View Full Version : The Clleveland Browns

While the Browns had their day way back when with Otto Graham and a little later with Jim Brown they have never been in a Superbowl. For he last 50 years or so they have pretty much sucked.

Back in the day they had a tailback named Bobby Mitchell who was a great running back, a sprint/hurdle champion out of the Big10. He was the perfect fit for big Jim Brown, the first geat thunder & lightnin' duo. They traded Bobby Mitchell to make room for Heisman winner Ernie Davis. Mitchell was a better back than Davis. (Davis died of Lukemia, he never played in the NFL). Mitchell ended up at Washington and became a HOF receiver.

Anyway....

Now they are acting stupid once again, you do not draft Johnny Manzeil to be a back up. He is the last guy you want sitting the bench, he will not accept that role and it is going to cause problems. He is a leader, he is not a bench sitter. THEN, to have a stupid owner tell the guy to be cool and accept a back up role, are you kidding me? Why in the fuck did you draft him?

He just might start but you don't play silly games over it, he was told he's the back up. You draft a guy like him to be your starter and he knows that. You also don't draft a guy with his personaity and then try to change him, that only comes with maturity.

they told him he'd have to beat out Hoyer, which he probably could and will. they just didn't declare him starter yet. the previous starter is starter by default at the moment. i wouldn't make too much of it

Non-issue. If Manziel is the best QB on the roster he will play sooner or later. Everything else is commentary.

Yeah, I don't mind them making Manziel "earn" the starting spot. The competition will be better off for him. He had to do the same thing his freshman year at A&M. Showers had been the projected starter and Manziel finally won the job.

I hope he does well, but the fact of the matter is that he is an arrogant douche that is likely going to get abused by defenses at the NFL level.

Not even close. He was picked late in the first round, where most actual NFL experts expected (and many had him falling into the second behind Carr and Bridgewater). The non-sports media sure hyped him up, but real sports experts knew he was just okay.

A real bust would be Ryan Leaf and RG3, and the jury is still out on Luck, Winston and Mariota among others.

Wrong as usual.

The biggest bust ever.

During the tenure of former player Matt Millen as President and CEO of the Detroit Lions (http://www.cheatsheet.com/sports/6-nfl-teams-that-have-choked-away-the-most-wins-in-nfl-history.html/) in the 2000s, there were many bad drafts. But one that sticks out in most peoples’ minds occurred in 2003, when the team picked Michigan State wide receiver Charles Rogers second overall.

Expectations were high after he won the Biletnikoff Award for being the country’s best WR. Sports writers even compared him to future Hall of Famers like Randy Moss. But in his first two seasons, Rogers broke his collarbone twice and only played six games. In 2005, the league suspended him following his third violation of the NFL’s drug policy. This led to his eventual outright release.

Imagine defenses geared to stop one guy and that guy still averaged over 5 yards a carry.

Jim Brown was 6-2 230 pounds with 4.5 speed in the 60's. Back then we still had white cornerbacks and d linemen at 240.

Only Don Hutson compares to Jim Brown when it comes to dominating an era.

From Marion Motley to Jim Brown to Leroy Kelly.

Ohio State had a slim speedy RB named Paul Warfield, he was also a 26-2 long jumper who competed for the USA vs Russia. He....slithered....with ball in hand. He looked like a WR. Well as a Brown, yep....WR.

Nobody made it look as effortless as this guy, in a word....smooth. Yep, Hall of Fame.

Paul Dryden Warfield was born in Warren, Ohio (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Warren,_Ohio). His father, Dryden Warfield, was a deacon in a Baptist (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Baptist) church.[1] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note--1) Warfield attended Warren G. Harding High School (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Warren_G._Harding_High_School) in Warren, where he was a star running back (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Running_back) and defensive back (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Defensive_back) for the Panthers. He scored 92 points as a junior in 1958,[2] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-2) a campaign highlighted by a 6–0 victory over powerhouse Massillon Washington High School (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Massillon_Washington_High_School).[3] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-3) The following season, as a senior he scored 93 points, including all three of his team's touchdowns in the final game of the season.[4] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-4) As a basketball player he was noted for his speed, often leading fast breaks (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Fast_break).[5] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-5) He also ran track and field (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Track_and_field) at Warren G. Harding, and was the state broad jump (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Broad_jump) champion in 1957.[6] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-6) He set state records in the broad jump, 100-yard dash (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/100-yard_dash), and 180-yard hurdles (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Hurdles).[7] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-7)

How many teams had a HOF to be QB/RB/WR all there together?

The Browns did with Otto Graham/Marion Motley/Dante Levelli

Hmmmm?

Terry Bradshaw/Franco Harris/John Stallworth & Lynn Swann
Bob Griese/Larry Csonka/Paul Warfield
Troy Aikman/Emmitt Smith/Michael Irvin
Jim Kelly/Thurman Thomas/Andre Reed

The Rams had a fantastic offense in the 50's with Norm Van Brocklin/Bob Waterfield at QB, Tom Fears/Crazy Legs Hirsh at WR and the first two big black power backs on the same team in Tank Younger***/Deacon Towler. Van Brocklin and both receivers in the HOF.

*** first Grambling player in pro football

My Niners had a HOF to be QB in Y.A.Tittle and three RB's Joe "Jet" Perry***, John Henry Johnson (big seasons a Steeler), Hugh "King" McElhenny.

*** first black to have a 1000 yard season. First player to have consecutive 1000 yard seasons. Still...the only player in NFL history to have a 1000 yard season who only played JC ball***

*** Cookie Gilchrist the first AFLer to have a 1000 yard season went straight from HS to the CFL, then the AFL.

The Browns once had an Olympic decathlon gold medal winner at RB, who?

How can you forget Unitas, Moore, and Berry?

I was just talking about that trio, and they had a HOF TE in John Mackey. The only team to have a HOFer at QB/RB/WR/TE all there together.

That Chargers gang of Dan Fouts, Chuxk Muncie, Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, John Jefferson (then Wes Chandler) pretty special. Fouts, Winslow and Joiner in the HOF.

Another Charger gang of QB Tobin Rote, FB Keith Lincoln, RB Paul Lowe, WR Lance Alworth deserve mention. Alworth the first AFLer in the HOF.

Early on Jim Brown a FB had the speedy Bobby Mitchell at RB. After Mitchell was traded who took over at RB, no not Leroy Kelly, he took over after Brown was gone. Well?

Who was the QB of those teams with Brown?

Translation...talk to me about dem blues

Cheetoh "John" Mills got his start singing during lunch in the penitentiary. He was convicted of killing his mom's husband but John always claimed he was innocent.
He protested by not eating his slop but instead would stand on a table and belt out blues songs he wrote himself. He was shot by a guard in his second day in the pen.
No recordings exist of this legend.

How did Cheetoh get the nickname "John"

now you're asking the right questions...I've got books and books on these things but you won't find everything in a book...some of it...ya just have to know

when he was younger...in his teens, Cheetoh had stomach problems (probably due to a combination of bad diet and lead in the water).
He couldn't eat a meal without having to go to the bathroom 10 minutes later. One day, he was pooping on the toilet down at the gas station and he noticed
a poem written on the stall wall. When he left, the gas pumper said, "see ya later John". And it stuck with him ever since.

Always get a kick out of know nothings in with a know it all. How they act is funny.

My home library is full of books on the black experience, yep, from Africa to Mississippi to Chicago. Them old blues coupled with the trials and tribulations of blacks in a white world, very interesting.

Big Ben Stevenson played football for Tuskegee Institute, his size speed (9.8) combo rare for his era. Why not Google this legend, actually learn something.

Howard Drew was the fav to win the 1916 Olympics, but an injury ruined that, it would have been the first black 100m Oly gold medalist. He was the first "Worlds Fastest Human" and the first black to hold a sprint WR at 9.6. Google this all time great, learn something.

Freezone recorded but one song...Indian Squaw Blues....in 1928, nobody knows his real name or how he was recorded and only one song..? A blues mystery.

The books of Richard Wright, Raph Ellison, James Baldwin a must read. The music of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Ma Rainey, Robert Johnson, Gus Cannon Jug Band, a must listen. The sprinting of Bullet Bob Hayes, Tommie Smith and the runs of Gale Sayers, Barry Sanders a must see (youtube).\

You really do need to get out of under trying to be funny and actually learn things, being a know nothing clown, not a good look.

His real name was James Sherrill. He had a bulldog named Peanut. His neighbor who lived about a mile down an Alabama dirt road stold Peanut. When James found this out he was pissed but a bit relieved because he thought Peanut was dead. So he goes to get Peanut back, the neighbor swore Peanut had kiiled his prize rooster so he wanted 20 dollars for damages. And if he didn't get it he's keeping peanut, a kidnapping....sorta. Well James pays the ransom and gets Peanut back.

This team, even at 1-31, has more actual NFL players than most if not all of the 4-12/5-11 editions of the Browns (probably not saying much, but still.) How about you define "it"

You simply can't do it can you? Gotta try everything ya can to get off...ok ok I was wrong.

Dude, I saw "it" before he ever took a snap at Georgia and talked about it.

I knew all about his HS expliots and what a great RB looks like. He was a can't miss.

An...."it"...is a RB with that size/speed/vision/quicks combo, a guy who breaks arm tackles and can go the distance. A total package which he obviously is.

Blake you were 100% wrong why not be a man and simply admit it.

Right now there is a frosh at Auburn named Anthony Schwartz, he played WR/DB in HS. He is the fastest footballer in the world, yep, faster than Tyreek Hill. Now he might suck but you are now aware of him. I follow this stuff guy.

100m PR 10.15, Hill 10.19

Being an immature pest if you happen to see this kid in an Auburn game and he drops a pass...."he dropped a pass he sucks". Dude, grow up, ok?

Baker is/was clearly the best option of the 5 quarterbacks. Allen and Jackson can't hit an open receiver. Rosen doesn't know how to lead or exude any confidence in others at all. Plus one hit and he's back on IR. Sam Darnold is the definition of a loser to me. He doesn't know how to carry a franchise and always seems to wilt when he's forced to. He crumbled at USC when he was expected to lead them to the CFP and contend for a Heisman. He crumbles in the NFL when he is basically the team and misses open throws or makes some really stupid decisions. The Jets looked like the quit last week and say what you want about Baker, but he won't allow anyone to quit on him. My main gripe Darnold is that right now he's a rhythm quarterback who doesn't know how to deal with adversity. When things go well then he plays well, but the moment things don't go his way, he can't right the ship.

Jim Brown was actually a FB, and back then they used a FB and a halfback. Now Brown had a few halfbacks like Bobby Mitchell (actually a better runner just not as powerful) Ernie Green. But.....who was Browns backup?

Mitchell averaged over 5 yards a carry. He was a Big10 100 and hurdles champion while at Illinois. The second greatest Thunder & Lightnin' combo.

Browns are 4-6-1 and trending up. Back-to-back wins for the first time since 2014, a road win for the first time since 2015. They're turning into a legit NFL team right in front of our eyes.

You think they are going to stick with Crazy Gregg in the offseason?

Hue didn't do himself any favors with that swing on the talk-show circuit and then immediately going back to Cincinnati. I was glad to see him on the opposite sideline, though.

I wasn't impressed with Hue's account on Skip and Shannon. Also worth a watch.
