A group of us are going out to dinner on Saturday night.

I need suggestions for Mexican restaurants, medium price range, that stay open until at least 11pm.

Thanks.

Kori, if you've never eaten there, try El Jarro at 281/Bitters (Same side of 281 as Hooter's and EZ's). I grew up across 281 from there and it's my all time favorite.

Is that the one that's kind of pricy and has weird shit on the menu? :lol

If it's the same one I'm thinking of, the only kind of King Kong nachos on the menu probably have capers on them. :vomit :lol

ChaCha's on Bandera inside the loop. Great food and the best margaritas in town. Ask for the "waiters sauce"...it's the "special" salsa they keep in the back...you just have to know they have it...

damn it! there is this great place that we go to on Blanco inside loop 410 a few blocks south of Oblate on the right side of the road in a very nice looking oraneish/tanish stucco building.

I can't remeber the name!!!! :bang :bang

but it has "Vallarta" in the name somewhere...

anyway, they have AWESOME :tu :tu food and are very reasonable priced.
tortills are made fresh all day and the charro beans are home-made style heavenly with the chiccarones still in them! (yum yum)

the #32 on the menu is the best deal @ only $7 a person it's a faijita grill dinner with beef (tender) chicken (flavorful) and shrimp (lots and lots of it).
But it comes with lots and lots of food so if 3 people are gonna eat then just order for 2 and if 4 people are going to eat the njust order for 3.
they also serve beer and are open pretty late. (although we ususally go for an early dinner)

When I lived in SA that was one of my favorite places. They have the best salsa ever followed by the best shrimp fajitas. Back in the day they used to start you off with a free quesadilla, in the good ole days. Also they have shrimp enchilada plate in a creamy white wine sauce thats killer I've made quite a few trips from Corpus just for that dish alone. Damn I'm hungry now and Corpus has shitty mexican food believe it or not.

That is the place, then....El Jarro de Arturo. I went once and it was hard to get placed, even with a reservation.

And you definitely don't get anything gratis there anymore.

No, I'm the anti-snob. I looked at the menu and I was like, "WTF? This isn't mexican food! I feel like I'm at one of those seated dinners at a hotel where the gourmet meal consists of fish eyeballs and 3 peas and some weird-assed potato combination...at $30 a head."

Seriously, though...it was really good, but from what I remember it was about $15 and up a plate and it was super-crowded.

You might want to try Jacala on West Avenue between I-10 and Frederickburg. I think they close after 11 or 12 on Saturday. Good food and decent atmosphere and bar.

La Fogata is pretty damn good food and it's not too bad on the patio on a cool night. The inside is ok.

At El Jarro, which has a great atmosphere (make reservations), they have a live band on weekends but not loud to the point that you can't have a conversation at a normal volume with the people at your table. Yes the menu does stray from standard mexican (the last time I was there I had something like beef medallions in a chipotle/wine cream sauce and garlic mashed potatoes) but if you stare at the menu really hard, they have a "hidden" section where they have the regular mexican food at almost regular prices ($6-$10).

Cha-Cha's on Bandera is small. The atmosphere is ok but the food is great. The last time I went, they had karaoke but the same four people kept going up and I don't want to be mean but the quality of their singing was slightly more pleasant than fingernails dragged across a chalkboard.

Rosario's is the hip spot to go, especially if they have a salsa band playing. It's always been a see-and-be-seen type of place but I haven't been there in a while. The advantage there is that you can wander over to Azuca to listen to live Latin music or if Rosario's seems a bit too highbrow (it's not), you can always wander down to Bar America to drink $1.25 beer among fellow degenerates .That's a joke because I like the place but its filled with younger people who will eventually be the 50 and 60 year olds that will still go down to the neighborhood ice house (that could be good or bad).

Yes, it's the same ownership. I considered La Hacienda and called them, but they don't take reservations. And for 10-12 people, I don't want to stand around and wait without reservations.

Ninfa's

Have you ever been to the original one in Houston between 3rd and 5th Ward? I used to eat there all the time back when I lived out there. They have the best flour tortillas I've ever had, the salsa's outstanding, and enchiladas were always dope there... the neighborhood looked like a freaking ghost-town though, and the street was like 10x worse than West Ave. used to be by Jacala, but it was always packed.

----------------------------------

For anyone in LA you gotta try El Tepeyac Cafe on Evergreen in East LA (near the intersection of Soto and Cesar Chavez). No alcohol :(, but their enchiladas are incredible (they have the best enchilada sauce I've ever tasted), and their burritos are even better (and I hate burritos with the exception of this place). Plates are like $6-$11, and your food is out like right after the order is placed it seems (probably because the place is very small, but very packed also). They have this one burrito for like $6.35 called the Hollenbeck (name of the neighborhood police district) that's stuffed with carnitas, salsa verde, guacamole, rice, and beans and is huge. I can't finish it in one sitting, which shocks me since I used to eat family orders fom Bob's Smokehouse on Rigsby like it was nothing when I was in SA. It's gotta be at least a couple of pounds. Plus, you know the restaraunt's good when all the regular customers are huge (thank god it's on the other side of town from me). A lot of the people working there have been there for like 20-30 years too, which means you won't see too many hottie waitresses but you do get service with lots of pride in the place.

siesta in victoria for enchiladas

Ventura's in victoria for Tamales and everything else

Uhm. I worked at Siesta in Victoria.... and uhm. you don't want to eat those enchiladas. well maybe on Monday becasue thats the day they make them - for the whole week!
they make sheets and sheets of them on monday and then leave them out all day every day from open to close under a heat lamp. they only see refrigeration form 1030pm to 9am. It's sick.
And Bobby ( the owner. he's big into the school board and other city olitics like restoring the old court house) He's this super supoer fat ass hole that sweats buckets and he'll graze his sweaty fat ass thru the kitchen plopping his chubby fingers inthe mole, the gucamole, wahtever's handy and then lick his finger and then stick it in some other food item .

But your right about Venturas. OMG! those tamales are the fucking bomb!!

I really miss Guerra's for breakfast tacos. damn I'm drooling.

Piedras Negras is also great.

I used to like Jacala's, but I had a very bad experience there one time and the management was so full of shit. I took my mom there a bit after she had surgery, and the waiter spilled tea right on the spot she had an incision. She was soaked, and the most they offered to compensate us was give us 2 free teas. I was amazed that they were going to treat repeat customers like that, so I've never been back and that was quite some time ago.

For beef fajitas, its Chachos all the way. For fajitas overall in general, Taco Tote is a definite go. They need to hurry up and start opening more of them like they're going to do. Man, chicken fajitas on homemade corn tortilla!!!! MMMMMMMMM. By the way, has anyone tried that new mexican restaurant on 281 called "El Matador"? God, I wish they would've left it Do Brazilla. Anyway, they offer all this buy one, get one dinner free stuff. They must not be doing good with all those specials, in fact every time I pass by for work, the place is empty. I don't know.

There's another place I like to go to called Tacomiendo on the corner of Culver and Inglewood. Carnitas and cabeza aren't that good there, but the carne asada is excellent. For just tacos my favorites are Campos on Venice and Western and Tacos el Gavilon on South Central and Jefferson I think. None of them comes close to El Tepeyac though.

If you want to try a piece of San Antonio history try Mario's on Fredricksburg Rd. just outside of 410. Great menu and atmosphere but you might want to call and see if there are mariachi's playing or not the night you want to go.

He passed away some years ago. From the 60's to the late 80's his old restaurant used to be located where UTSA is now. The food at the old and nrew restaurant is way better than the junk you get at the Cortez family restaurants (Mi Tierra, La Margarita, Pico de Gallo). Although their mole is pretty good.

Mario was a trouble maker..............:eyebrows

well its authentic up here in michigan, so yea. its very good.

LAWLS. I've been to Mexican restaurants in MI. All of them were a joke. They call breakfast tacos - "morning burritos". And they put french fries on their salad like the crazies in Philly. They were even advertising Jalapeno Poppers with the catchline -Catch a buzz with our delicious Jalapeno Poppers! They release endorphins in your head...etc etc...Absolutely ridiculous.

I grew up with Mexican Manhattan and Los Barrios. Probably the two best Mexican restaurants in San Antonio. The chalupas at Mexican Manhattan are the greatest ever and NEVER order 2 unless you are famished.

Ah finally! Someone else mentioned Mexican Manhattan! I love that place. I actually reccomended it for tonight, but they closed too early. Their patio is never crowded even though it's on the river.

Los Barrios has still been good the last 2 times I've gone, but I still prefer MM. The fajitas tonight were supper good, however. MM has beans and rice that remind me of my grandmothers cooking, though. And that is definetly a good thing.
