Patty's problem isn't his speed. When he's guarding a running player, and the other player stops/changes directions, Patty just keeps going. And Jose was nailing jumpers over him earlier in the series.

his peskiness and lateral movement is unique, we need to utilize his underrated defense

He defended him much better than Parker did. Maybe that's why Pop had Patty and Tony out there for a while?

Patty was AWESOME on D tonight. Huge upgrade over Neal. Definitely played better D than Parker tonight.

first game this series where Patty brought something to the table ... and thankfully it was defensively as well ... good job mate

Cause his legs cross over each other when he moves laterally rather than shuffling

Pattys D is where he really shows his potential. His lateral footspeed trounces anyone save maybe TP in short bursts. Maybe cory joseph too. Its the primary reason I think he can be much better than guys like Belli or Danny Green or last seasons Gary Neal. Marco and Gary are offensive chuckers with zero potential for defensive improvement while Green never learned how to dribble a basketball.

If Mills makes good decisions consistently, he will be invaluable moving forward. However the Spurs are going to need his offense more than his defense if you ask me. Lets hope hes ready for the intensity and pressure of both playing lock down d and being a guy who can find his own shot.
