View Full Version : Phil Jackson zings San Antonio

:rolleyes Let this argument rage again... are we or are we not a dynasty? PJ says no, obviously.

Phil Jackson is the Knicks’ president now, but he couldn’t help himself from taking a little shot at the San Antonio Spurs, one of his chief rivals when he coached the Lakers.

Jackson was talking about wanting Carmelo Anthony to take less money in free agency in order for the Knicks to have more flexibility. He cited Tim Duncan, who has done it in San Antonio to help keep the Spurs together and contending.

But right after Jackson praised the Spurs, he retracted his statement and gave them a little zing.

“Tim Duncan making the salary he's making after being part of a dynasty - not a dynasty, I wouldn't call San Antonio a dynasty -- a force, a great force,” Jackson said. “They haven't been able to win consecutive championships but they've always been there. San Antonio has had a wonderful run through Tim's tenure there as a player. He's agreed to take a salary cut so other players can play with him so they can be this good. And that's the beginning of team play.”
Jackson guided the Lakers to five titles - a three-peat and one back-to-back – in 11 seasons as coach. They beat the Spurs four times in the playoffs under Jackson and were beaten once by San Antonio.

The Spurs have won four titles since 1999, almost won their fifth last season and had the best record in the NBA this season.

he's got a great point. But even an unbiased person like me sees the dynasty. Most winning franchise in the past 20 years, 4 times champions, most winning coach, 2nd most winning big 3 in history. There are no if ands or buts. It's a dynasty.

I see no big problem with what he said. BUT uttering Carmelo in the same sentence as Duncan now.... :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao :lmao v

Whether he's wrong or right, there's a condescending smugness from Phil that makes me hate him. Even back in his Bulls days, when there was no rivalry with the Spurs, and therefore I had no reason to hate him, I still hated him. Hope he crashes and burns with the Knicks.

That said, he is a hell of a coach though.

Phil don't give a shit if he crashes and burns in New York, as he's getting paid huge money in a last NBA job either way.

As there is not a universally accepted definition of a dynasty in sports, his opinion is just as self serving as Spurs fans.

Phillip's just salty his last coaching gig ended in a 2nd round sweep tbh. Even with Kobe, Bynum, and Gasol he got broomed by a team with one All-Star.

Na he's always taken jabs at the Spurs though. Just part of the rivalry. He also picked us to beat Miami last year though.

As successful as he has been and despite the championships Phil has brought to their organizations, it is interesting to note how much both Jerry Krause and Jerry Reinsdorf and then the Buss family members not named Jeanie, all seemed to hate him.

Bullshit. First of all they should have won 5 straight titles 03-07. Even still, they were the most dominant team for most of the last decade and refused to die in the current decade. So yes it's a dynasty, fuck you, period.

Disagree - if you're a contender 5 years in a row, that means a lot.

By that logic, the 2013 Spurs would be equal to the 97 Spurs because they both "didn't get it done." It's a false dichotomy.

b) i didn't need to. after a moronic statement like that, anything after that is just blablablabla

seriously though. first of all, i've made my nationality publicly known tbh, so if u want to use nationality as a diss, at least get it right
secondly, annoucning somebody's nationality isn't a diss. calling harlem canadian isn't a diss. calling me chinese (which is just wrong) isn't a diss.

As if coaching great talent automatically disqualifies someone from being considered a great coach. Obviously great talent is the main ingredient in championship teams (with the odd exception, such as the '04 Pistons), so a coach can almost never win without it, but it's not as simple as that. If it were, the Lakers would have won it in '04 and the Heat in '11.

Despite his history, I don't really see this as a shot at the Spurs, so much as it is an antiquated mindset. Professional sports are a lot different today than they were 10-20 years ago, from the constant turnover in personnel to the immense scrutiny, etc. In this day and age, 3 championships and sustained excellence for the better part of a decade constitutes a dynasty and the fact that the Spurs have eclipsed both thresholds easily makes them that. You'll see a team go back-to-back many times over before you see a comparable to them.

Good old Phil think like most fans. If you dont win consecutive titles=default on it not being a dynasty.

You dont domininate and win 4 championship in a 10 year span and not call it a dynasty franchise. At least with the Duncan era for sure.

The last two of those don't belong when talking about his successes (well, Payton did win with Miami a few years later). Actually, pretty embarrassing that team couldn't win more than a game against a relatively unheralded Pistons team.

SA fans always seem to have an inferiority complex arouind Phil. There's a reason he has 11 championships. Dude's the GOAT coach - has the right to talk trash. He wouldn't have lost to Avery Johnson with homecourt and prime TD/prime Manu. He also wouldn't have choked away that championship to Miami last year by sitting Tim.

Phil Jackson is a poor sport. He is the poorest sport I have ever seen in a coaching level.

He is also petty and arrogant. His good fortune with coaching the highest caliber stars of his eras does not make him a decent human being.

He is a very small, very mean (indicating small) charactered man.

Next to the definition of low-class in the dictionary is a picture of Phil Jackson.

In the end all "dynasty" is, is a word that a small amount of people decided the definition of for basketball terms. That shit wasn't voted on. So there is no defined description for it. The Rockets won b2b, but sure as hell weren't a dynasty.

Spurs taking 4 titles in 9 years and 3 in 5 plus staying a major threat for the vast majority of 18 years = dynasty imo. Jackson is just taking the one thing he has over Pop and saying it's a requirement. No doubt if SA went b2b he'd say they had to 3peat.

The Lakers were the luckiest team in NBA history. 2000 was their only legit championship with Kobe and Shaq. 2001 Duncan injured, and 2002 Derek Anderson injured and they need the refs to literally cheat to beat Sacramento. Spurs or Sacramento should've won in 2002 no doubt, but the Luckers got lucky.

He's right technically Kanye lover. Spurs are a great team, but have been unable to win back to back in order to be called a dynasty. Most dont even refer to that Lakers team as a dynasty. The word is grossly overused now a days anyway
