View Full Version : Spurs: Should San Antonio Fear Memphis in the Playoffs?

If the season ended today, Spurs would be matched up against the Grizzlies. I am not an expert on Memphis but they seem to still have a gaping hole at the wing slasher role and I haven't seen a ton of upgrade this season. Therefore, if their fat bigs are not producing on at least an above average clip, they seem to have a difficult time against good teams. Is there any reason for the Spurs to fear these guys if they meet the Grizz in 2014 or will they make pelts out of the teddy grahams again like last season?

I like the confidence. I was thinking the same thing. Unless we got a lot worse and they got a lot better but I don't see much difference from last year. If anything, we've slightly improved.

They would be a tough out, then again mostly ANYONE in the West is a tough out at this point. I even think Dallas being a rival would be a tough out, the West is stacked from 1-8.

They're weak on the wings... they haven't really improved upon what we saw from them last year

Would you rather face Dallas or Grizz? I'm thinking Grizz as I believe Dallas has more weapons and could put a streak together with those weapons (Dirk, Matrix, Monta).

Dallas is by far our easiest 1st round matchup.

How about the blazers? They're looking pretty awful. It's not beyond possibility that they could end up as a 7 or 8 seed.

the rockets should (worst matchup even more so than OKC), but SA is like the only team that owns memphis consistently. Swept their asses in the playoffs last year with little effort.

If Amuseddaysleeper starts making gameday threads again and Duncan injures his ankle, TP sleeps with another teammates wife, Manu's arm is in a cast, and Kawhi has to sit out the series because of his knee tendinitis I would say Spurs in 6

Memphis has pretty much completely fallen off last year. The spurs made a joke out of their defense last year. All the spurs did last year was collapse on gasol and zbo and turn zbo to z-ro and bam, their offense was dead. It probably won't be a sweep this time around (or maybe) but it would probably be 4-1.

It seems every since that 011 debacle the Spurs have made it a mission to try and crush that team everytime they meet.

This. Grizz need another creator. Gasol is a good passer but they sorely lack another penetrator besides Conley

I just checked. Their wing guys are currently: T. Allen (sometimes good on D), Tayshaun Prince (a TOSB) and Courtney Lee (a dude with a chick's name).

I'm seeing a lot of overconfidence here guys. I'm hoping the Spurs go to work on them if they meet and don't just assume they will dominate. That kind of attitude is what leads to higher seed first round exits.

Prolly won't matter anyway. I see the Grizz rising to the 7 seed and the Spurs staying at 1.

I haven't been keeping up this year, is Z-Bo staying consistent or on noticeable decline? If he's clearly going down, that would be a huge plus for the Spurs. I still get nightmares from 2011 when he repeatedly abused the midget Dewhataburger in the paint. It was like playing an 8 year old tbh but if that's long gone and ancient history than we're prolly good. At least we have real post defenders now.

yall niggas forgetting last year 3 of those games were very close

now that Splitter got that guap and forgot how to play basketball and Splitter/Duncan lineups are complete garbajosa, they lose that edge they had over Memphis frontcourt last season

and they have more reliable shooting this season. Goes 6 imo, won't be as easy as yall think.

Splitter and Duncan have played well against the Grizz this year; that lineup has been fine since the middle of December tbh. Even if it doesn't, Diaw has shown a great ability to play against Gasol. As much as everyone rags on black coaches, it can't be denied they've missed Hollins this season. We'll see how this new guy fares in the POs.

The Spurs' strategy against Memphis is simple: clog the paint and let their wing players beat you from the perimeter. You can't possibly ask Tony Allen and T Prince carry the scoring load for the Grizzlies. Conley is the only player who shows up against the Spurs. Overall, I'm not worried and I expect the Spurs to finish Memphis in 5 games tops.

Hell to the fuck to the no. lmao. The Grizzlies only beat us a few years ago by pure fluke. Manu was our best player that season and got hurt in the FINAL GAME OF THE YEAR, throwing out entire team balance off. Manu misses the first game and we barely lose it, giving Memphis a ton of confidence and momentum. Randolph has the series of his life and tbh Gasol played off it perfectly. Duncan kept having to go back and forth defending each guy at times because Dyess and Splitter were too soft, so Duncan (who was having his worst season ever), was cashed physically all the time.

I predicted the Spurs would wax those clowns if they met again and sure enough, Grizz got crushed during the season the swept the next time they met in the playoffs.

Going through history, the Spurs OWN the Grizzlies. . .the Spurs' record against them is absolutely hilarious. The Grizzlies were just lucky having that perfect storm of timely injuries and down years (for Spurs) and Randolph selling his soul for one great series the time they won.

I have zero fear of the Grizzlies tbh. Last series I even perfectly predicted the Grizzlies' never cracking 93 points while the Spurs always would, and that's exactly what happened. The matchup is that predictable.

Memphis has some decent 3pt shooters now with Mike Miller & Courtney Lee, but SA is best at exposing their bigs, I see 6 games at best if Memphis gets their 3pt shot going but I think most likely it would be a 5 game series.

They match up well against OKC, but only won 1 out of 4 this season against them, though all games were competitive with KD going off in the 2nd half. If Memphis can contain KD & Alpha has a bad shooting series, it could go down to 6-7 games, though right now I see OKC winning in 5-6.

Problem with Memphis has always been their offense, top defensive teams like OKC & San Antonio are just as good on D but are far better on O, which means they really don't have a shot because they lack a legit go-to scoring wing. Conley is a decent PG but he's not consistent enough as a scorer. For every 20+ point game he has these 10-12 scoring nights where you can't even find him on the court because he doesn't do enough.

Memphis though have won 4 out of their last 5 with 3 road games with wins against Chicago & Portland, they even beat Houston on b2b games with one on the road. Rockets would definitely be worried about matching up with Memphis because they're not an elite defensive team & Memphis has the defenders to contain Harden & Howard.

Mavs will be the toughest match-up of the four teams on the lower half of the playoff table imho. Dirk will begin to play more aggressively and more efficiently come the playoffs, where our experience will turn out to be very helpful. I don't fancy our chance to survive the elite teams like OKC or Spurs, but we have every reason to expect a close 50-50 series if we draw the Lockets or monkeyball for the first round tbh.

They fear no one. In their minds they're striving for a back-to-back, denied them by their own doings, their own recklessness and ignorance of the danger presented them.
