Spurs won games 1 and 2 at home and got destroyed in games 3 and 4 on the road. This is back during 2-3-2 format, so they had to play game 5 on the road. You know the rest of the story, we get saved by Horry and win in OT.

Of course, all similarities end there. The Pistons were a more balanced team, but they did have a crazy shot blocker and more talented bigs. Spurs ran a lot of ISO 4-down to Tim, instead of the motion read and react offense they run now.

But, I can recall thinking the Spurs were in deep shit after game 4, but they found a way to win.

I watched that Game 5 at one point last summer and was struck by just how physical and intense that game was. That was some big boy basketball. There was no place to run and no place to hide that night in Detroit.

The Spurs had to muster some sort of physicality and nastiness to match what the Pistons had thrown at them in the previous 2 games. You could tell that both coaches understood that they were really down to just playing their 6 best guys while giving a few minutes to the 7th on each roster. Of the 10 players who started that game, 9 played at least 41 minutes (and 8 played at least 44 minutes). Horry and Barry got the only significant minutes off the Spurs bench and Hunter and McDyess were the only guys to play off the Pistons' bench.

True. Although we gotta give TD credit for even having the mobility he has now (based on his age and knees). The guy has really lost alot of weight to keep up in today's game. He looks really slim now compared to the 03'-07' days. It's weird to see those DVD's now because he looks so much heavier then compared to how he looks now.

2003 the Spurs owned the Lakers in the regular season 4-0. Plus the Spurs haven't had a game stolen from them by the refs this series like they did Game 4 in Staples.
