Mavericks Sign Armstrong
15th August, 2005 - 5:48 pm
Dallas Morning News - Darrell Armstrong will return to the Dallas Mavericks after signing a one-year contract under the veteran’s exception. Armstrong, 37, gives the Mavericks a third point guard to complement Jason Terry and Devin Harris. The signing also apparently closes the door on a possible Dallas return for Nick Van Exel.

After being acquired from New Orleans in December, Armstrong averaged 2.3 points and 2.2 assists in 52 games. His top moment as a Maverick was a 4-for-4 shooting performance in Game 7 of the first-round playoff series against Houston.

“He had a lot of choices,” agent Glen Schwartzman said. “The Mavericks and the coaching staff know they can look to him, and he can contribute with his play and leadership. He felt this was the best situation to try to compete and win a championship."

Oh well. Didn't sign for much, apparently.

I didn't want Armstrong. Last year he couldn't hit a shot to save his life. His NBA career is pretty much over. He was too old last year, this year I expect him to not see much playing time.

It still gives the Spurs a chance to sign NVE

Sure, but doesn't Houston have more of their MLE left?

Dallas looks like a team on the decline to me. They will finally get their payroll under control in 06/07 once Van Horn's stinker of a contract runs out ($15.7 million this year), assuming they waive Finley. But the nucleus of the team is gutted and how stupid does letting Nash go look now!?!

Why the sad face Solid D?

Armstrong is weak. Wake up.

Because he can still play and if there was ever a "Spur" out there who wasn't yet a Spur...it was Darrell. He's good people and he can still defend. The Spurs don't need a 3rd PG who is a scorer. They need someone who can come in and defend and provide floor leadership, bust traps, make the right decisions. See Game 7 against Houston. He shut down a hot Mike James.

I've moved on though. Thanks for the concern. I thought you were gonna play ball tonight (?) What gives?

Signing armstrong would have been as bad as signing Kukoc.

Right. I can just see Kukoc taking the young guys under his wing and teaching them the nuances of the game and how to handle adversity. :lol

No, you see, the Spurs must have an All-Star at the end of the bench.
