View Full Version : Melo to Spurs? Thoughts?

If Carmelo opts out of his contract, and when the Spurs win their 5th championship, how would you feel about him coming to the Spurs?

I know he doesn't play much defense... I know that's a big strike against him... But I think he could fit right in...

Splitter, Duncan, Carmelo, Kawhi, and Parker... That sounds like a nice starting line-up...

Wouldn't have the space to get him this year even if we wanted him, and he would be a horrible fit in the Spurs offence. A ball stopper and a sieve on the defensive end, I can't think of a less Spurs player in the league.

Depends on the deal. He'd be a fine player to have post-Duncan if the Spurs could keep their current core (minus Duncan) together. If the team would have to gut its roster to sign him, no. Melo will only reach his potential if he can play in a box. The Spurs' culture, roster and coaching staff is one only a few boxes strong enough.

My thought process is that Pop is Pop, and can (I think) corral any player into playing in his system...

But then again, Melo is very... Anti-Spurs...

Pop will not stay around to guide Melo. He doesn't want the headache at this point in his career. He'd rather go get trashed with Tim in his wine cellar and reminisce about the good times.

I think the "Melo is an ant-Spur" argument is overblown. I think he's an anti-Diaw for sure. He's not inclined to pass rather than score. But he's had stretches where he's played point-forward very well. Like Boris, Melo has the ability to control a game through the low-post. Unlike Boris, Melo can beat post of his defenders off the dribble and is an accomplished midrange shooter. He's also a talented defender when he wants to be, especially against PF, which means he can play the four legitimately like Diaw and not just situationally like Durant.

Melo's problem is really that he has a ton of bad habits, and he falls into those when he's not fully engaged and bought-in to the system. You shouldn't have to constantly coddle/coach up your star to keep his head in the game, but if there's a coach that can do that, it's Pop. The issue would be how Anthony responds to such coaching. I think it'd be fine for the Spurs, as Melo would not only respect what Pop is telling him, but he would also know that doing so could legitimately mean he'd get a ring. It should work for Carlisle, Thibs and Spo as well. I doubt it would work for McHale, though.

In short, I wouldn't try to build a team around Anthony, but I think he'd be an asset if he could land on an already-made title team that just needs a dominant scorer.

One thing about love as a Spur, he has to expect not to stat pad like he's done with the wolves. He may not be cool with that idea.

Hopefully winning a championship can get some players to rethink SA as a free agent destination. The irony is that some players won't want to come here because they feel it won't be a challenge.

No way. I'd rather have Lebron. I hate a lot of things about the guy, but I gotta admit, he's an amazing talent. A starting 5 of TP, Green, Kawhi, Lebron and Splitter would be scary on both ends of the court. BUT, we all know that's not gonna happen.

No! No! No! Least desirable player on my short list! Melo is all about him and not about team! I feel we bring everybody back and add a reliable wing player to play behind Leonard. Let's win tomorrow, enjoy it, and then discuss things when the end of June arrives.

I'd prefer we keep the starting lineup as is. Only change I would like this offseason is to find a legitimate backup SF, Ariza would be ideal but I highly doubt that happens. Now if Timmy retires (which he probably won't), then of course Spurs need to do something.

the chatter I'm hearing is that LeBron is the one most likely to take a paycut because he makes so much more money outside of the NBA, it's Wade and Bosh that "need" everything they can get from the Heat

Hey while we're at it can we get Kobe and Dwight Howard to opt out and come to San Antonio also? Maybe James Harden? I don't understand the obsession with ball dominant manufactured stars here.
