NEW YORK (AP) -- Dana Reeve, who spent nine years caring for her paralyzed husband, Christopher Reeve, until his death last year, announced Tuesday that she has lung cancer.

Reeve, 44, said she decided to disclose her illness following rumors about her health in the media.

"I have recently been diagnosed with lung cancer, and am currently undergoing treatment," Reeve said in a statement. "I have an excellent team of physicians, and we are optimistic about my prognosis."

"Now, more than ever, I feel Chris with me as I face this challenge," she said. "As always, I look to him as the ultimate example of defying the odds with strength, courage and hope in the face of life's adversities."

Reeve, who starred in the "Superman" films, was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident in 1995. He died October 10, 2004.

Dana Reeve, an actress, was a constant companion and supporter of her husband during his long ordeal and his work for a cure for spinal cord injuries.

She is chairwoman of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, which funds research on paralysis.

To date, it has awarded $55 million in research grants and $7.5 million in quality of life grants

Was she a heavy smoker?

It is always assumed that lung cancer patients smoked. Smoking is only a risk factor, and a lot of the time the cancer developed elsewhere and moved into the lungs.

This is horrible, I hope that it is treatable.

I wonder if this is George W Bush's fault too.

Christopher said it was his fault, that he was in a wheel chair to begin with.

Wasn't Edwards the one that said that Bush's stance on stem cell research was basically responsible for Reeves not being able to walk yet?

I may be slightly off, but I remember it was something completely outrageous.

Wouldn't it have been him flying off his horse and landing on his neck that caused him to not be able to walk?

Yeah, Edwards made a crazy comment about it, but I don't recall Reeve himself ever blaming Bush for his paralyzation.

He was just an open advocate for Stem Cell research.

Very true - a good friend to my family died last year of lung cancer and had never smoked. It's a vicious cancer, too - the best of luck to Dana Reeve.

He made the quote about circa 2002 I believe.

Edwards repeated another pathetic line, but yes Christopher Reeve did say this.

That's a gross oversimplification of what he said.

"If we'd had full government support, full government funding for aggressive research using embryonic stem cells from the moment they were first isolated, at the University of Wisconsin in the winter of 1998 -- I don't think it unreasonable to speculate that we might be in human trials by now," the actor told the newspaper.

Ask somebody else to explain it to you. I give up.
