When he nailed that pull-up three in the first half I knew the kid was dialed in and had all the confidence in the world. He has to get a bigger role next year. He's more than capable of putting up 16-18, 7-8 boards and a few assists on this team along with great defense.

did he just get a max extension

I think they'll sit down and talk to him this summer. Extending him actually puts a bite on any 2015 cap room. His extension salary would be MUCH higher than his rookie QO cap hold figure. They would have the right to match any offers in 2015, so there's little risk for the Spurs to wait.

My favourite play from Kawhi tonight - on the fast break, he could have done a euro-step to the hoop but he dished it to last second to the left wing Manu for 3. Kawhi has become such an intelligent basketball player.

An athletic beast like him could easily look around and say 'wtf you guys talking about big 3? all I see is a bunch of old guys. I'm the shit man' and instead he took whatever role was asked of him. Even in games scoring 20+ he took only 10 shots and made the most of them.

That is extremely impressive for a 22 year old. Considering guys like LeBron doing camera shows at age 22 or guys holding up circles around their eyes after 3's made or Caron Butler a 35 year old calling telephones, this dude does none of that.

After winning the Finals MVP, Kawhi goes into a group hug with all of his teammates and away from the cameras. Contrast that to LeBron last year even though it was clear he had gotten a little bit lucky to win the title doing the arms out smirk around his face 'look at me.. yeaaaahhhh i'm the dawg man'.

This boy is special. People are going to want to play with him throughout his career here in San Antonio. He's not going to have to leave and chase and stat pad or go after awards.

Thanks Kawhi. You deserved Finals MVP. We should all be so happy we have him.

Perhaps I said it wrong. What I meant is, Kawhi makes the system work. When he's out, it's extremely difficult to make-up for his combination of scoring, defense, contests, and rebounding. The Spurs look like the 2010 squad when that happens.

The Spurs have a system, and it's beautiful, but Kawhi's emergence is what makes it championship-worthy.

The spurs defenitely needed one of the medium 3 to step out of the shadows a bit in order to win the series and that he did. But he needed the system and the other 5 guys who were damn near mvp's themselves too. Imho.

I think he loves it here, Finals MVP, him and Pop seem to have grown close, this will only take everyone's relationship further. I think he wants to win and be here, he realizes this is the best place for him to be, and hopefully he'll sign a reasonable contract.

The fact that he brought us here with that Westbrook block.. shows how much this man means to us winning and to us as a team. He truly deserved it. Such an efficiency player as well. Props to Kawhi.

Pop is a liar though. He said they never called a play for him, when I can clearly remember them running one in game 5. It was out of a timeout, and they ran that wheel/lob/dunk play for him that they have used since Sean Elliott was playing.

So proud of Kawhi. So humble, so unscathed. His proclamation, "I'm so proud to be a member of this team right now". Will stick as a bi-line for his entire career. There's not much more than you can say than Tim Duncan gushing over a 22 year old player winning the Bill Russell MVP award. Congrats to Boris Diaw, Patty Mills, Cory Joseph, Tiago Splitter, Danny Green, Jeff Pendergraph, Marco Belinelli, Aron Baynes, Austin Daye on your first NBA title!

Kawhi deserved it, but guys like Boris and Tim as well .. even Tony was in the mix had he not missed every shot in the first three quarters of game 5. I think Leonard was chosen for marketing reasons as well, as the NBA (rightfully) sees potential in him.

Marketing is a good stuff, I haven't problem with it, but Leonard led in scoring and rebounding the Spurs the last three Finals games.
Pretty impressive and amazing, he deserves recognition for that and the MVP.

You always have to look at the big picture IMHO.
Leonard getting the FMVP trophy was fantastic, almost ironic in that he is probably the quietest shyest player in the NBA, yet it could have gone to Diaw, or Manu, or even Patty, or TD.
Too bad it didn't go to the WHOLE team because it took all of them as never before to get the job done.
Same as it almost did last year.

And when they really needed a stop they went to Manu, too...right? Leonard was the best player on both ends, he led in scoring and rebounding the Spurs in the Finals.
You're saying Manu was the guy who was putting on a defensive clinic against Wade, who made Lebron work on both ends, who was rebounding like a beast, who was scoring efficiently...
Damn I love how Manu regained his game and confidence this season and played so well in playoffs but when I read people like you, who underestimates the effort and awesome job of other Spurs players like Leonard (obviously the fans can discuss about importance, relevance, but say was ridiculous to give Kawhi FMVP...), people who thinks nobody in this team deserves nothing except Manu, I begin to understand the Manu-haters not because of Manu, just because his pathetic fans.

TBH I'm getting a little tired of the stupid things about if Leonard deserves the recognition or he has a mental disorder, tired about Tony/Manu/Kawhi/Pop/FO haters...Why we can't celebrate the fifth, the amazing Spurs basketball of the season, the cultural diversity of this team which represents the cultural diversity of the city, and just be happy for the team and this kid...

The feels I feel today about Kawhi is exactly the same kind of feeling I had about Manu when I was 12 fucking years old...

:cry

Manu, Timmy, Tony, Kawhi, Bruce...My favorite players of All time.

:cry

When you look at Manu, you see he is so happy for Leonard. Just makes me smile....

It's been an incredible run man, I'm somehow at ease now that we're the Champs, i put so much time into this team since Kawhi came, and after their Game 7 lost last year i feel just as happy as the players now that they redeem themselves. The Spurs are a part of my life . I've been a fan since 2002 but never been so entwined as i have before.
