Belinelli emerges as next great Spurs role player
By JON KRAWCZYNSKI (AP Basketball Writer) 13 hours ago AP - Sports
On the list of free agents available last summer, Marco Belinelli's name certainly didn't stand out.
He spent six years bouncing around the league, was traded once for an on-his-last-legs Devean George and again for failed lottery pick Julian Wright. So when he signed a two-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs in July, it didn't grab much attention.
Tom Thibodeau knew better. The Bulls coach saw firsthand what Belinelli was capable of during his one year in Chicago and knew that San Antonio was the perfect place for him.
''We hated to lose him,'' Thibodeau said.
Belinelli is averaging career highs in shooting percentage, 3-point percentage, rebounds and assists while his 11.3-points per game average is just below his best season (11.8) for New Orleans in 2011-12.

I don't know man. You can't always compare him to Turk tbh. I think it took him like 3 years to get out of that hangover.
However Tony Parker was the reason why we lost that series. Dude kept bricking 3 pointers after Phil basically dared him to shoot. He shot 6/27 on threes. :lol
Payton also gets way too much credit though. Parker's jumper was raw as hell that year.

Parker was horrendous that series. Shot 7-23 in game five. Shot 4-18 in game 6. You can also blame him for 2006 as well - he was the only member of the "big 3" that under-performed against Dallas. Jump ahead a few years to 2013 and he's still choking away championships for the Spurs. You can always count on Tony Parker to disappoint come playoff time.

His defense (defensive effort and positioning) was the best he's had in a long time. His shot was bound to start falling, it's the rest of his game that was bringing the team down. It was nice to see him put it together.

I'm sure Pop crawled up in his ass and spread his spines after that horrible first round series. Beli doesn't need much motivation though. He knows whats at stake and he's had big time playoff performances before.

New series, fresh start. Hell, even if this is his only good game of the post-season, that's something. The Blazers might want to take heart in the Spurs being unlikely to shoot that well again, but Green, Splitter and Ginobili won't score so few points again, either. Different players coming up big in different games is what Spurs basketball is all about.

He's officially a treat that Stotts will plan against... that's exactly who you want Marco to be... good shit...

The spurs got any shot they wanted and they were all poorly defended.
I hope they defend that poorly again.

I mean, if Portland seriously allows Pop to play 10 deep, I don't see how they can beat the Spurs. Their only hope of winning the series is to wear the Spurs out, and they won't do that by letting Mills, Beli and especially Baynes go toe to toe with their starters for more than token minutes.

I guess you were wrong. Bellineli WILL have an impact this series. Vince Carter and Monta were just bad match ups for him against the Mavs.

I guess I was. He wasn't at all necessary, though. But it's always nice for bench players to play well. If Portland fails to attack Beli, and Marco's shot stays on, he may well be a big-time performer in later games.

I'm not a Beli fan, but he did great tonight. The Spurs need him to at least hit shots and he did just that.

Props to Beli for his shooting and more importantly much improved defense tonight. Hopefully Danny gets it going as he's going to be the bigger key in this series IMO but hope Beli keeps it up tbh
