Should be a good test. He'll probably start at PF but RGV runs so small and fast that Daye will have plenty of opportunities to guard the perimeter. Most likely players to match up with are both 6'7".

Daye's willingness to go to the d-league is good. However, it seems like he stands the best chance of getting minutes in the majors during this stretch.

Exactly. If they want to see anything from him this year, this week would be the time. Utah, Lakers, Sacto is as soft stretch as we have for the rest of the season.

He can always go back and forth. Six of the final nine Toros games are at home so that could be worked in with deactivating and resting one of the Spurs players in their games. That might not happen in such a tight race for the best record though.
Tonight's Toros game is on FSSW btw.

Daye is a project and not even a great one. Sure, it would be nice if he turned into anything more than an end of the bench player, but he hasn't demonstrated anything up to this point. He's still young, though, so it's possible that this is his greatest opportunity to make a career for his self. Just off the top of my head, I can't think of too many fringe role players that went through the Spurs system and turned their careers around or made a lasting impact. Gary Neal is easily the most successful to date, but anybody else? Maybe Garrett Temple? Nazr Mohammed? Cory Joseph?
I can't even count Neal because he only went to Austin to rehab from his surgery. Garrett Temple didn't play for the Toros (Rio Grande Vipers), and I don't think Nazr did either. Cory went voluntarily, as did Nando, and we know what happened to him.
Honestly, being assigned to the Toros could be a death knell for Daye. I'd be surprised if he did anything incredible.

Good sign that he accepted the assignment. Next season will be his last chance of staying in the league. With his limited skillset and Bonner hopefully being gone, the Spurs will be his best chance of prolonging his career tbh.

Alonzo Gee also played for the Spurs and was assigned to the Toros and used to start for Cleveland.

Better than rotting behind the bench while Ayres and Bonner get burn in blowouts. It also lets him get more acquainted with the system in a low-consequence environment. Good move, hope he makes the most of it.

tbh he shouldn't look to score the way he always did, he should look at this minutes as a way to test his newly learned moves and schemes.

Exactly. As long as they're pleased with his work ethic and feel like he has a decent enough IQ, he probably replaces Bonner as the secondary stretch four, as well as giving the active roster the depth SF it clearly needs.

He looks like a better all-around player than I thought. He knows how to use his height to contest shots and get off his own shot. He needs to work on posting up, but he can clearly have an advantage there. He seems like a worse offensive player than I thought, however.
I dunno. He looked like the best player on the floor, but he didn't look like a 25-year-old five-year vet should look against d-leaguers. As I said, I wish he had been on the team earlier. I don't think I've seen enough to guarantee his next year if I were the Spurs.

Nice stats. Yes, that's a double-double.
He definitely handles the ball very well for a 6'11" player! He took 12 shots from free throw and missed once, that tells you he can shoot quite well.
Oversized guards like him (and Boris Diaw) are going to do very well within the Spurs system.
He was obviously rusty in this game with the T.O.
I hope he keeps playing more for the Toros and plays in the position where the Spurs expect him to play. Unfortunate for this game, he was playing at the PF position and not the SF position.

I get that the D league is just a tool for the NBA, but it must suck from a competition standpoint that higher level guys come and go. Then again, if you take the D league seriously enough to care about the season, you're probably not ever going to see the next level anyhow.
Nando was willing to go, and then asked for a trade. I expect Daye will do the same. It's how the Spurs sign a guy and then dump him.... by having him request to be traded after being D-leagued.

I think if he hadn't gone to Austin, he would have definitely been dumped. They want to take a look to decide about next year. His deal is only partially guaranteed. If they cut him by 30 June, they only have to pay $250K.
Spurs currently have 14 players under contract, including Daye. They have three FAs, plus Daye as a cheap cut, to make decisions on. They also have a waiting list in Europe, plus a first rounder this year. Lots of variables.

Ah, well with DeColo, he knew he would never be in a regular rotation as long as Manu, Marco, Green and Mills were there and healthy. Daye has a tiny shot at being the 13th man this season since he theoretically fills a need -- but he can't ask for anything but waivers right now. Doing that would be kind of dumb for a couple of reasons.

what's your impression of Daye's play last night? you always have a great knowledge of d-league play, so am curious about your assessment if you watched the game.He can do a little bit of everything as has been noted above, so just as a type he's not going to be lost in the Spurs system. The plays being run for him on offense looked very Kawhi-like. He usually set up near the top of the arc then would drive in from there or move into a high post-up. Predictably soft -- he's fine with contact and got to the line a lot but he's not going to get many and-1s. Made good cuts to the basket after a teammate's penetration but was always calling for passes to his chest -- why not raise your arms to get it high or even get an alley oop? Got one 3pt from the corner. Ran the floor decently though not the greatest athlete. Good handles and passing.
On D he was playing as more of a traditional PF, which was a problem against the Vipers who don't run any post-up plays at all. Austin's cover was always hanging out at the arc and Daye couldn't quite prevent good looks at three pointers. His help defense was good when the paint got crowded; slow to rotate to drives from the more wide open Vipers halfcourt sets.
For the Spurs, I think he'd get his points from the arc, transition and cuts to the basket. He has a nice fadeaway that could work off the occasional post-up. I want to see him guard the perimeter more before passing a judgement there. He is an NBA player, but that doesn't mean he's a Spurs rotation player.
