There's no major tourney next summer.

That was my initial reaction. Manu could be an 18-20 minute guy in the regular season. Really need to bring back Patty.

I donīt think this would affect the Spurs as much (unless a big injury happens). Manu said he has changed his diet since last year, so there is that, also and more importantly the Spurs can rest him during the season without losing too much. I think this is something he talked with Pop before he made the decision.

Letīs hope he remains healthy

Ghjkll
06-20-2014, 10:49 AM
Iīm from Argentina and I canīt believe it...He really likes to play for our country, but being realistic, there is no chance we can win the Worlds even if he somehow manages to play like 2005 again...Iīm still in shock, the Spurs deserved a try for a repeat and magical storybook ending a la David Robinson. I guess that he will skip all b2b and play like 50 or 60 games this year and a maximum of 20 minutes to keep him fresh.

No shit he's "earned the right to do that." He can do whatever the fuck he wants, but some options clearly show that he cares more about his national team than he does the Spurs team and this is one of them. He's an old, decrepit shitbag who's extremely prone to injury and by playing for the national team he's ensured that we won't even have a chance at the title next year. i don't like any of our stars over 30 playing international ball in the summer, at least not a lot of minutes. as far as bobo, i don't mind him playing. he's big boned and has a history of getting lazy and coming in training camp out of shape. the summer ball keeps him in shape and he doesn't play as many minutes as tony so i don't worry about him breaking down from fatigue during the season.

IMHO..... in all seriousness now... the guy just won a ring and is about to retire. He wants to play one last time with his national team, which has been a big contributor to his career success and him being able to become a spur. Not a big deal. On top of that that great argy generation is pretty much done, they wont play that many games anyway.

It's very disappointing. I think this summer's World Championship should be pretty open, with only USA and Spain as big-time contenders, but still I believe Argentina is too old to get really far.

However, it's Manu's choice. He loves playing for this country and with his old teammates, even if every year there are fewer of them.

About the money, do you really believe these things aren't discussed when contracts are signed? That would be a bit naive, if you ask me. After all, he has been a relatively cheap player during his career for a reason (this season as well).

Yikes. There goes any chance of a repeat. Duncan should just announce his retirement now. Better to go off on top instead of finishing your career in a second round exit.

A healthy, rested Manu was vital to winning the title this year(carried the team in the first round, conference finals). Tired Manu(2013) was horrible and looked like a liability most of the time.

This basically means Spurs have to make a HUGE move in FA for an impact player on the bench. Someone that can take over when Manu's going all 2013 on us. We saw Marco choke hard in the playoffs - he'll never be that guy that can takeover a playoff game. With TOSB Manu and that choker Marco, our bench is going to take a huge hit next year - we're going to need someone that can help them out.

From mysanantonio.com: "He has said he doesn’t believe that his strong campaign resulted from having last summer off after wearing down the previous season following the 2012 Olympics. Ginobili also suffered a major ankle injury at the 2008 Olympics, after which he played just 44 games during the regular season."

Yeah, definitely no correlation between rest and performance for an NBA player in his late 30's.

I'd like to see Pop just say "You're resting for 2-3 months no matter what. If you're playing in FIBA, we'll see you in January." 3+ months of the reg season is plenty of time for Manu to get integrated, and they can do without him for the first 1/3 of the season. Easily.

SIT HIM OUT FOR A COUPLE MONTHS!!

Seriously doubt that. Maradona, Messi, Agüero. Three off the top of my head. Add any player from their soccer team and it's more than likely he's more popular than Manu.

Aguero is not more popular than Manu.

Agree on Maradona and Messi, though..

didn't you hear? Manu is irrelevant to the Spurs championship aspirations :lol

I love Kawhi but he wasn't more important than Manu in this playoff run. Even at 37, Manu's one of the most impactful players in the NBA. A healthy Manu gives you a legit chance at title contention. When Tony went AWOL against the Mavs and Thunder, Manu was there to pick us up.

Everybody was important... I think Manu will be ok as long as there's no injuries... he has a new plan for taking care of himself, which worked well last offseason, and I doubt it's going to change this summer, regardless if he's with the NT or not...

I would've preferred he didn't play due to the injury risk... but I can't see him logging that many minutes in what's potentially 5-6 games max...

Told you all who were "b-b-but Manu resigned from NT". He'll play in it until his legs can endure it.

TBH Spurs should offer him an extension to 2016 and double his salary just for the lolz in here.

He won't be carrying the offensive load for NT, he will be used for stretches. FIBA games are 40 minutes and most he will play is 12-15 games between warm-ups and a very deep (and unlikely) run by Argentina.

The only positive I can see of this is that Pop and Co. know that Mills and Diaw are coming back. B/c last year, both Pop and RC told him not to play in the FIBA Americas tourney.

If both come back, it won't be that big of a deal. The Spurs are very deep and can do without Manu for most of the regular season. But that depends on both Mills and Diaw returning, which all signs point to them returning at this point. Remember Pop called Mills the next 6th man for the Spurs last year.

It might not be what any of us want but we have to respect his decision and support our family.

Manu's decision to play kinda changes what the team needs this off-season. Before, it seemed obvious that we should go after a backup SF and another reliable big. But if we're going to see 2013 Manu out there, we might need another playmaker on the bench.

Truth be told, Argentina have a cakewalk group (easiest of the 4) and wouldn't have to face France or Spain until the Quarters or Semifinals. As long as he plays like he did this past season, mostly passing and 3 pointers, he should be fine. But no more Old Manu El Contusion play.

That's why the Spurs brought in Belinelli. He is Ginobili insurance. He's definitely going to play a larger role next season. New players usually have a bump their second year with the Spurs and I want to see Chicago playoffs Belinelli instead of sitting on the bench Belinelli.

No, not really. People forget Beli did great last year and will only be better next year. So what the Spurs lost the majority of their games against playoff opponents early on, they still got the best record and won the Championship.

Spurs can defer to Diaw to do most of the playmaking off the bench. Like I said before the playoffs started, this year the Spurs weren't solely depended on Manu's bench play like they were in '13 playoffs. Spurs do need him, but they aren't entirely depended on him like last year.

I think Spurs fans should know by now Ginobili only has an on-off mode. There is no in between. When he steps on that court, he'll give it his all and that means playing his reckless style.

As i said in another thread i am ok either way.
Pop has discovered this year a formula to revive a player that has been playing all summer (Parker). Give him a month off and let him get back to competition slowly, the Spurs wonīt need much from him on the RS and Belinelli showed that even if he canīt stay on court in the PO heīs great for the regular season and keeping Manu fresh. So no trouble there.
I say that Pop will manage Ginobili situation much better than other seasons, where he usually rode him early because he was more in rhythm than his teammates, making him a focal point to start the season only to latter realize that he couldnīt keep up.
I expect Pop to figure out a way to have Ginobili effective by playoff time weather if he plays this summer or not.
I hope most of you hope for me to be right.

Ginobiliīs replaccement is Belinelli and he IS on the team. And this BUM is the second best SG of his era arguably. Just because you are a society that calls itself proud of your nation but disregard international representation that doesnīt mean that Ginobili should be criticziced for what he is rightfully choosing.
Take for example Parker. Who played 3 straight years for his NT, i didnīt see people bitching around over here.
Manu has never played back to back tournaments for Argentina, he was always caution on not playing back to back summers (with the only exception being a 11 games qualification tournament argentina hosted) , so there is no reason to be shitting about everything he does.

Argentina will manage his minutes too. He'll be nothing but a glorified cheerleader to inspire his countrymen, tbh. That will be his role. I don't know why people here are losing their shit over it. He's not going to play the minutes TP played for France last year.

Pop should just sit him until December to force him to have time off. "Your season starts on Christmas, Manu." Our depth can carry us first half of the season.

But I understand why he's doing what he's doing. His country and those national team teammates mean a hell of a lot to him. I can't criticize him for that.
