Unfortunately, bronze medal in Olympics is the only dirty spot on Pop/Duncan's impeccable resume.

The way Argentina beat America really reminded me of Spurs vs Heat 2014 (young LeBron and Wade! They would team up with Chris Bosh and lose to Greece in World Championship two years later).

It taught Pop a different way to play the game and paved the way for Pop's transition from dump-it-to-Duncan to more screens and cuts in 2005-2007, and eventually it became the titi-taka passing game of today. Pop also watched Argentina beating America in 2002 but this time he had Duncan on his team and the loss struck him much harder.

If what you say is true, then we should be happy this game happened. It inspired Pop and Duncan, aided in the evolution of NBA basketball, and culminated in championship #5, one of the most glorious titles in history.

A great player is defined by that they do in the NBA and that is all.. The Olympics is a nice little side show but not meaningful in terms of evaluating any kind of legacy.. Had Duncan won a Gold Medal it does not change it for the better either.

:lolNice try. But Duncan is a top 10 player of all time. Arguably GOAT status. Olympic basketball.:lol

At the time beating full NBA team was a big deal for the opponent and huge embrassment for the American. I have Duncan as top 5 goat but this was definitely one of the few times he couldn't carry his team to a win.

The US team that year was all isoball with AI, rookie Melo, rookie Lebron. Not even prime Duncan can overcome a shitty "all star game" system against a legit team like Argentina.

Yet, Duncan was balling in that olympics in much the same way that Lebron was balling the finals. Clearly the best player on the floor hampered by a weak supporting cast against a true team.

Which is why when I watched this I really thought it was exactly how Spurs beat Thunder/Heat this year.

I just wish Duncan went to Beijing or London and scored an Olympic gold medal. It is still one of the better awards for any athlete to represent his country. Same reason world cup soccer is considered the ultimate trophy for a soccer athlete.

so the op basically wants to give the credit to Argentina for our 2014 championship. To point out a blemish in Duncan's career. Also to say that ginobili > Duncan because of the olympics. Anything else?

Apparently Timmy disagrees with you...Keep in mind, he could have easily won gold in 2008 and 2012, but he simply chose not to participate. He doesn't like olympic basketball and chose to focus his efforts on the NBA.

Resting his body was more important to him by that point than anything else.

2004 team was one of the worst in terms of developed talent. When Marbury is your point guard, you know you're screwed. Hate to say this but Kobe rape incident screwed that team. Kobe and Duncan would have beat Argentina, though Iverson and Marbury would have kept it close with chucking.

Some of those plays are almost the same you see nowadays in the Spurs. Argentina played smallball too. No dominant center, lots of passing. Another curious thing about that team is a basketball wonder generation coming just after the argentinean volleyball wonder generation. I remember Argentina had their best volleyball team and their best volleyball player of all time, Marco Miilinkovic in the middle of the late nineties. In Brasil after the first silver medal in the volleyball, the basketball almost died. Every tall kid was playing the f**g volleyball. Argentina still managed to build the Golden generation in the basketball. Maybe it's because the volleyball didn't reached the world class level

lol at all the defensiveness faggotry in this thread.

Duncan is the greatest player of his generation, one of the best 5/10 players all-time, nobody is trying to disminish him in this thread imho.

Don't be faggots and be happy for the historic moment of the other Spurs legend featured in this thread.

P/S: Imagine if we had that Manu on this current Spurs team. I think he could have won a regular season MVP.

Hit job by the refs on Duncan tbh. He was the only decent player on that team that gave a shit, and he was in foul trouble with ticky tack fouls the entire game.

But it's the Olympics so official corruption is kinda par for the course. That US team should've still mercilessly pounded Argentina, but the rest of the team played like faggots besides Tim.

If only certain other Spurs felt this way.
