Warriors add Thompson to Love talks

Updated: June 19, 2014, 3:44 PM ET

The Golden State Warriors (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/gs/golden-state-warriors) have greatly increased their chances of acquiring All-Star forward Kevin Love (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/3449/kevin-love) by making sharpshooting swingman Klay Thompson (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/6475/klay-thompson) available to the Minnesota Timberwolves (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/min/minnesota-timberwolves) in trade talks, according to sources close to the situation.
Sources told ESPN.com that Golden State, after initially resisting Minnesota's desire to land Thompson in a Love deal, has relented and is now willing to package Steph Curry (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/3975/stephen-curry)'s trusted backcourt mate along with David Lee (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/2772/david-lee) and first-round pick in a trade for Love that could materialize quickly with the 2014 NBA draft looming Thursday.

Thompson's father Mychal, himself a former No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft and now a radio analyst on Los Angeles Lakers (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/lal/los-angeles-lakers) broadcasts, said Thursday on ESPN LA 710 AM that the Warriors and Wolves are discussing a deal in which Golden State would also receive Kevin Martin (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/2394/kevin-martin) from Minnesota in addition to Love.
The teams are still in the process of exchanging various trade proposals that would put other players into the deal, sources said. ESPN's Chris Broussard reports that one scenario being discussed is the Wolves acquiring Thompson and Lee for Love, Martin, J.J. Barea (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/3055/jj-barea) and Minnesota's 13th pick.
It remains to be seen whether the Chicago Bulls (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/chi/chicago-bulls) will continue to chase Love as hard as Golden State has -- which would likely cost them the prized likes of Jimmy Butler (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/6430/jimmy-butler) and Taj Gibson (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/3986/taj-gibson) -- or focus their efforts on trying to sign or trade for Carmelo Anthony (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/1975/carmelo-anthony), who has until Monday to decide whether to opt in or out of the final season on his current New York Knicks (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/ny/new-york-knicks) contract valued at $23.3 million.
As ESPN.com reported last month, Golden State and Chicago are two destinations at the top of Love's list in potential trades, which is an avenue Minnesota has been forced to explore after Love's representatives made it clear to Wolves management that Love would exercise his right to become a free agent in July 2015 and refuse any attempts by the Wolves to re-sign him.
The Boston Celtics (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/bos/boston-celtics), Phoenix Suns (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/phx/phoenix-suns) and Denver Nuggets (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/den/denver-nuggets) are also among the teams making a determined trade push to acquire Love, sources said, but Golden State's ability to furnish Minnesota with multiple quality players that are ready to produce right away is believed to hold great appeal to Timberwolves president of basketball Flip Saunders, who earlier this month added coaching duties to his plate.
The most attractive element of the offers from Boston and Phoenix, sources say, is the prospect of acquiring multiple first-round picks in next week's draft. The Nuggets can offer the likes of forwards Kenneth Faried (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/6433/kenneth-faried) and Wilson Chandler (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/3194/wilson-chandler) along with the No. 11 pick next wek, but Golden State is uniquely position to send a former All-Star forward to Minnesota in Lee as well as one of the game's most feared perimeter marskmen in Thompson./p
The Wolves are resigned to dealing Love between now and next February's trade deadline, but many rival executives believe that the Wolves are grudgingly now prepared to move Kevin Garnett (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/261/kevin-garnett)'s successor as face of the franchise sooner rather than later to try to get as much for Love as they possibly can.
Information from ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard was used in this report.

Interesting. Doubt Klay wants to stay in Minny long-term, even though his dad was a superstar at the University of Minny.

Nobody wants to be in Minny, that place is a cesspool

Can the Wolves make an extension for Thompson a condition of the deal, or is Thompson not eligible for one yet?

He can sign an extension at any time between July 10th and October 31st.

Thanks. That means that the extension probably won't be part of the deal because it would have to happen after draft night.

At least not officially.

Thompson/Barnes/Lee for Love/K-Mart is a no brainer for the Dubs tbh, especially if Klay agrees to a max S&T.

Thompson is a slightly richer man's Danny Green (though not as good as defensively tbh) that's like more 3x the money. Lee is on the downside and Barnes is coming off a really bad 2nd year......

It would be hilarious to see Minnesota give a max deal to Thompson. They're only in this predicament right now because they refused to give the 5th year, and the possible 30% of the salary cap, to Love when he was eligible for his rookie contract extension.

KHAAAAAAAANNNNNN!!!!!!!!

Shame for Lakerfan that Khan is not around. They could have probably put a package together for Love centered around Farmar/Kendall marshall/Nash and maybe even give them Wes Johnson back :lol

That's correct, but they may want to remove any possibility that the best asset that they get in return for Love leaves after one season.

Mostly, I'm just laughing at the Minnesota franchise.

and what's even more hilarious is that Flip Saunders will be dipping his helmet into the toilet bowl that is Minny next season.

thompson is not that good IMO, especially if you have curry. Just to keep a gay name like the splash brothers around is a pretty poor excuse to hang on to him tbh.

I don't really think it moves the needle for either team, really. So long as the Warriors rely on Curry to be one their stars, they can't win the West. Steph's way too easy to shut down, and he really doesn't force enough mismatches to make his teammates better. I like Iggy as a complimentary player, but he's a weak third member of a Big Three. Martin's okay, I guess, but his poor defense and declining offensive game means the two-guard position would get a sizable downgrade. I don't think Bogut/Love is a good front-court combo, but hey, I guess it's not the worst one out there. All in all, I think GS would still be fighting Portland and Houston for king of the third tier unless they end up drafting some awesome player at 13.

Who cares about Minnesota? I think they'd be about the same, too. Thompson can do more with ball than Martin can, so he'd be a better compliment to Rubio. Lee can put up empty stats with the best of them, so they Wolves probably wouldn't lose much there. It would be a shame as well for them to trade 13 along with the best player in the deal. I just can't see them making the playoffs with their roster. They may as well trade Pek while their at it. I think he'd have a pretty strong market.

Curry
Iggy
Barnes
Love
Bogut

That is a good enough starting 5 to compete for 2nd place in the West

lol kerr has loss all credibility with this move goes ahead...

trading for a guy who posts empty stats when he had a stacked team yet couldnt even qualify for playoffs...dude is a fkn joke only interested in padding stats to get that max contract

klay should be happy with this move, wont have to live dollar by dollar like a cheap kent, wolves owner is one of the wankers in the league who love to overspend on scrubs

The biggest problems for the Warriors last season were the bench and coaching they need to fix both of those to be a legitimate contender imo
