Expect a dogfight tonight.

EVAY
05-21-2014, 07:52 AM
Some things I think we have to watch out for tonight:

The Thunder will come out more aggressively on defense. I believe that this will make them foul more (they are not that accustomed to filling in for Ibaka's absence and have grown used to him backstopping any defensive errors they make). The question is whether or not they will get CALLED for those additional fouls. Because I'd bet dollars to donuts that they are coming.

If Adams goes in, Baynes should go in at the same time. Even if Baynes is NOT as good as our other bigs, we need to counterbalance the physicality of Adams, who will, in the absence of an enforcer on our end, continue to hurt our players with impunity (a la Diaw in the last game - even on replay the announcers never admitted that it should have been called for a foul).

Tony will, I fear, show more of the impact of the hammy strain tonight because he has only had one day to recover from the last game. So I hope that he will get the ball to the other shooters as often as he did in the first game.

I expect Durant to be far more aggressive offensively EARLY in the game than he was in the last game, mostly because I expect him to respond to the lack of scoring by his teammates by taking on more of the scoring himself, and mindful of how tired he got in the last game, to do it before he gets so tired.

I expect Brooks to use the Adams/Collison frontcourt more this game than he did last game, and when he does, we need to have our best three point shooters in the game to pull the Thunder defense out of the paint so Timmy can work again.

I expect Sefalosha to spend more time on Tony than he did in game 1, and I hope that means that Danny (or whoever is in the two spot) to go off on Westbrook.

I think we have to realize that we are unlikely to shoot as well as we did the other night for the entire game tonight. And it is unlikely that the Thunder bigs are quite as inept at scoring as they were in that first game.

Unfortunately, I think we have to prepare ourselves for Kerr and Miller to suck up to the Thunder again and again in an attempt to make this a more interesting game.

I hope that we win tonight.

GSG!!

Expect Sefalosha and Collison to try and score points after being lambasted by the media for failing to score. I'd expect to see Collison especially active on offensive rebounds and putbacks.

Well said, and good takes.

The only thing I could see NOT happening is the Adams/Collison duo spending more on the floor. First of all because I don't think Brooks is ready to sit Perkins in such an obvious manner. OKC management has shown they can be very stubborn (almost as much as the Spurs :) ) when it comes to some players getting minutes or starting or not (Exhibit A: Harden, James). Second, because Adams doesn't play well alongside Perkins, and the Spurs tend to abuse Collison. Which really creates a tough situation for Brooks. And coming back to my first point, he isn't ready to play Adams along one of his remaining, unproven bigs. Even if that's the solution, he'll probably pull a Pop on this one and stick to "veterans".

Will be a tough game as OKC does not want to go down 0-2. This is not 2012 and without Ibaka and Harden they are just not as strong a team to hope for a backdoor sweep or winning 4/5 from SAS.. Danger tonight is if Jackson, Fisher or other role players get hot. Zebras going to hurt Spurs tonight but they can prevail.

So, what is your shorthand version of the above?

There's worse referee crews out there.

The 205+ O/U I think it's interesting. Apparently Mauer, Corbin and Garretson have been involved in low scoring games more than high scoring games, which you could read as letting players get away with more on defense. That could be good and bad, depending how you want to read it. (less OKC freebies but letting them get away with more on D). As usual, if the Spurs can get the ball into the basket, the ref crew shouldn't matter.

Well, agreed. Any crew that sports Tony Brothers is worse than any others, imo. But I do think that Mauer can be a strong influence on the other two. I just never know how he's gonna go. Last game I did think that Danny Crawford was a good influence on the other two. Didn't agree with him all the time but truly felt that he didn't have an agenda, and that is really about all I can hope for these days.

I wouldn't put too much weight into those numbers. These playoffs have been pretty wonky when it comes to home vs. road success. Road teams have been having lots of success throughout the playoffs, and I wouldn't say that's due to officiating. Just one of those years.

Wizards were 5-1 on the road in the playoffs
Pacers are 5-1 on the road
OKC is 4-2 on the road

IIRC, the home/road records are almost equal in these playoffs. In the first round, the road teams were actually over .500.

Just saw on ESPN that Durant is saying that he (Durant) is going to have to be much more aggressive on defense. Since he is not that accustomed to doing it, I predict that he will foul a lot. What is a question mark is how many fouls he will get called for.

I also predict that Perkins will go after at least one of the Spurs tonight. Maybe more.

Apparently, some little bird (and another 10,000 analysts) let it slip that the Thunder were playing without Serge Ibaka. The Spurs apparently heard the news as they set the tone in Game 1 by thrashing Oklahoma City in the paint with a staggering 66 points that more than doubled up their up-front production (32). The Thunder were able to stay alive for stretches by long range efforts from Durant, Westbrook, and Fisher, but were never really able to find a way to stop the Spurs offensive machine.

For Scott Brooks, he has a game plan that needs scrapping, without a lot of plan Cs, Ds, or Fs. The Thunder had their most effective stretch in the third quarter of Game 1 going big, but that same look got picked apart in the first half. Their small ball lineups leave gaping holes on defense that the entire team is accustomed to Ibaka covering up. Expect a few curveballs from the Thunder lineups, as well as for the defensive switches to start to come.

The Spurs main priority is to stay focused. They've done nothing but take care of business so far, and they need only to look to Indiana to see how quickly tides can change. Come out with the same intensity, focus, and execute.

Remember 2012.

FTT.

Stephen A. Smith says OKC should go Small in order to try and beat the Spurs tonight....

Asked if OKC wins tonight? He simply replied "NO".

Im not sure if I agree with him about OKC going small, I think that would be bad for OKC, TBH.

His prediction is agreeable though.

I personally think they have to go small in order to have any shot. Over the long haul, IMO, that is the hardest line up for SA to match up with. If Ibaka was playing it would be the no brainer line up IMO. So losing him, they shouldn't go away from their best other 4 because of that.

Many think they should go big, which is the other option, but I personally think the that gives the Spurs an even bigger margin for error offensively even if going big might work a little better defensively for OKC.

Yup, staying big would force OKC to either a) take out Fish b) Not have Sef to guard Manu/TP. Their best lineup IMO is a small ball lineup w/ Collison at the 5. He's their best big on offense and their best PnR defender.

Their best way to defend SA right now is to dare Tim to beat them in the post or w/ a midrange jumper. Two things I'm not sure Duncan can do over the course of a game, let alone a series.

EVAY
05-21-2014, 06:45 PM
OKC will start the game with their big line-up and switching on everything, just like Dallas did, and like they did last night for a bit in the third quarter.

If we can sort out the switching against them faster and better than we did against Dallas, I think the series is settled. But they are still longer and more athletic than Dallas, and I expect the switching to give us turnover problems which will lead to transition baskets for OKC.

In other words, I expect to me a much more difficult game than the first one. I hope that we win it, though. I think we really need to get into their heads.

And Baynes needs to counter Adams whenever they use him.

NASpurs
05-21-2014, 06:48 PM
Even if Westbrook and Durant averaged 30 points each, they would still need 40-45 points combined from everyone else to win a game in this series because no way in hell they're going to hold the Spurs under 100. If Fisher wasn't doing Fisher things against the Spurs, game one would have been truly ugly.

I think OKC's potential success in going to small depends on the foul status of Leonard. If Kawhi is in trouble, it would be hard for the Spurs to handle the Thunder's small-ball. It wouldn't be just because Leonard is the best Durant defender in the league, but also that it would take Danny out of his free-safety role and force Pop to play Mills/Beli extended minutes even if they are getting picked apart on D (more of a concern for Marco right now). A similar thing is true if Duncan gets in trouble, since the Spurs wouldn't have two low-post options (three counting Leonard) to disrupt Durant.

While I agree, I don't remember them going small w/ Collison tho. If they do, I'd imagine the Spurs to look for Tim more in the post considering he's their best PnR big defender and weakest low post defender.

yeah id be lost without my dvr, reg season im dodging spoilers and watching games the night after they happen, FF thru all the commercials/halftime and you can watch a game in like and hr and a half.
