Congrats to Pop on this award he undoubtedly cherishes like a sharp outbreak of Ebola. :lol

:flag:

Also of note, Pop joins Don Nelson and Pat Riley as the only 3 time winners of the CotY award in NBA history.

Pop is usually recognized by friend and foe alike to be the best active coach in the NBA today. He's so good every year that he could win it every year, but because of the continued excellence, he has to have a year like this with 62 wins, a long winning streak, coming back from the 2013 loss, etc. to get the award.

First team since the merger to not have a single player average 30 minutes per game. Not first #1 seed, first team period. Damned impressive that they got the best record by 3 games.

To me, it's not all that shocking that Buford hasn't won EoY. Sure, he's been the GM in charge while sustained contender has been here, but he hasn't done all that much in any one year. Looking at recent history:

2014: No way he deserved it this year. I mean, all he did was stash Jean-Charles and sign Beli and Ayres. Many still (ignorantly, if you ask me) believe Splitter's deal was unwise.

2013: He gets credit for re-signing so many players with limited resources, but he still just kept the same players. Duncan deserves the most credit for taking the pay cut necessary to bring the team back.

2012: By far Buford's best season of recent memory. Traded for Leonard and Jack (dumping Jefferson for only a pick) and signed Diaw and Mills. He also extended Parker to the biggest steal of a contract this side of the rookie scale. Buford should have won the award this season, but without the benefit of hindsight, Bird did seem like a worthy candidate.

2011: Pat Riley owned, and Buford re-signed Jefferson. Nothing to see here. He should get credit for bringing in Splitter and Green, but neither of those guys really showed much that year.

2010: Traded for Jefferson, signed McDyess, drafted Blair. Didn't seem bad at the time, but this off-season led to two straight disappointing post-seasons.

The years before 2010 were pretty much based on the Spurs trying to squeeze out as much as they could from their aging (and really expensive) Big Three. One can argue that the team made quite a few short-sided moves in an attempt to save money or add that final piece. I don't see how RC would really be to blame for that, but he certainly doesn't deserve special praise.

Burford's been a great GM mainly because he has managed to keep the Spurs' core together. That's a point every GM wants to be able to reach some day. But folks win EoY awards to making bold changes, and that's just not the Spurs' way. Outside of 2011-2012, the Spurs have evolved slowly, making a couple of low-key additions each year. When you have folks like Riley, Ujiri and Bird making huge signings and trades, it's easy for the Spurs' subtle ways to get overlooked.

Lost his two best assistants and we have a better regular season.

RC has to be a part of this. Leonard, Diaw, Splitter, Marco...
And basically giving it to Patrick straight... You don't need to be Blair.

But is that really the only criterion for being a good GM? Making big signings? Clearly, that isn't always a sign of a great GM. Maintaining a steady tradition of greatness, while making necessary changes each year, is arguably more impressive.

Yes. But you don't get season awards for career achievements. Buford has about the best resume you can get for a GM. But there are other executives who have more impressive flashes.

Congratulations to Pop!! Well deserved and I'm glad he won it! The loss of his two closest assistants and bringing the team back from the disastrous end to last season have to have figured greatly in this.

I hope we win tomorrow night. Be lousy for him to get this and then lose HCA.

Amazed coach Bud didn't get any votes. What he's done with what should have been a bottom-of-lottery Atlanta team is far more impressive than what Kidd, Doc, or even Thibs did this year.

I said earlier in the season Pop would win it, and he could win it every year if it was truly about coaching. This season it defaulted to coaching, since it's hard to give a CotY award to a guy who misses the playoffs, but the Suns were fantastic.

Jackson is a horrible x&O guy, I know you are joking, but a team with that little ball movement and so many iso plays points to a horrible coach. And with the talent that the team has, it's shocking that GSW is only middle of the pack offensively.

Well deserved and he joins rare company with Nellie and Pat. I am a little disappointed though. If they had stayed the only 3 timers long enough perhaps the NBA would have taken Auberbach's name off the COY award and swapped out the statue for something more festive.

This is why the EoY award should have a 3-year lag. 2014's voting should be based on an executive's accomplishments from 2011-2014.

Exec of the Year is awarded to the guy who got the shiniest toys that year.

Buford's legacy is the sustained excellence of the Spurs and the number of NBA franchises that have turned over their basketball operations to Buford disciples.

Rick Carlisle:
"Why don't we just give him Coach of the Century?"

I liked Carlisle's words to Craig Sager as well, ' You're the best, We love ya. Fight your ass off man!' :toast

A class act...and boy, it's hard for me to say nice things about anyone associated with the Ponies! :lol

Funny thing is, I don't think I've hated any of the Mavs coaches the past 10 years or so; it's their owner who I'd like to push in the Riverwalk.

Pop was a deserving winner, but I said this probably about a year ago and it bears repeating: The extensive praise for him, while generally deserved, is really just a backhanded compliment about the Spurs. What they're really saying is, they can't believe how a team that doesn't look all that impressive on paper (to their ignorant, untrained eye) has been a top 3 team for the past 3-4 years, despite the lack of a true superstar in that time. It's to the point now where Pop and his system receive too much credit and the individual talent on the team doesn't receive nearly enough.

Yes, I agree with you strongly. The Spurs win because they are smart and cohesive. But they mostly win because of talent. They're not a super-Bulls like team that is coached up to far exceed their talent level. SA has three HoFers and three others who are top-15 at their positions.
