View Full Version : Lakers: How inflated has Kobe's career been?

Sheriff Hoyt

Seeing how a prime Wade won with a declining Shaq who was two years older than the Shaq Kobe failed to beat Detroit with. I can't think of a more inflated/overrated career. You would have to think a prime Wade would win as many rings or more with threepeat Shaq. Prime Wade would also win with Bynum Odom and Gasol

I'd rather miss the playoffs than have to be escorted to the trophy case and forced to give one back. And if you had your druthers you'd choose the former as well.

Duncan winning 5 doesnt extinguish Kobe's greatness. It just solidifies Duncan's legacy even more. Outside this forum, just about everyone realizes of the thousands and thousands of players in the last 20 years, Kobe and Duncan are the greatest. Also, just about every forum has also stated Lebron got exposed and still has a long way to catch up to even Kobe before he can surpass Jordan.

This sums up how I feel about Kobe. I never feared Kobe whenever the Spurs played the Lakers but I did fear Shaq, Gasol-Bynum-Odom. The spurs owned Kobe in the regular season from '04-'07 before the Gasol trade. During that 3 year period the Lakers were easy to beat you never had to worry about Kobe since he wasn't a threat just a guy who could score tons of points. With Kobe from 2011 to 2013 the Lakers became easy for the spurs to beat again despite having Kobe playing at a high level mainly due to the decline of Gasol. Kobe without the best big in the league aka Shaq or the best frontline is not a dominant player that can influence games. He is a great scorer and nothing else.

What's the purpose of getting a good lottery pick if not to reach the playoffs and eventually the Finals? Pretending that a draft pick will make you a title favorite is folly, and you have to get to the playoffs first. If the Lakers got to the Finals last year and lost, you'd probably feel better about them right now than you currently do with the 7th overall pick. Saying otherwise is lying or delusional.

its a process. making the playoffs last year absolutely does nothing for the lakers. getting a solid pick in this talent depleted roster is a good start. in 2 years they get rid of kobe's contract, cap space, young assets, you get the idea.

The truth of Kobe Bryant is that, because he was part of a team where the center was far and away the most dominant player of that era, he was able to develop his game and because the Lakers won games with Shaq, Kobe gained confidence that he was a big reason for it. He soon began to think it was his doing and that Shaq was riding his coattails. He was so in love with Michael Jordan's legacy that he tried to reincarnate Jordan himself. On any other team that would not have worked, but since the Lakers could just go to Shaq for easy buckets and Kobe could go one on one and shoot fadeaways all day with a cleanup guy pulling down 20+ rebounds a game, Kobe grew to become an assassin from midrange and could attack the basket with conviction. Many people can attack the basket with conviction, they just don't. Kobe did because he was given the freedom to do so without the repercussions of failure.

Kobe's facade got bigger than his game, and he began to isolate himself from others that he needed to be successful. He threw his teammates under the bus to the media because he thought he was untouchable by anyone, that he was the NBA. After the rape accusation he came back to Earth just a bit and even though he had a team full of HOFers, he was destroyed by a team with no all stars. Kobe's rape trial took all the limelight from the team itself. It was all about Kobe, good or bad, had to be about him else he wasn't happy. They didn't like playing together, and that showed in their game. Shaq commented that he wasn't getting touches, and if you look at the numbers from that series you see he was right, Kobe shot them out of the Finals. Phil and Shaq left shortly thereafter because Kobe was "uncoachable", the Lakers decided Kobe was their poster child and sent Shaq packing to his next ring engagement while Kobe missed the playoffs and quit on his team in another playoffs.

Having a deep seeded hatred for the Spurs and what they stood for, Kobe was especially hurt that Tim won two more rings since he'd lost in 2004, so he went on national radio and threatened to demand a trade. This again put the limelight on Kobe instead of the Spurs during their championship celebration. Once again, acting like the pissy faggot he is, Kobe showed no class and no regard for protocol. Though he cried to Stephen A Smith about the trade, it was obviously a bluff but the Lakers with the help of Jerry West stole Pau Gasol from Memphis, begged Phil back and suddenly Kobe went from 1st round fodder to making the Finals in Pau's first year. Kobe would make 3 consecutive Finals, winning two of them and getting the MVP both times because he took more shots than the rest of the starters combined, on either team, yet everyone except homer Kobe fans knows Pau Gasol should be carrying around at least one Finals MVP trophy. Doesn't matter though, Kobe has 2 Finals MVPs. He feels he deserved them and in his mind, it cemented his misguided notion that he carried Shaq. Kobe fanbois flooded forums like this one and pretended it was because of Kobe, not because of Pau, even though they were never inspired to do so before Pau Gasol, though Kobe was playing for the same team for several years prior.

Kobe was once again atop the world, 5 rings... and he's been content to let the Lakers die a slow, costly death while he infests their intestinal tract like a black tapeworm (instead of a black mamba). He nicknamed himself. How's that for self absorbed? He was once a good player, probably a great player, but he's become so jaded and self entitled and delusional over the years that he's not even on the same planet mentally as the rest of the league. He's the NBA version of Pia Zadora. In press conferences he acts like he has some secret information that says the Lakers are going to win another ring, that everything is fine and that we just don't know the real deal. You can see it in that shit eating, forced, fake ass grin he exhibits as if he's beyond reproach, unquestionable. He's certainly not a candidate for Pop's "gotten over himself" award. He compared himself with Magic and MJ when he said "you think Mike D tells me when to check into the game.. it's not his fault, Magic and Michael checked themselves in, I did it with Phil as well". Magic and Mike never raped their teams. Mike insisted Phil stayed or he would leave, Kobe threw his coach under the bus. Magic is probably the biggest reason for the memorable Lakers, and those who were around during that time remember him over Shaq and Kobe Lakers because those were the real Lakers. Mike was playing for much less than the max while he was winning 3peats™. He finally settled up, but he didn't rape his team in the process nor did he throw them under the bus.

What Kobe embodies the Spurs despise. Tim Duncan is the antithesis to Kobe Bryant. Tim actually went to college, refused to enter the draft until he graduated because he made a promise to his mother. Kobe skipped college, quit on the team that drafted him and took his mother to court over some memorabilia he didn't even know he had. Tim took over when David turned the team over to him, and did so quietly and with respect to Dave. Kobe threw his teammate under a bus after being carried to 3 consecutive titles. Tim and his coach have a lifetime relationship that is the envy of the entire league, unspoken respect and unwavering faith, one in the other. Kobe threw his coach under the bus as well. He's been through a slew of coaches, and it's always the coach's fault that Kobe cannot succeed. Tim was happy when Tony won his Finals MVP. Kobe did everything in his power to ensure Pau did not get the Finals MVP, taking 24 shots in one game and only making 6 of them. He was determined that the Finals isn't won if he cannot get the MVP. Tim plays the All Star game as an exhibition, passing the ball and basically just goofing off. Kobe got his nose broken because he wanted the MVP so badly he was never passing to anyone, he takes it seriously and Kobe fanbois cite his All Star game MVPs as evidence of his greatness. Tim is comfortable in his own skin, goes out and does his job. None of his teammates or peers talk bad about Tim. Everyone hates Kobe, especially his teammates.

That's Kobe's career. If it's inflated, he did all the blowing on his own balloon. Put a monkey in a big market and people will watch him dance.

Boiled down though... Duncan 5, TOSB Kobe 5.

Explaining my methods to you would be like Bobby Fischer explaining Be6! to Derrick Rose.

I think he did pretty well for an "inflated career" like what the Spurfans perceive. He took advantage of the opportunities that were given to him. In the end, anytime you bring home five NBA titles and two finals MVP's in your career you consider that a victory

He's the anti-thesis of Duncan but 8+2 and 3+7 are both equal to 10. They'll both be celebrated winners and Hall of Famers while the rest of us write a wall of text which will be forgotten a month from now.

You can do the math and permutations all day, but Tim has quite clearly surpassed Kobe. BTW 3 + 2 > 2 + 1.

You'd know quite well from all the trolling since 2010 and it's good to be a Tim Duncan fans these days.

You guys are idiot lol God has had a career that is so much better than Duncan. God has a legendary game in the 81 point game while Duncan has no legendary games people talk about.

It had nothing to do with your dislike, you just spewed the truth, you just recited history and did it better than anybody ever did or ever could.

Props.
