State lawmakers claim they are serious about solving school finance problems during the special session, but News 4 WOAI learned Tuesday, some senators, including one from San Antonio, left town for vacation.

San Antonio senator Leticia van de Putte is on vacation in Bermuda, News 4 WOAI learned. Van de Putte claims she planned her Bermuda vacation a year ago before the special sessions on school finance started.

In a release issued Tuesday, Van de Putte says she was told if anything came up on school finance, she would have 24 hours notice to make it back, but the senator also says there was not a way for her to return to Austin in time.

Parents that talked to News 4 WOAI were upset.

“To put the education on the back and take care of their immediate gratifications instead of taking care of business, that's a really bad call,” parent Lisa Dominguez said.

Van de Putte is not the only lawmaker on vacation. News 4 WOAI learned Houston's Jon Lindsay was vacationing in New Mexico and Dallas' John Carona went to Colorado on business.

Senator Frank Madla is absent, but has a doctor’s excuse, officials said. He is recovering from a hospital visit.

Senators Carona and Lindsay did make in back to Austin late Tuesday. They will be part of the debate on school finance which started Tuesday afternoon.

Who are the people that keep voting her back into office?

The EN on 8/6 reports:

Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, said she told Dewhurst it's time to surrender until the Texas Supreme Court determines whether the current school funding system, which relies heavily on local school property taxes, is constitutional.

Bitch! No wonder she wanted to give up so fucking quickly.

Van de Puette shares part of the blame for not coming up with a compromise school finance bill in the regular session and the two previous special sessions, but Lt. Gov. Dewhurst (?) and Governor Perry deserve the lion's share of the blame for not making this a higher priority until their butts are in a sling. Hell, they had the time to argue about Cheerleading.

This news release sounds like it was written by the Perry Camp.

SHE'S IN FUCKING BERMUDA! SHE WAS TRYING TO PASS FAT LEGISLATION EARLIER THIS YEAR, AND NOW SHE'S IN BERMUDA.

Dan, just kindly STFU and stop turning something about a stupid senator into partisan politics. `

If she doesn't like what they come up with she can always flee to New Mexico like last time.

This would be a different situation if the Democrats controlled the legislature and actually had more than the obliguary nod yes or no on the new plan the Republicans propose. Otherwise, .Democrat legislators can always delay the vote if they feel they have a chance in hell of stopping it.

Yes, it's really stupid she's in Bermuda, but she's at least getting a vacation when she's doing nothing while the GOP gets nothing done in Austin.

All the Lege (plus Perry) gets a big fat F in my book.

Nbadan, do you actually live in Texas? How can someone who posts so much on politics either (A.) not be sure of who the Lt. Governor is, or (B.) not know whether he is to blame for the legislature not coming up with a resolution on school finance?

The Lieutenant Governor in Texas is very powerful, or at least used to be. The Texas Consitution was rewritten after the Civil War & creates a weak Governorship. This is mainly because all the appointed carpetbagger governors who were appointed durning reconstruction left a really bad taste in everyone's mouth. The Lt. Governor has the power during the legislative process. It was Dewhurst's responsibility to ramrod this thing through the legislature.

Unfortunately, there was also a democratic representative that missed an important vote in the house because she was on vacation in France.

Dude, he was unsure about the spelling.

Well, if that was the case, consider that post a public informational message on what a ineffectual hack Dewhurst (and everyone else) is.

I am seriously considering putting an age limit on elected offices. Amateur hour is getting old quickly.
