It's also not just about being role models off the floor, but also role models on the floor, as well..Lebron and Durant are team-oriented players, it's something the NBA has needed from it's superstar players since the 80s(guys like Duncan, Garnett and Dirk fit the unselfish criteria, obviously, but none of them were popular enough to be considered)..

The 90s gave us the Dad Killer version of stardom, a ball-hog that put himself above the team..it led to selfish ball from future players like Kobe, Iverson, Carmelo, etc..
