Field chants and hollers and gospel were the roots to what we'd hear later on record. Keep in mind there were no "recorded" blues until the 20th century, with Mamie Smith's "Crazy Blues" in 1920 considered the first blues tune, it's not but close.

In the very beginning it was female singers backed by bands, that went on from 1920-1924. In 1924 we started seeing the men finally getting into it. Papa Charley Jackson a banjo player from Louisiana, Daddy Stovepipe out of Alabama and Ed Andrewa a Georgia guitar player the first men to record. Sylvester Weaver recorded in 1923 (from Kentucky) but it was just a guitar solo and a piece with Sara Martin. In 1926 Texan Blind Lemon Jefferson showed up, he would become the first male "star" of them blues. but a notch below the great Bessie Smith. Jefferson a "country blues" artist, Smith more of a "classic" performer.

While the "Missisippi Delta" gets a lot of play the blues ddn't originate there. But, no state rivals Mississippi in the quality/quamtity of notable blues singers that would come later.

Robert Johnsdon didn't record until 1936 and a lot of what he did was mimic the songs he'd heard, adding his own slant on things. He was a fantastic guitar player (freaky fingers) and had a tortured vocal sound. During his short lfe (dead ny 28) he was nothing special. It wasn't until decades later that his music was re-discovered and the rest is history.

Bill Wymans (yep, a Rolling Stone) "Blues Odyssey" book on the subject is as good as it gets. An amazing read full of pictures and maps and everything someone new to the music would need. I'm sure its at Amazon or some where out there.
