Dirk Nowitzki has acknowledged he will take a paycut from the $22.7 million he made this season.

The key for the Dallas Mavericks and Nowitzki is to find a deal that will keep the star forward happy while allowing the team to continue to add talent.

“We want to get better as a team,” Nowitzki said. “And I’m pretty sure I’m not going to sign Kobe’s deal – unfortunately (Bryant signed a two-year, $48-million extension). We’ll find a good way where I feel respected for what I did and we still have enough money left for us to get great players in here.
Cubes has been great to me and been loyal to me for a long, long time. I’m sure we’re going to find a great solution for everybody.”
A deal in the area of $10 million per year could work for the two sides.

he's not even worth that much. Harikiri is his only way out with honor.

If Dirk really wanted to win a ring, he would sign with San Antonio for what Tim is making and they could take the next couple rings.

I've always had a tremendous amount of respect for Dirk, and this just adds to it. The guy just gets it.

I don't think the Spurs still have 10m cap room available to offer him. Dude would only get half the amount Duncan earns in San Antonio, and money is probably the last thing that matters to him at this point of time when he's already earned more than 180m from the Mavs career-wise. Dude wants respect and he'll be happy as long as he still earns more than anybody in Dallas (in which case a 10m/yr contract would suffice, knowing that the Mavs won't sign anyone earning more than that figure). But if he chooses to leave Dallas, all those respect (even the respect from fans of other teams like the Spurs) would be gone and his legend would be spoiled.

Dirk is a Maverick for life. Ring chasing is not in his DNA.

I've always liked Dirk. Glad he got a ring. He should retire a Mav. He's the face of that franchise.

I like dirk as a player but I don't think he would be anything more significant than a current Paul Pierce if he moved elsewhere. The Mavs are built around him, so if he struggles in Dallas there's no reason to believe he would flourish elsewhere, tbh.

You can be sure that Dirk wouldn't give a shit if someone earns more than he does while playing in Dallas. He doesn't care about money, never did.

Evidenced by the fact that he's turned down countless endorsements and given away high end gifts from companies who are seeking him out for endorsement.
