Jane Fonda to Oppose Iraq War on Bus Tour

Jane Fonda to oppose Iraq war on bus tour
SANTA FE (AP) — Actress and activist Jane Fonda says she intends to take a cross-country bus tour to call for an end to U.S. military operations in Iraq.

Fonda incited controversy in July 1972 when she was photographed sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun.

"I can't go into any detail except to say that it's going to be pretty exciting," she said.

Fonda said her anti-war tour in March will use a bus that runs on "vegetable oil." She will be joined by families of Iraq war veterans and her daughter.

They plan to return to the Santa Fe area, where she was promoting her book, My Life So Far on Saturday.

Prompted by a question from the audience, Fonda said war veterans that she has met on a nationwide book tour have encouraged her to break her silence on the Iraq war.

"I've decided I'm coming out," she said.

Hundreds of people in the audience cheered loudly when Fonda announced her intentions to join the anti-Iraq war movement.

"I have not taken a stand on any war since Vietnam," she said. "I carry a lot of baggage from that."

Fonda incited controversy in July 1972 when she was photographed sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun while on a tour of the country to drum up support to end the war.

There have been plenty of people who accused me of romanticizing the Vietnamese. Well, yes. They were easy to romanticize during the war, as they battled the mighty U.S. military power. The David and Goliath legend hasn't survived the centuries for nothing. Do you know anyone who roots for Goliath (except maybe those who want something from him)? It's the Davids who touch our hearts." - Jane Fonda

"The GRU and KGB helped fund just about every antiwar movement and organization in America and abroad... What will be a great surprise to the American people is that GRU and KGB had a larger budget for antiwar propaganda in the United States than it did for economic and military support to the Vietnamese." - Russian defector Staanislov Lunev in 'Through the Eyes of the Enemy'(page 78).

The term "useful idiots" has been attributed to Lenin, as a description of those mindless people in the Western democracies who would always find ways to excuse whatever the Soviet Union did.

Quote Usama Bin Laden:

I ask the American people to force their government to give up anti-Muslim policies. The American people had risen against their government's war in Vietnam. They must do the same today.

I think America has some of those.

I don't think I hear to much about Jane Fonda, with the exception of the right. I guess they made her something of a postergirl for anti-americanism. I could give a shit.

Larry Northern, 59, of McLennan County, was charged Tuesday with Criminal Mischief Over $1,500 and under $20,000 after a pickup truck tore through a row of white crosses erected by anti-war protesters gathered near the President’s ranch in Crawford.

Bail was set at $3,000.

Shouldn't he also be charged with desecrating the American flag?

The Limbaughs of the world are crying that Cindy has 'an agenda'. Whatever that means.

What about the Schiavos? They didn't have an agenda? Of course not, they were grieving parents.

The Congress voted 'save terry' law in the middle of a night. Frist diagnosed her by just seeing her on TV. Bush signed the 'save terry' law. Delay threatened the judges involved in the case. But make no mistake about it - none of these people had an agenda.

The person that has an agenda is Cindy - a grieving mother that lost her son in a war based on lies. And all she wants is 5 minutes with the person who is most responsible for starting the war and who's on vacation for 5 weeks. I tell you - this woman has an agenda.

A stupid question as thread topic, how about this one:

Will kids of Repug administration and Repug operatives/paymasters go fight in Iraq?

Apparently, you’re not the only one asking that question Bouton:

<snip>

If Mr. Bush were willing to do something he has refused to do so far - speak plainly and honestly to the American people about this war - he might be able to explain why U.S. troops should continue with an effort that is, in large part at least, benefiting Iraqi factions that are murderous, corrupt and terminally hostile to women. If by some chance he could make that case, the next appropriate step would be to ask all Americans to do their part for the war effort.

College kids in the U.S. are playing video games and looking forward to frat parties while their less fortunate peers are rattling around like moving targets in Baghdad and Mosul, trying to dodge improvised explosive devices and rocket-propelled grenades.

There is something very, very wrong with this picture.

If the war in Iraq is worth fighting - if it's a noble venture, as the hawks insist it is - then it's worth fighting with the children of the privileged classes. They should be added to the combat mix. If it's not worth their blood, then we should bring the other troops home.

If Mr. Bush's war in Iraq is worth dying for, then the children of the privileged should be doing some of the dying.

More evidence that those who do want to reinstate Selective Service simply choose the more PC stance of "Why don't rich kids have to fight?"

And these are the same people who tried to scare people out of voting for W by claiming a Draft was imminent.

There is absolutely no truth that these people joined the service because it was their last stance of employment. Why don't they relocate? They're going to anyway if they join the service. Time and time again you hear that " I wanted to defend my country". Be it a democrat or republican, it is admirable. All Boutons can do is stand in the background and shout..."why don't rich kids join?"

Ummm, no. Nobody want's to see a draft, but the fact remains that for the first time ever the Army will miss it's yearly recruitment goal, and this is despite lowering their standards to where even Whott could get in if he wanted too.

What we are really talking about here is the 51% of the country who stood behind the President on Nov 2nd not backing up their votes with action. There were millions of people who supported W and the war. There should be no recruitment problems, but there is.
