View Full Version : Forgotten, but not Gone: The San Antonio Spurs

What do the following teams have in common?

Oklahoma City Thunder
Los Angeles Clippers
Houston Rockets
Miami Heat
Indiana Pacers

I’ll hasten with the answer: each team does not own the best record in the NBA. That title belongs to San Antonio, a team that, for whatever reason, year after year, continues to fly under the radar. An appearance on the biggest of stages, the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat in 7 games, apparently was not enough to garner respect for the bunch.

There are Spurs fans on here in their early 30s who cannot recall a time when the Spurs weren't contenders.

Doug Collins brought it up in the Portland telecast. For 25 years the franchise has had David RobInson or Tim Duncan.

I've only been a true fan since 2001 and cannot fathom how I'll deal with a bad or even subpar team.

Not surprising since the Spurs have always flown under the radar while all of the other teams get the attention.

Spurs could care less what the media thinks of them. They just play the game the way it's supposed to be played.

Clippers won't be a walk over with Doc Rivers as coach. Pop's going to have to be at the top of his game.

That is very true, plus Griffin has gotten alot better as well then last year even when Billups said he needed to toughen up.

Is that when you decided to be a true fan and stop rooting for the Bulls?

tbh the Rockets were my favorite team from 1991 until 1995 due to visiting my t-jones who live there. I followed the Spurs in 1997 when they picked up Nique and my favorite Rocket player Maxwell. I cheered pretty hard when the Spurs won the lottery. However, I still wasn't a fervent supporter until that 2001 season for whatever reason..can't really recall why specifically though.

Never saw a complete Bulls game in my life.

It's amusing to see media use the phrase "fly under radar" when they are the radar operators.

It's remarkable.

I'm only 25, but I started following SA when I was 5-6. Remember the '95 evisceration at the hands of the Rockets vividly, and was so happy to be living in SA in '99.

I remember when this team only won 20 games in a season (ok, yeah, we tanked :lol )--definitely don't take runs like this for granted.

More like 8 seconds. It was about the missed FT.

As an expert in body language and microexpressions, I can tell you that it was most likely a reaction to Leonard entering the game. Nobody will ever know for sure except Lebron, but it was an unfiltered reaction in that precise moment. Now, was he upset that Kawhi was entering the game or was he upset that his free throw was being delayed because Kawhi was checking in? Both are definite possibilities, but either way, he was not reacting to a missed free throw at that point.

If you pause it when he's making the face at the exact instant that he sees Kawhi entering, it's a microexpression of anger, then frustration. His teeth are bared, then he moves into a sour face that resembles sadness mixed with anger (frustration). You can see that he recovers very quickly, but the evidence is there.

Doc was fired in Orlando, and on the verge of being fired in Boston when he was gifted with 2 additional HOF players one summer. He won exactly one ring.

The Clippers and the Spurs are the two teams no one wants to face in the playoffs IMHO.

We almost won one last year. Judging by the reaction here, the Boston fans must have simultaneously want to hang Doc AND themselves.

Yep, I'm one of them. Some of my earliest memories of sports involve trying to read Spurs/Drob articles in the sports section of the Austin paper at around 7 or 8. I'm talking '90/'91. It's going to be very, very weird once the big three retire. A great Spurs team has been such a fixture in my life. I think there will still be a lot of intrigue, a lot of fun to be had, watching the organization try to build another great team, but damn am I going to miss Timmy!

No. It was a reaction to Leonard. You clearly see he spies Leonard and basically says, "Fook!" Classic.

I'm proud to say I've been a fan since the first year they moved here.
The Ice, Capt. Late (Si), Johnny Moore, bruise bros. years were great.
Then came the drought until the Admiral came aboard.
All of it was good, even their losing years. They can't win forever.
Hopefully they lose some of their "fair-weather" fans who do nothing but complain all the time.
