There has been tumult and speculation surrounding Kyrie Irving and his impending contract extension for quite some time, but that could be done soon, as the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports (http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ssf/2014/06/terrys_talkin_about_johnny_man.html) that the team intends to offer its point guard a full five-year max contract.
Once July 1 hits and teams are allowed to offer contract extensions, the Cavaliers are expected to present Irving with a deal in the five-year, $90 million range, or the maximum allowed under the collective-bargaining agreement. The team will do so without any concessions, according to the Plain Dealer.

Smart move even if he is overrated. Again I just cannot see paying anyone that kind of money outside LeBron, Durant, and MAYBE unibrow and Blake Griffin. But I guess Cavs have to overpay to keep him. Nice core of assets but I don't think they fit really need a good trade. If last year 's number one improves either he or Thompson need to go.

I'm not enamored with Kyrie by any means, but they really had to at least make the offer.

Irving is my nigga and he's already a top3 PG in the league but 5yr, 90m still looks too much for him tbh. It's extremely hard for teams to sign big name FAs under the new CBA which in another way means it's easier for teams to keep their star players, they don't really need to pay him that much to keep his service in Cleveland imho.

Interesting article on whether or not to offer a max extension to Irving:

Good move...those kind of teams have to pay more to keep the star players.
As long as he doesnt come to the west.

lol making allstar team and winning allstar mvp he can start his negotiation at 130% instead of 125%

nba fck up by allowing a popularity award to increase a persons pay,

all nba/ defense teams i have no problem, its the popularity contest to make the allstar roster, let alone the ballhogs for the AS MVP

that's retarded and everyone who defends the move is retarded as well. Irving could become a rfa.

Should have waited it out and do a sign and trade on him, straight out trade him, or give him a $13 to $15M a year contract and see how he pans out.

He's not worth the max, he still has serious weaknesses in his game, he can't defend, he over dribbles, and he is at least rumoured to be a locker room cancer and diva.

Cavs are overpaying, but they can't really afford to let another superstar walk out the door for nothing. They are not likely to compete for a title anytime soon, need to show the fan base that they are at least trying.

Maybe he should do like Duncan and take a 50% pay cut just to lose in the finals.

I'm sure at the very least, Duncan would have power to pick a coach. :lol Mamba power

Everybody knows I hate Irving's game, for the reasons ambchang mentioned, but the Cavs don't really have a choice in this matter, it's an easy decision, tbh..

The Cavs don't have the luxury of over-analyzing and going a different route, even if it's potentially the correct move, and probable that signing Irving to a long-term contract will limit their ceiling to a 2nd/3rd round team(in the East)..the Cavs have to take into consideration that they need to keep their fanbase happy and they can't afford to face the media scrutiny..

- They have been terrible since Lebron left

- They have blown most of their lottery picks: Thompson's ceiling is a good 3rd big, Bennett is a huge bust and Waiters can't get along with their best player, on and off the court

- They just missed the playoffs in one of the worst conferences in NBA history

A team with that type of recent history can't afford to face the scrutiny of allowing their best player to leave, tbh..

I bet you they're going to lose Deng... wouldn't surprise me if they re-hire Mike Brown by March...

I agree with you on the reasons why they have to make this move, but it's precisely why they are a bad franchise. They can't do what is right for them because they are operating in fear and is thinking short term. They need a culture change. They need to have a management team that is confident in its decisions and can face the media and crowds.

Golden states did it with the Ellis for bought deal. While bogut has been oft injured, that was absolutely the right deal despite the crowd hating it. The GSW aren't winning a championship yet, but they now have enormous fan support and has earned their respect.
