Orange County Register - Derek Anderson will make the Lakers his first free-agent visit early next week. It might not be long afterward Anderson assumes the vacant guard spot in the Lakers' starting lineup.

Anderson, released Wednesday by Portland via the NBA's new amnesty provision, is considering the Lakers, Detroit and Minnesota. He expects to decide by the end of next week, but Anderson is drawn to the idea of starting for the Lakers.

"That's a big selling point," said Anderson's agent, Tony Dutt. "The Lakers are extremely intriguing."

Anderson has not had as much experience handling the ball as the Lakers' previous free-agent target, Antonio Daniels, who signed with Washington. But Anderson (6-foot-5, 195 pounds) is capable and originally played point guard at the University of Kentucky. In an eight-year NBA career, Anderson has averaged 13.1 points, 3.7 assists and 1.2 steals.

Anderson is 31 and would be willing to take the two-year contract the Lakers are limiting themselves to offering for future payroll flexibility. Dutt said the Lakers probably would have to offer the full $5million mid-level salary-cap exception to get Anderson.
"At this stage, that's kind of what's going to be what's offered," Dutt said.

Let me get this straight, DA is still getting his salary from Portland, but WANTs the full MLE to sign with another team? What a greedy SOB.

Players like DA were probably hoping they would get waived via the amnesty clause so they can finally get MAX money (previous salary and new salary combined).

maybe DA wants the fully mle because his current deal ends before this new one will, and he wants to make as much as possible on the extra year/years....

clubalien, sometimes it's better to just not post. Especially when someone's sarcasm is lost on you.

I believe he has 2 years remaining on his Portland contract.

The Lakers only want to offer a two year deal.

I forgot, like Spreewell, Da needs 14 million to feed his family. Anything less than that and he'll have to sell more loyalty T-shirts just to make ends meat. God knows that we don't want him to be forced to sell off one his bentleys.

The Spurs owe DA, without his aholeness we wouldn't have gotten Kerr.

No, the Spurs traded DA and Kerr for SSmith. So DA also cost the Spurs Kerr.

That's right, it was AD that we traded to get back Kerr. My bad.

Just a small point. There was an articule that said that the double dipping for waived players was 50% of the remaining salary over the vet min. If the MLE is 5.0M, DA would get an additional 6M for the 2 years with the Lakers, i.e. (1M+0.5*(5M-1M))/year.

I thought Antoine Walker was crazy to ask for more than the MLE, but then the Heat went and sign-and-traded for more than he was worth. Someone just might give this guy more than he's worth, and that team might be the Lakers.
