I'm getting my first new car in the next couple of months. I'm considering either a Lexus IS300 or an Infiniti G35 Coupe. Anyone have an opinion on either or any other recommendations? I'm looking to spend no more than $40,000.

I test drove the G35 sedan 6-speed. I really liked it and it's quick and sounds pretty cool. My lease on my car isn't up until March, so I'm not in the new market really right now, but it would be a car I'd consider.

I've driven both. It really depends on what you are in it for. If you want a better driving experience based on car handling, speed, etc etc, I'd definetly go with the G35. If you are in it for more of a luxury ride and smoothness as well as extras, I would go with the Lexus.
Personally, I'd never choose a Lexus over the G36 6 speed.

My favorite car for the longest has been the LEXUS IS 300 but i got to admit the drive is better in the G35 ive spent extensive periods in both vehicles, they are both great cars and i would want either one.
I dont know if you've seen the newer models of the IS that have come out...i like that one even more so if you didnt already know the IS is getting a change in body.

The rx-8's do have rotary engines. But you should just go ahead and get one of those giant diesel trucks, like the one that kutcher drives. Don't worry about the gas, the prices will go down.

I'm pretty sure Nissan Skylines are called Nissan Skylines in the USA. I know the R32, R33 and R34 were, I'm not sure about the new redesigned ones because they haven't hit the shores of Australia yet so I know nothing about them, but why would they change the name away from the famous Skyline name just for the USA?

They're aren't any "new" Skylines in the USA, they're actually relabeled as Nissan Z or Infiniti G35, I'd be looking into a Nissan Z if it wasn't a 2 seater.

Well.
If your looking for safety go for the Lexus.
It's the only type/brand of car that my husband's ever fixed that comes "blood-free" after an accident... and I doubt it's becasue 100% of Lexus drivers use their seatbelts 100% of the time.
(BTW- the vehicles with the most blood stains inside after and accident are navigators and tahoes)

If you can go about 14K more, you need to get the Infiniti M35. We drove it this weekend and it is by far the best car that I ever drove, period. It handles like it is on rails, the looks are awesome and the technology is mind boggling. We are getting one this month. The black outside with the bourbon and black interior is beautiful.
Here is Consumer Reports' latest update:
Infiniti M35 rated 'Best luxury sedan'
Consumer Reports magazine calls the sporty car from Nissan a "surprise."
August 9, 2005: 12:26 PM EDT
DETROIT (Reuters) - The sporty Infiniti M35 powered past its competitors to become what Consumer Reports, a leading source of information for U.S. car buyers, says is the best luxury sedan on the road today.
The "excellent" overall rating for the car from the luxury division of Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. is reported in the September issue of the magazine, which goes on sale Tuesday.
The Infiniti M35 was tested against four other models and each, as equipped, was priced at roughly $50,000. The other models were the redesigned Audi A6, the Cadillac STS, Acura RL and Lexus GS300.
"The surprise of this test group is the M35, which is now our top-rated (luxury) sedan. It even outscores all of our tested full-size premium luxury sedans," Consumer Reports says.
"This well-rounded car has a ride and handling suited for twisty roads as well as the boulevard," it adds, saying the car's many attributes include a powerful 280-horsepower V-6 engine, a roomy, well-finished interior and controls that are mostly user-friendly.
A 335-horsepower, V-8 power plant is an available option on the M35.
The A6 from Audi, a unit of Volkswagen AG, also got an "excellent" overall score from Consumer Reports. But it was faulted for "nonintuitive controls," its lack of an in-dash CD slot and unknown reliability. The previous A6 was not reliable, according to Consumer Reports.
Of the five vehicles tested, Consumer Reports said all but the Cadillac STS, from General Motors Corp., and the Audi A6 warranted inclusion on its closely watched "recommended" list.
Consumer Reports said the reliability of the STS, which replaces Cadillac's Seville sedan, was still unknown. It praised many aspects of the car, but said the material quality of its interior was "not as luxurious as the leaders in the class."
The Infiniti M35 replaces the Lexus LS430 -- which sells for about $70,000 -- as Consumer Reports' top-rated luxury sedan.
The magazine said the GS300, from Toyota Motor Corp.'s luxury division, was refined and expected to be quite reliable. But it added that the car's steering lacks feel, passenger room is tight, and it is not an agile vehicle.
"It's not the luxury sport sedan Lexus pitches; we didn't find it particularly exciting to drive," Consumer Reports said.
Of the Acura RL, the latest offering from the luxury arm of Honda Motor Co. Ltd., the magazine complained that it was not particularly sporty to drive. It also said the RL was no roomier than the Acura TL, which costs about $16,000 less.

Well, if you do not plan on having a need for ever taking a 3rd or 4th person with you, then the Vette is a nice car.
The Technology package in the M is freaking awesome. All you have to do is tell the car to do stuff with your voice command and it does it.
ie. You ask it where nearest restaurant is, and it lists all of them, then you say which one, and it tells you how to get there. I have the Navi in my car, but you have to enter it by hand. You can also tell it whick Sat channel to go to, or what radio channel to go to, etc. You can enter phone numbers in there and tell it to dial so and so. It has 4 computers, so if one or 2 fail, the others all back it up, so you never have to worry about a malfunction.
Also it has a DVD in ceiling so in back seat you can watch it. There are 2 sets of head phones with it. You have airconditioning and heat that comes thru the seats, and the rear seats recline. You could take a babe out on a date, park, get in the back seat and you have your own personal movie theater(without popcorn though) :)
Go check it out.

Bullshit about the A6. I have a 2.7T and have had nothing major wrong with it and it's 5 years old. I test drove the new A6 4.2 and it's awesome and may be my next car. We're on our 4th Audi we love them so. Audi gets no respect. You'd think after winning Le Mans for the past 7 years, they would.
The only thing I didn't like about the M35 is their dash.. It's too funky. But no way does it replaces the Lexus LS430 like the article stated. My dad used to have one and there is no comparison. But I know you're wife will enjoy it. It really is a beautiful car.

No way, PT Cruiser or Scion(box on wheels). No need to worry about getting kicked out, at $50k, my new car would end up only being close to 1/2 of what my house cost, is that good?
If not for the ridiculous gas prices, I'd be looking at getting the Corvette for that kind of money.

I remember hearing some advice on house/car buying before. Something like, you can only afford a car that is priced lower than what you make in a year and a house priced at what you make in 3 years, I know I don't have the number of years right, anyone heard this before?

it all depends on your income.
well as an example..
my sister in law who manages a wells fargo financial branch , was approved for a 185k loan with 3 points @ 6.75%.. she turned it down and waited the 6 months until lher car was paid off... the she was able to get a 220k loan with 0 points at 5.89%.
it worked out pretty good for her and thats the recommendation she makes ot all her clients. Unless they are just about jonesing for a loan and then she gives it to them casue thatss her bread and butter.

That's a VERY good point. It probably has more to do with what the lender will approve your payment for, but a good one nonetheless.
If you can afford such a fancy car, you should probably get a 15 year mortgage instead, especially if this is a small starter home you are likely to sell in the future. This will give you more equity and keep you from having to come up with a huge down payment for your next house (when you sell your small one).

Your house pmt shouldn't excede 25% of monthly income.
I think lenders will lend up to 28%.
Car pmt should be much less than that.
Total service of debt (all pmts) should be less than 35% of monthly income as a general guideline.
Of course, not everyone has monthly income, so adjust for the lean times as well.

Shelly, Lexus is a luxury sedan, it is great for middled aged women or older men, that is cool. Infiniti is a performance sedan like the 5 series BMW, it is made for tight handling and acceleration, but also has everything that the Lexus has as far as comfort and whistles and bells. Danyo is a young guy and guys like cars that can turn on a dime, excellerate through a curve without losing any traction and just kick ass. I have driven Lexus out my ass, I owned the SC300 for 4 years, and traded it in for my Infiniti. My I35 Infiniti blew it away in handling and acceleration. The M out performs my I35 and out performs any Lexus my miles.
I am sure the Audi A6 is nice too, but Consumer Reports says it is not as nice as the M, and from what I have seen, they are right.

I think you would like the TL, very reliable, roomy and 270HP.
Too bad the BMW M3 is too high in price otherwise that would be my choice hands down.
All my frinds that have BMWs like them, but they are high maintainence and seem to have to go get things fixed all the time...that turns me off.
Danyo, Scion has 3 cars, not just the Box, the sports coupe is pretty cool and only cost about 20K. It is a Toyota so it will last forever without breaking down, it is very reliable. As I said it is very popular with the college babes too.
The PT convertable will get you laid too. :spin

not really into BMW's either.
I know about Scion, I just assumed you meant the "box". The coupe just looks to much like a Kia to me, I'm probably the only one that thinks that though.
The PT will get me laid?!?! Everytime I turn the key!?!? :lol

well as an example..
my sister in law who manages a wells fargo financial branch , was approved for a 185k loan with 3 points @ 6.75%.. she turned it down and waited the 6 months until lher car was paid off... the she was able to get a 220k loan with 0 points at 5.89%.
it worked out pretty good for her and thats the recommendation she makes ot all her clients. Unless they are just about jonesing for a loan and then she gives it to them casue thatss her bread and butter.

I'd just be happy with a car that the A/C works right. :depressed

Jimbo, I think CR is talking about the the A6 3.2 engine. I'm talking about the 4.2 engine. Big difference in performance, plus you can get the S-line package which is different suspension, etc.
But it all comes down to a matter of perference. They're both beautiful cars, IMO.

and traded it in for my Infiniti. My I35 Infiniti blew it away in handling and acceleration.
Oh shit... Jim and I drive almost the same car. I have the last year I30t before they switched to the new 3.5 liter engine. It was the last year Infiniti had a touring version - I wound up with a stiffer suspension, bigger tires, slightly different gear ratio, etc. The I35 was actually out when I bout mine, but after driving them both, I liked the I30t a little better.
But that new 3.5 V6 you have in yours is sweet, Jim. No doubt about it. Same basic engine in the G35, M35, and a bunch of Nissans too, just tuned differently as appropriate for the model. I love it in the 2005 G35. They finally refined the interior so it doesn't look so much like something out of 2001: A Space Odyssey. And that car is so fucking fun to drive...

My Bro inlaw has the I30 and he loves it. My I 35 is black with tan leather and chrome wheels, so I love the looks of it as well. Infiniti has gone away from the front wheel drive like our cars, and you can really see the difference betw the handling now.

You sold the Porche?
They're aren't any "new" Skylines in the USA, they're actually relabeled as Nissan Z or Infiniti G35, I'd be looking into a Nissan Z if it wasn't a 2 seater.
Hmm, Nissan Z's are actually a completely different car to the latest Skylines. Similar engines, but different cars. It's actually a Nissan 350Z which is the latest in the the long line of Z series cars such as 300ZX, 280 ZX etc. They have nothing to do with Skylines as far as I know.
Perhaps the new Skylines are rebadged as Infiniti in the USA, if that is the case there is NO WAY I would spend $50K US on one, NO WAY. Personally I'd much rather find an R34 GT-R Skyline, a 98 Twin Turbo Toyota Supra or an 98 Twin Turbo Lexus Soarer. I don't know what they go for in the States, but you can find a bombed out Supra or Soarer from those years for around $30K AUS and a GTR for about $70K AUS. You would have shitloads of money to spend customising your car with better paint, interior, sound system, rims, tyres, exhausts, kits and everything under the sun. I have friends that have gone out and bought GTO's for $60K and my car looks better than them, is faster than them, has better sounds than them for like 25% of the price.

the Infiniti G35 is the Nissan Skyline overseas, stateside the 350Z is based on the same platform as the G35, kinda like the Camaro and TransAm or the Cavalier and Sunfire.
