Bob Bass. Is that good enough for you? The Hornets GM at the time and former GM and coach of the Spurs. He was always willing to do the Lakers a solid starting with trading the Spurs #1 pick in the 1977 draft to the Lakers for a washed up Mack Calvin, or trading Mychal Thompson to the Lakers in 1987 who helped them win back to back titles, or as Hornet GM trading Kobe to the Lakers. We always wondered if Bass was a secretively a Laker mole.

Now I doubt Bass or any other Hornet employee told Kobe what he tweeted. I think that is Kobe taking some poetic license looking for some attention.

Kobe never personally forced the trade, however Kobe at the time was still eligable for NCAA and if he was drafted by a shitty team he would have decided to stay in college and the team that drafted him would lose their draft rights to him. That was dangled over the heads of shitty teams by his "advisor", Kobe never signed an agent at the time, so he was still eligable for NCAA. His then "advisor" (now his agent) was good friends with Jerry West. I believe they orchistrated this whole thing before hand.

That's an interesting theory. I remember hearing the same thing when Kurt Rambis had some clout. It goes back to my original point about dropping a name though. It becomes superficial otherwise.

Dude, Bob Bass landed Frank Brickowski for Thompson, who was fucking horrible in his stint in San Antonio. I'm still mad as hell Brickowski got traded for that fat piece of shit Pressey a few years later, cause Brick was an excellent backup to DRob.

Baseline I respect you cuz you go way back and there are not many of us that do. Point is....Bass made several trades that always seem to help the Lakers. In the Thompson trade, Brick did work out and was a great player, but Thompson really helped the Lakers to back to back titles. Bass said Brick was a clubhouse lawyer and traded him for Paul Pressey who was 35 and hadn't played the prior year because of knee problems. Horrible, stupid trade. Then when Bass drafted and traded Kobe to the Lakers, it was like....WTF, is this guy on their payroll?

Bass did have 1 trade in which he ripped off the Lakers. The Glen Rice trade was a steal for Bass. Bass was able to trade a Rice who was old and injured for Eddie Jones, Elden Campbell. I believe if that trade doesn't go down the Lakers probably have 1 or 2 more titles.

Indeed that was a horrible trade but Dr Buss forced it…Eldon had a reputation for being lazy & Dr. Buss wanted him gone after the Lakers acquired Shaq…Eddie Jones was a fan favorite, I do not understand why they gave him away…Phil Jackson was not fond of Rice & even made fun of his wife for medaling in coaching decisions ….

Eldon would have been a nice back up for Shaq & had the Lakers kept him, Shaq would have had needed rest on his 320 lb body...

I do believe that Eddie would have worked great in Phil Jackson's triangle system. He was an above average defensive player back then and he was a good slasher. His skill set was very similar to Scottie Pippen. The Lakers were always able to matchup well with the Spurs twin tower lineup by going with Shaq-Elden together. The Lakers won the majority of times with that line up against the Spurs. When that trade went down I was shocked and thought it was a pretty stupid trade at that time.
