It's really simple. You play your A team tonight and if you win, you can pretty much rest them the remaining 5-6 games after which will give them plenty of time to rest up while enjoying clinching HCA throughout the playoffs. Don't think of worst-case scenarios and just play the fucking game the way they know how, run your shit, keep your hands up in front of the refs and let the ball roll where it may.

Bingo.
If the Spurs lose tonight, the Thunder will only be 2 games back in the loss column with 6 games to go. That will mean the Spurs would need to win five of their final six to assure themselves HCA, assuming the Thunder run the table (which I don't consider completely unlikely, considering how well they are playing and the fact that everybody left in their path is already closing up shop for the playoffs or offseason) Wouldn't that be harder on the team than just playing everybody tonight and going for a win?

plus tonight's game is worth 2x a regular game. why in the hell would you at least not TRY to win it?
as it stands a series between OKC and Spurs is a toss up. So home court matters a lot in this case

It's because there was never really closure for the 2012 WCF.
Since OKC was unceremoniously removed by Memphis from last years playoffs, the Spurs never got the re-match that many expected to be inevitable. That was great for the Spurs, as they got a chance to sweep Memphis and rid that monkey from their back en route to the Finals...but it still leaves that wound left by OKC untended . Sure, we've gotten a few regular season "revenge" wins on them since then, but they've got the 3-0 advantage this year to throw a little salt on things.
Spurs fans talk about how the Thunder are different without Beardy, and how they can't match up with the Spurs now...but everybody knows that has yet to be proven. Until it is, OKC is going to be the number one team on everybody's radar.

Good thread. All this mini-Pop bullshit talk about resting players, B2B, it doesn't matter, wait 'til the playoffs, fuck the NBA, fuck TNT, blah. blah, blah is just totally masking "I'm afraid to lose to the Thunder". They've won some pretty challenging B2B's lately. They've beat Miami, Portland, Golden State and the Clips. The Thunder won't even have Thabo or Perkins.

It will be interesting to see how Pop handles this game. Hell, he may still be undecided as what to do. Honestly, this has been a great streak for the Spurs and they have piled up the W's but there have only been a handful of really impressive wins against quality opponents. I know we beat Miami, Chicago, Portland, Golden State and Indiana decisively but those teams weren't playing there best BB and were dealing with injuries, fatigue and chemistry problems.
OKC would be a fantastic game and a challenge (OKC is rested and Spurs have been playing a lot) but in the long run, it probably doesn't mean much. I'm confident the Spurs will get the #1 seed regardless of whether they win or lose tonight. Continuing the streak would be nice but being healthy for the playoff means more.
So, does Pop play everyone and go for the win or does he play the bench guys (who have been very important to the team success as well) and still have a shot at winning? With a loss, Pop would get what he wants as far as preaching his mantra of always improving. With a win, HCA is all but sealed up.
My guess - The starters play but Pop doesn't run his guys out there for extended minutes to secure a "W". Most everyone's minutes will stay in the 20's except for Leonard. The goal isn't necessarily to win but to use this freebie as a chance to see different match-ups. A total experimental game. I'm cool with that.

I want the Spurs to play as if it was a playoff game. If the Spurs win tonight, in OKC, on the second night of a back to back, against a rested Thunder team, then the Spurs chances will likely be very good this post season. However, it would be funnier if it was our bench that did it. Either way, a Spurs win could provide some positive speculation on the post season.

Your team is still ringless, and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Even if by some (referee) miracle the Thunder make it to the Finals, they'll get their shit pushed in by Miami again.

This game did not seem as important to the Spurs as it was to the Thunder
We only saw 'Playoff Duncan' for a few minutes after his incident with Perkins.
We were slow to the ball all night, bad spacing, no defense, flat shots, bad fouls.

Dallas. Memphis can wear out OKC and be extra physical with them.
Dallas, because the Grizzlies match up excellently against the Thunder and could give them a difficult time.
OKC would easily beat Memphis, but at least there would be the hope that Tony Allen gets Durant with a cheap shot, or Z-Bo gets angry and breaks Ibaka's jaw:lol..
Memphis. I like the way Dallas matches up with OKC
That's the other thing, I think Dallas would give Okc a much harder time than Memphis
Either, we would have it easier against dallas or if we played memphis there is a chance dallas knocks off okc or wears them down severely
Memphis so that Dallas plays OKC
Dallas. OKC's bigs wear on ours. And I like the idea of Gasol and Z-Bo making life hard on OKC down low for a series.
Dallas plays OKC well so Memphis - as long as Pop plays Splitter vs MEM, Spurs are ok.
