View Full Version : Spurs sign Damion James to 15th spot.

Not sure the exact details as a friend of mine, who is close with Damion, just told me about this.
My guess is Spurs signed him to a non-guaranteed deal for the remaining of this year and next year.
Good competition for Daye for the next 6-7 months as Bonner's roster spot will need to be replaced. My guess is the FO would like to fill the spot with the best value as possible-- due to potential new deals with Patty/Bobo.
Confirmed: Spurs sign Damion James to a 10 day deal.

Yeah, much greater chance of being of a future Toro than a future Spur.

I wanted the Spurs to pick him in 2010. Injuries derailed his career, but he's never looked all that great.
The Spurs usually like to give their 10-day guys decent playing time to evaluate them. Does this mean Green is going to sit out some time? Either way, it seems to imply the team sees Daye as a forward and not a wing.

I always liked him back in his Texas days playing alongside Durant and D.J. Augustin. He was a bust with the Nets though. Don't expect anything from him here, either. Just a seat filler. Will probably get some run when we rest our guys for the playoffs though.

Yeah. I was thinking how the Warriors see Draymond Green as a stretch-four they'll play at the three in certain situations.
Shame Daye got hurt. The PF depth is really bad right now. At least the Warriors are likely to play small a lot tonight.

I wouldn't say the PF depth is bad. Duncan starts at PF alongside Splitter, Diaw is his backup, Leonard can play PF in a small lineup, and Bonner is a fourth option. For a playoff rotation, we need only two.

Neither Duncan nor Splitter count as PFs in my book. Diaw is the top PF with Bonner as his backup and Leonard and Daye filling in the cracks. I agree with you that with Duncan and Splitter starting, it's not a big deal. But when the Spurs start resting people, the lack of any big with range and mobility outside of Diaw will show.

I thought the playoff roster was set on March 1 (Playoff Eligibility Waiver Deadline) or does that only apply to players waived from an NBA team where this guy is a dleaguer and is thus eligible?

Players that have not played in the NBA this season can be signed until the final day of the regular and be playoff eligible.
Players that did play in the NBA this season had to be waived by March 1st. Then they can signed up until the final day of the regular season and are playoff eligible.
Players waived after March 1st (like Ben Gordon), can be signed but are not playoff eligible.

Wow he hits a lot of threes. I looked at his stats (eventhough it's small sample size) from his rookie year, he never hits a three and only attempted like less than 5 to 7? He looks good now, well it's D-League but still nice to see he's playing well on that league coming from an injury. Did he had the same injury with James Anderson?

If you played in the NBA this season, you must be released by 1 March. You can be signed any time after that. If you haven't played in the league this year, there are no applicable dates at all. That's how we signed TMac last year and now James.

It'll be dirt cheap to sign him, or someone, for the remainder of the season at minimum. We'll want someone to eat minutes in the last two games. Whoever, plus Daye, could easily play 25 minutes each over the next two games.

James looks taller than he's listed. He seems to be more 6-8/6-9 than 6-7. Either way, it's good that he's on the team. Daye is probably going to be playing exclusively a four these next two games. Both the Lakers and Rockets play small. Having James means Pop can also rest Green or Leonard in addition to the Big Three.

I can't believe we signed him through the season (which includes the playoffs) today. I thought it was a questionable 10-day to begin with, as he can't shoot a lick and doesn't possess any sort of unique skill set that he can bring to the table.
Also, I was very disappointed with his lack of effort he showed in the 5 minutes and 32 seconds he played in the 4th quarter vs OKC. He looked like he didn't want to be out there, and fittingly didn't record a single stat to show for it. And look, I'm a Texas Longhorns fan, and I like Damion James--but I don't think he fits in with the Spurs. There's a reason he was drafted 18 overall and was quickly a bust. He doesn't belong in the NBA and he shouldn't be on this great team. I guess Pop thinks his raw athleticism is good to practice against for the guys, but otherwise, keeping him is just nonsensical. Unless of course...they just want him to eat up minutes in these last 2 regular season games...but if you ask me, that's just a waste of money. But...I guess if it saves Manu or one of the guys from injury...maybe it'll be worth it in the end.

I don't understand why anyone would object to this. Since they're nowhere near the tax, the money is irrelevant, so why wouldn't they spend what amounts to virtually nil for a professional sports franchise to add depth at the one spot they desperately need it at? Besides, physically he's exactly what they need in a depth SF anyway.

Terrible on offense, but I thought he was fine on D; he rebounded really well too. What most stood out was how athletic he was next to Houston. Doubt it'll come into play but he's quick enough and has better hands than Errors to be a factor in transition.

He's good enough physically to be a stifling and versatile defender. But he has a lot to learn to get the mental part down, I feel. He was easily the best defensive wing tonight, but that's not saying much with Beli, Manu and Daye as his main competitors. He's behind Jospeh in that regard, though, and really far behind the New Two. He's always been a dominant rebounder for his position, however, so he has value in small-ball lineups.

DJ has BUSTED OUT of his guaranteed rookie deal already. He should be a little hungrier than he appears. It seems he still thinks of himself as a first round pick, when in actuality, he's hanging on to the lowest rung of the NBA scrub ladder with one fingernail.
This is looking more and more like a solid that RC is doing for Rick Barnes, DJ's college coach at UT.

That is exactly why I asked about Damion's defense. If he can't play any defense, then I don't like the signing. I would have preferred someone like Metta World Peace, that is, if Metta was in good enough physical condition to play. I mean, unless he was known for his defense, I don't see why the Spurs signed him. I felt that their main need is/was a backup SF that can play defense if needed in spot minutes.
I like that quote from Damion, but I don't really like his tenacity toward showing it out there on the court. It didn't look like he showed that he really, really wanted it on the defensive side of the ball. That's not good enough if you're trying to make the NBA.
As for Austin Daye, I'm not impressed with him at all. He looked OK in his first couple of games but he's been absolute shit since then. I wanted him off the court in the 4th quarter of last night's game, didn't think it was a good move to put him out there when the Spurs had a chance to win the game. If Pop was testing him, then he unfortunately he didn't do himself any favours out there.

He really hasn't moved around much. He was witth the Nets for three years until they failed to pick up his option. Then he was in the d-league until the Spurs picked him up. All that needed to happen was that the Nets coaches were not good at helping James shoot better.

put me in the "dont understand why people are upset" camp. he's a camp body for next season. he's a body to have on the floor while the starters rest. he won't play a minute in the playoffs. the coaching staff will have a long look at him in the offseason. if there's nothing there, then they cut him with minimal investment. if they can squeeze some kind of NBA quality skill out of him, then they've found someone who can contribute on the cheap.
now if someone has an idea of a better player that could have been signed that can help today, thats a whole different argument. but james' signing is looking towards the future, not as a playoff contributor.

I don't expect the next Leonard. You won't find that on the waiver wire. What I want is EFFORT. This kid is NOT acting like this is another chance. He's acting like he EXPECTS to be in the league next year when he didn't play an NBA game this year until we called his sorry ass up from whatever fucking dleague team he was on. That's Pop's exact MO. Green was cut his first time around. So was Devin Brown, in 2003, and it cost him a ring. If you're an end of the bencher, you'd better not be mailing it in.
Baynes, Ayres, Bonner, Daye, and Cojo remain the "break glass" unit to burn up garbage time minutes, if any. None of them should play any meaningful minutes at all. That's all the depth we need beyond our 9 man rotation.

I hope yourew right. But I still thought James did enough to stay on. He was the only other "natural three" on the team besides Leonard.

A quote from a David Aldridge article on the CotY thread:
"Popovich's demands for excellence -- no matter who's on the floor -- never has anything to do with a given game. Rather, it is about the elusive, unattainable goal of beating the game of basketball itself."

Watched him close in the Houston game and I saw nothing wrong with his effort. His defense was oK but he looked like he tried on that end.
Put me in the camp of not understanding letting him go

And it may not be the end of the road for him. Like I said, both Danny Green and Devin Brown were cut loose once each before they ultimately stuck with the Spurs. This time around, however, Pop thought so little of DJ that they didn't pick him up for the playoffs.
There must have been a mistake in the second signing, though. It was said that he was signed for the remainder of the season, and that would include the playoffs. It must have been another 10 day, which expired after the last game.
Via McDonald:
Damion James still on roster, not with team for playoffs.

Damn. That must sting.
I saw that he was on the inactive list for Game 1. I guess there's no point in dragging him all over creation and paying per diem and hotel money to sit on the inactive list. If he were there, two players would have to be inactive. Now, I believe it's only one.
Yeah, I haven't heard of a team doing that unless a player has done something wrong, which it sounds like he hasn't. Beats being cut for him though.
