Hernandez (2-1), making his third major-league start since being called up from Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 4, lowered his ERA to 0.86 -- two earned runs in 21 innings. He had a career-high 11 strikeouts and walked one, baffling the Royals with a 98 mph fastball, a devastating curveball and a changeup.

The M's just need to get a couple more quality pitchers and they will be back in the thick of it next season.
