Okay, probably just a continuation of the kind of workouts he did after he was drafted, and the coach names players who will be in the summer league, like Davis's brother, but not him.

Latvia head coach Ainars Bagatskis has welcomed back plenty of familiar faces at his team's first practice session of their training camp for the upcoming EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualification Round.

...

"Davis Bertans meanwhile will travel to the USA to train individually."

The youngest of the Bertans brothers had debuted with the senior national team at EuroBasket 2011, at the age of 19, but missed out on last September's EuroBasket due to a remarkably unfortunate incident as the ACL in his right knee was torn in Partizan Belgrade's last game of the 2013 season.

"All these players have regularly played for the youth national teams in the past and have confirmed that they will gladly play for the senior team in the future," Bagatskis clarified to dispense any long-term worries.

"I respect the players' choices," the Latvian coach stated.

"Participation in national teams is voluntary and our players do not receive any remuneration for it.

"I just want to remind that our national teams are organised, as far as possible, in a way that takes into account the individual needs of the players.

"I hope that the young players will achieve their objectives this summer, be successful with their clubs in the new season and work even harder to be candidates for the national team.

The relevant bit about who will play summer league.

"We will spend the first two weeks of preparations training in Riga and three players, Dairis Bertans, Janis Timma and Kaspars Berzins will play in the NBA Summer League and join the team later," Bagatskis said.

"The final deadline is the end of July and we are not worried about their fitness level since they will not be in America on holiday, but it's another question how fast they will integrate into the team."

Dairis is his older bro I believe, it's not him...

Exactly. I posted that bit to show that the coach named who would be in summer league, but Davis wasn't among them. He's only coming for training.

How is this kid? I know nothing about him what kind of player is he? And do you think he has the potential to succeed in the nba

I watched his last three Adriatic league games, his only three actually.

I think he could play right now, my write up of my opinion is on his thread in the Think Tank. I also put links for those games if anyone wants to watch and make up their own minds.

The plot thickens:

David Bertans agreed to terms with Partizan Belgrade to break the contract, his agent said.
The Latvian is now free agent.
The Latvian player was pursued by Galatasaray a few days ago.

FWIW, NBA teams have until September 6th each year to tender a contract offer to second round draft picks that are not under contract with another team.

Seems like a very unusual move on Bertan's part.

You seem to be suggesting that he is trying to force the Spurs hand in bringing him over or to free him to become an ufa. What are your thoughts? It be good to hear from Chinook as well.

Well, if he is coming over, I see Bonner the guy leaving unless the Spurs somehow find a way to ship out Aryes. I guess the Spurs want to fill the floor with 6'7" - 6'10" guys that can pass and hit the 3 ball.

I hope he does come over. He looks ready. He needs that time to work with Chip and also learn the Spurs system. He can spend most of the year with the Toros to learn the system and be ready to contribute by March and in the playoffs if the Spurs need him.

He was linked to a Turkish club, but talks broke off because the buyout was too high. He's a free agent now and there are no obstacles to signing with any major European team, or to accepting an offer from the Spurs (whether or not it's one the Spurs would prefer to make this summer). It's an interesting development.

How would he be able to break the contract? Did he buy it out himself? Seems like he really wants an NBA payday, desperately.

45% 3pt avg over the past 3 years, great passer, actually can slash to the basket. At 2:40 of the vid he picks the ball up at the FT line and dunks it.

Here is a good article of him as well. The last I heard, he is up to 220lb. He has been over for two summers already and workout with Pop and Chip. I believe getting his weight up was one of the things mentioned that the Spurs wanted to see him do.

Not really. He did the same thing in his previous club. Went home "for holidays" and never returned.

His shot looks fine, and release is good, but that seems to be about it.

He may be coming to SA for individual workouts like he has been doing just about every off-season.

Still think next year is the plan to jump over, even with the development of the recent news.

Makes more sense to come over next year when/if Daye and Beli are gone (more roster spots, more opportunity next year).

Likely, but boring.

We could use a little crazy on the team. I'd like to see Bertans just show up uninvited for Summer League practice.

I'd love to package Daye/Ayers to free up a spot for Bertans. Also, to get rid of Ayres tbh.

I though his team was having money issues and could not afford him that is why he is a free agent?

The problem is I can't think of any team that would want either of them much less both of them.

Yeah this pipe dream reminds me of when we were always hearing trade packages that involved Blair, Bonner, and De Colo I think it was. Or when we pulled that genius trade to get R.J. and his bloated albatross contract. I'm more hopeful (will stop short of saying realistic) that Daye and/or Ayres gets better in our system but playing from the bottom of our roster they are more likely one and done guys I'd think.
