the topic for which he very successfully and eloquently advocates.

Why CPAC Isn’t As Grassroots As You Think

This week hundreds of college Republicans and :lol men sporting Founding Father costumes :lol are in National Harbor, Md., across the Potomac from Washington, D.C., for the Conservative Political Action Conference, the annual meeting of the American Conservative Union. Anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist calls it “Woodstock for conservatives.”

But while the American Conservative Union, CPAC’s parent, refers to itself as the “nation’s oldest and largest grassroots conservative organization,” an examination of the group’s finances shows the organization receives support from some of America’s biggest and least popular industries: guns, big oil, and cigarettes.

Rarely seen and previously unreported tax filings for the ACU and ACU Foundation, the group responsible for staging CPAC, reveal that in the 2010 tax year, the National Rifle Association provided $225,000 of the ACU Foundation’s overall revenue. In 2010 the ACU Foundation reported $288,670 in grant revenue and $1,063,103 in “program service revenue.” The NRA’s executive vice president and CEO, Wayne LaPierre, has been a regular featured speaker at past CPAC events and he again spoke (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/mar/6/cpac-2014-nra-lapierre-gun-owners-wont-back-down) at the gathering on Thursday. The 2013 CPAC included an event titled “NRA University” at which CPAC attendees could “learn more about NRA, Second Amendment, gun control debate.” It even offered participants “a FREE one-year NRA membership,” according to the conference schedule. The NRA is a “presenting sponsor” at the 2014 conference—a sponsorship level requiring a $110,000 contribution.

In 2010 the billionaire Koch brothers’ companies contributed a total of $50,000 to the ACU and the ACU Foundation. In the same year, cigarette giant Altria contributed $25,000 to the ACU, and the conservative Anschutz Foundation contributed $25,000 to the ACU Foundation.

Koch Industries, a major player in U.S. oil and gas industry, sponsored the “VIP Ronald Reagan Dinner Reception” at CPAC’s 2013 meeting.

Perhaps more importantly, the ACU promotes the tobacco industry when new regulatory measures are proposed. The ACU publicly defended the interests of the tobacco industry when the FDA proposed imposing restrictions on menthol cigarettes. Responding to a July 2013 invitation for public input from the FDA, the ACU wrote to express (http://conservative.org/news/re-docket-no-fda-2013-n-0521-menthol-cigarettes-tobacco-products-request-comments) its “strong opposition to the establishment of the Food and Drug Administration of a tobacco product standard for menthol in cigarettes.” The ACU also used its influence to promote legislation benefiting the oil and gas industries. In addition to contributions from the Anschutz Foundation, funded by oil tycoon Philip Anschutz and the Koch brothers, Chevron contributed $20,000 to the ACU Foundation in 2010. The oil and drilling industry found no shortage of support from the ACU. In December 2011 the ACU wrote to (http://rsc.scalise.house.gov/uploadedfiles/rsc_job_bill_letter.pdf) Rep. Jim Jordan, then-chairman of the Republican Study Committee, urging Jordan and all members of the House to support the “Jobs Through Growth Act,” which would “reverse the absurd finding of EPA that carbon dioxide is a ‘pollutant.’ ” “The bill would also expedite the construction and operation of the Keystone XL Pipeline,” said the ACU letter. The bill gained 59 co-sponsors but died in committee.

Koch Industries, a major player in the U.S. oil and gas industry, sponsored the “VIP Ronald Reagan Dinner Reception” at CPAC’s 2013 meeting. (Former Koch Industries Executive Director of Federal Affairs Matt Schlapp appears as a board member on ACU tax filings starting in 2009.) CPAC’s 2014 annual conference website lists Koch and the NRA as sponsors but doesn’t disclose the precise amount of either’s support.

When contacted for comment about its corporate donors and the appearance of advocacy for the oil, cigarette, and gun industries, ACU National Communications Director Laura Keehner Rigas said, “ACU does not discuss the details of contributions beyond what is publicly available through our Form 990 and our website. Please reference our website for a sampling of CPAC sponsors, co-sponsors, and exhibitors.”

Jindal Compares Obama Administration To Segregationist

DOJ Trolls Jindal With Civil Rights Book Gift After Segregation Remark

The Justice Department is responding to Bobby Jindal's comparison (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/jindal-obama-segregationist-wallace) of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to a segregationist by sending him a book about the civil rights movement.

The book, written by Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), a civil rights icon, is called "Walking With the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement." The DOJ bookmarked a page in which Lewis writes about Vivian Malone Jones, the first black graduate of the University of Alabama, who was blocked at the door by segregationist Gov. George Wallace when seeking to enroll.
Jones, it turns out, is Holder's sister-in-law (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/bobby-jindal-eric-holder-sister-in-law-segregationist).

"This should help the Governor brush up on his history for the next time he invokes the civil rights movement.” Justice spokesman Kevin Lewis told TPM.

CPAC BONUS SATURDAY -- THE PRINCESS IN EXCELSIS

http://www.esquire.com/cm/esquire/images/WJ/esq-palin-cpac-0314-xlg.jpg

By now, and by god, it should have settled permanently in the consciousness of the nation what a huge and untoward gamble with the country John McCain and his campaign took in 2008 when they elevated Sarah Palin from her rightful place on the tundra to the political celebrity she currently enjoys. McCain should pay a heavy price for unleashing this ignorant, two-wheeled bilewagon on the country's politics. :lol If you think she's a legitimate political leader, you're an idiot and a sucker and I feel sorry for you.

Yesterday she gave a wildly received speech to ring down the curtain at CPAC. The applause, as far as I know, may still be going on. It was as singularly embarrassing a public address as any allegedly sentient primate ever has delivered. It was a disgrace to politics, to rhetoric, to the English language, and to seventh-grade slam books everywhere.

This ambulatiory bag of rank resentment pulled out all the tricks. The cheap shots; "Aw, John, why the long face?" to the Secretary of State.

The sneering, wheedling playground taunting -- "You can't make a phone call without Michelle Obama knowing, 'This is the third time this week you dialed Pizza Hut Delivery'" -- and a full panoply of funny voices that are the trademark of dipshit comics in every two-drink minimum club in America. We got "hope and channng-ey," and how "some members" of the GOP establishment are saying to us, "Hush, America. Go to sleep, little lambs." And, in what is being celebrated as thepiece de resistance , she turned Green Eggs And Ham into an extended taunt.

"I do not like this spyin' man, I do not like ‘Oh, yes we can,' I do not like this kind of hope, and we won't take it nope, nope, nope."

(Dr. Seuss, a noted progressive, was having dry heaves in the Void.)

If you laughed, you're an idiot and I feel sorry for you.

"There is no free birth control. There is no free phone. There is no free health care. There are no free Fritos. There is no free lunch."

Says a woman who's been on the grift full time for five years now, and who did, in fact, manage to work in a plug for her next inevitably cancelled television show, citing "the places where most of the people who do the working and tax-paying live...and that's where you'll find... AMAZING AMERICA!" The folks at the Very Big Fish Channel or whatever it is must be thrilled.

We even got the inevitable gloat. Back five years ago, somebody wrote down on a little card for her that allowing the Russians to invade Georgia -- as though there was anything we could have done about that -- would embolden Vladimir Putin to move on Ukraine. She dutifully read it in public and now, of course, she is the smartest geopolitical mind in the country.

"After all, who could have seen this one coming?"

In 2008, we should remember, she wasn't sure how many Koreas there were (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0110/31335.html), thought Saddam Hussein was behind the 9/11 attacks, and was unclear whether or not Africa was a country. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/05/palin-didnt-know-africa-i_n_141653.html)

So, in an act of Christian charity, I will grant that some anonymous staffer, who very likely has only now recovered from the serious heroin habit he developed while working with Palin on foreign policy in 2008, was slightly clairvoyant about the intentions of the Putin government. Well done, unsung hero. If you respect her knowledge of anything beyond where her next speaking fee is coming from, you're an idiot and I feel sorry for you.

A friend bailed on the speech, making the very plausible case that Palin is simply another political celebrity freakshow, like Donald Trump. I can see the point there but, with Palin, and watching the hysterical reception her puerile screed received, there is something more serious going on.

She is the living representation of the infantilization of American politics, a poisonous Grimm Sister telling toxic fairy tales to audiences drunk on fear, and hate and nonsense. She respects no standards but her own. She is in perpetual tantrum, railing against her betters, which is practically everyone, and volunteering for the job of avatar to the country's reckless vandal of a political Id. It was the address of a malignant child delivered to an audience of malignant children. If you applauded, you're an idiot and I feel sorry for you.

Ann Coulter At CPAC: Democrats Want Immigration Reform For 'Warm Bodies, More Votes'

"You want the Democrats who want more immigrants, particularly illegal immigrants, because they need brand new voters, just warm bodies, more votes," she said. "Amnesty goes through, and the Democrats have 30 million new voters. I just don't think Republicans have an obligation to forgive law-breaking just because the Democrats need another 30 million voters."

She's got a point, and if you fail to see it you're blinder than I thought.

I didn't say she didn't have a point. It's a very good point. The Repugs know.

Combined with Repug businessmen benefitting from exploiting undoc immigrants for decades, it's easy to see why the Repugs didn't, couldn't pass any immigration legislation 2001-2006.

Repugs are pro-business/anti-citizen because business pays them to be. That's THEIR point.

Extreme As It Ever Was: Five Things To Know About This Year's CPAC

5) So Much For Diversity

Despite everything we hear about how the GOP is really making an effort this time to attract non-white voters, very few CPAC members bothered to show up (http://www.brookings.edu/blogs/fixgov/posts/2014/03/06-cpac-2014-minority-outreach-panel-hudak) for the summit’s panel on minority-outreach.

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/sites/default/files/cpac2014panel.jpg
Ironically, the panelists repeatedly said that the first step to solving the GOP’s demographic problem would be for Republican candidates to show up in communities of color. But it seems conservative activists don’t even seem all that interested in attending a panel at the National Harbor hotel.

4) Shaming Poor People

Rep. Paul Ryan showed off the latest version of “compassionate conservatism” when he attacked liberals for providing people “a full stomach and an empty soul.” He also suggested that parents who take advantage of programs offering free meals to hungry schoolchildren don’t really care about their kids.

“Once I heard someone say what was important to him as a boy was that he didn’t want school lunch, he wanted a brown bag because the brown bag that he brought with his lunch in it meant that his mom cared about him,” Ryan recalled.

It turns out Ryan’s entire story was lifted from a book (http://wonkette.com/543369/somebody-is-stealing-children-to-put-in-paul-ryan-speeches) whose author actually backs the very programs (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/wp/2014/03/06/a-story-too-good-to-check-paul-ryan-and-the-story-of-the-brown-paper-bag/) Ryan was criticizing and who also opposed the congressman’s budget proposals.

3) Corporate Takeover

It is no surprise that the American Conservative Union advances a pro-corporate agenda, or that the group is being rewarded handsomely for it. Slate’s Eli Clifton reports (http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2014/03/cpac_supported_by_gun_oil_and_cigarette_industries _american_conservative.html) that the ACU takes huge donations “from some of America’s biggest and least popular industries: guns, big oil, and cigarettes.”

Perhaps more importantly, the ACU promotes the tobacco industry when new regulatory measures are proposed.

The ACU publicly defended the interests of the tobacco industry when the FDA proposed imposing restrictions on menthol cigarettes. Responding to a July 2013 invitation for public input from the FDA, the ACU wrote to express (http://conservative.org/news/re-docket-no-fda-2013-n-0521-menthol-cigarettes-tobacco-products-request-comments) its “strong opposition to the establishment of the Food and Drug Administration of a tobacco product standard for menthol in cigarettes.”

The ACU also used its influence to promote legislation benefiting the oil and gas industries.

Along with the many inevitable jokes about how climate change can’t exist because it is cold in the winter, CPAC also hosted industry-backed panels that labeled climate change science “modern witchcraft (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/industry-funded-cpac-panelists-climate-change-silly-scam-modern-witchcraft)” and “human racism (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/cpac-panelist-human-racism-drives-climate-change-concern).”

2) Respectable Conservatism?

Is CPAC becoming more mainstream and less crazy (http://www.newsweek.com/conservative-powwow-goes-soft-231319)?

While many of the Right Wing’s most fringe and conspiratorial activists appeared at the CPAC alternative “The Uninvited” — which viewed CPAC as too liberal and infiltrated by the Muslim Brotherhood — CPAC was nonetheless kicked off by Ted Cruz and featured key speeches from characters such as Donald Trump, Ann Coulter and Sarah Palin.

Discredited right-wing conspiracy theories about Benghazi and the IRS have become fully embraced by even “mainstream” GOP figures and were mentioned frequently throughout the convention. While there may be some extreme right-wing activists who are upset with CPAC, that in no way makes the event more “moderate.”

In fact, in what has become almost an annual tradition, while the event shut out groups representing gay and atheist conservatives, it welcomed the sponsorship (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/cpac-once-again-shuts-out-gay-atheist-groups-welcomes-white-nationalists) of an anti-immigrant group led by a white supremacist.

1) Anti-Gay Activism Is Alive And Well

Despite reports that CPAC is becoming (http://www.nationaljournal.com/politics/cpac-welcomes-gay-rights-groups-after-years-of-exclusion-20140219) more (http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/GOProud-gay-rights-Conservative-Political-Action-Conference-CPAC/2014/02/20/id/553802) welcoming (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/07/cpac-gay_n_4922515.html) to gay people and gay rights supporters, anti-gay politicians and rhetoric were still a major factor at the summit. CPAC barred the gay conservative group GOProud from sponsoring or having a booth at the event. The much-touted “compromise” merely allows GOProud members to attend as individuals, which the GOProud founder dubbed an “unconditional surrender (http://www.latimes.com/nation/politics/politicsnow/la-pn-cpac-gay-rights-goproud-conservative-20140219,0,747918.story#axzz2vP9l6W9W).”

Staunchly anti-gay organizations such as CitizenLink (the political arm of Focus on the Family) and the Liberty Alliance, however, were top sponsors (http://www.mra-services.com/CPAC2014/SponsorsByLevel.asp?id=3333). Another sponsor, Tradition, Family, and Property, an ultraconservative Catholic youth group, distributed anti-gay fliers (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/goproud-cpac-beaver) that depicted GOProud as a rainbow-colored beaver undermining the conservative movement.

Main stage speakers didn’t hold back either.

Oliver North urged (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/oliver-north-gop-must-oppose-marriage-equality-it-fought-slavery) the GOP to fight marriage equality with the same tenacity as the fight against slavery. He also suggested that by repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the Obama administration is treating military service members like “laboratory rats in some radical social experiment.”

While conservative talk show host Michael Medved admitted that he supports the right of gay couples to adopt children, he said that conservatives must continue to oppose marriage equality and even denied (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/michael-medved-cpac-states-have-never-banned-gay-marriage-thats-liberal-lie) that same-sex marriage has ever been banned. “There’s never been a state in this country that has ever banned gay marriage, that’s a liberal lie,” he said.

And Dr. Ben Carson, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, won raucous applause for his denunciation (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/ben-carson-gay-people-dont-get-extra-rights-they-dont-get-redefine-marriage) of gay “extra rights,” specifically the right to marry.

Coulter attacked MSNBC for “celebrating the browning of America.” “But if you don’t celebrate it you’re a racist,” she added. “It’s going to be people who are not from America who are going to be in theory funding older, white people who are getting to their Social Security and Medicare age. I don’t think that can last, at some point they’re going to say, ‘Screw it.’”

“I used to think everything was about sex, now I realize everything is about immigration,” she added later. Coulter praised Mitt Romney for taking the “most aggressive” stance on immigration and called on the GOP to nominate another staunchly anti-immigrant candidate.

Coulter ended with this call to arms: “Amnesty is forever and you got to vote for the Republicans one more time and just make it clear; but if you pass amnesty, that’s it, it’s over and then we organize the death squads for the people who wrecked America.”
