The Philadelphia 76ers have expressed a willingness to trade for Houston Rockets guard Jeremy Lin depending on what sort of assets Houston is willing to attach to the deal, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Sixers, who have ample room on their payroll to absorb Lin's contract, have emerged as a leading contender to take on Lin in a trade that sends no salary back to the Rockets, which would enable the Rockets to extend a rich offer in free agency to either Carmelo Anthony or Chris Bosh.

Sources say that the Milwaukee Bucks are another team that would consider trading for Lin if the Rockets add a sweetener or two to the deal for the privilege of shedding Lin's contract to a team that can comfortable absorb it.

It's believed that the Rockets would have to send Philadelphia at least one future first-round pick to convince the Sixers to go through with the deal, given that Lin is owed $15 million next season despite the fact that his contract will only count for $8.4 million for salary cap purposes.

Sources say that the Sixers, though, are happy to take on Lin -- despite the presence of reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams as their starting point guard -- provided that the extra asset or two they get from Houston is sufficiently attractive.

Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie is close with Rockets GM Daryl Morey after working alongside Morey before Hinkie's move to Philadelphia.

The Rockets have maintained for months that they could find trades for center Omer Asik and Lin if necessary to create the needed salary-cap space to bring in a star player this summer.

Houston has already agreed to trade Asik to New Orleans for a first-round pick after July 10, but Rockets officials have privately maintained that they would only trade Lin if they are sure that they are getting a player of Anthony's or Bosh's caliber.

As Riley pursues Luol Deng, Anthony Morrow and others in an attempt to deliver the roster upgrades that James is seeking, James' agent, Rich Paul, has spoken with the Rockets, Mavs, Suns, Cavs and Lakers. Teams have been told that if the Heat aren't successful in making roster additions soon, James would choose finalists and meet with them in person as early as next week.

:rollin damn you in serious denial...

a) there's literally no point in playing mind games... all it is doing is discouraging free agents that were supposed to "retool" your team from signing since they have no clue what the team will look like. those free agents are slowly signing away with other teams in the meantime during these "mind games"

b) at this point your best-case scenario is to roll with what is basically last year's roster, only with an even older Wade, just to get crushed in the finals again after you blow your load beating up on the Hornets and Nets in the playoffs

what's the purpose of "playing mind games" when all the free agents that are supposed to improve their team this year are avoiding the Heat due to the uncertainty around the big 3? fact is, nobody would come to miami if the big 3 weren't intact... so waiting around is just making their sales pitch harder, and FA's don't want to wait too long before the market dries up. a guy like Spencer Hawes for example, would have been a helpful acquisition

Hard to get guys to take a discount on THE CHANCE LeBron re-signs with the Heat. This is getting more complicated by the day. Really the best thing is the re-sign the big three at the lowest possible price and then go after the free agents. The back asswards approach is not going to cut. it.

How do you clear $9 million more without salary dumping Dragic and one of Greene/Morris twins? Len, 2 of Green/Morris/Morris, and Plumlee isn't a supporting cast that's going to draw them out of Miami.

How do you clear $9 million more without salary dumping Dragic and one of Greene/Morris twins? Len, 2 of Green/Morris/Morris, and Plumlee isn't a supporting cast that's going to draw them out of Miami.

Here's how the AZ Republic reported the initial plan:

The Suns would need to renounce rights to unrestricted free agent Channing Frye (he has a $9.6 million cap hold) and trade away other salaries (possibly Alex Len's rookie contract, expiring contracts for Marcus Morris and Gerald Green or first-round pick Tyler Ennis, who has Toronto's interest)

Under that scenario, they would still have Dragic, Plumlee, Markieff, Goodwin, rookies, plus they would then go above the cap to resign restricted free agents Eric Bledsoe and PJ Tucker.

baseline bum
07-05-2014, 06:30 PM
Phoenix is actually in a pretty fucking great salary cap situation: Bledsoe unrenounced will only count $6.6M against their cap figure, as he is Full Bird coming off his fourth year rookie contract, so the cap hold is 250% of his 2013-14 salary.

That leaves the Suns with about $28.5 million to spend and then they can go over the cap to sign Bledsoe after, assuming Sarver isn't too fucking cheap. I'm actually kind of shocked they can't pull Anthony, because Bledsoe and whatever they can get trading high for Dragic plus having young players with really good chemistry murders anything New York can put together.

The only way they are going to get Luol Deng is from a combination of the big 3 taking a paycut and the Heat FO picking up the rest of the tab. I don't see the Heat FO footing the whole bill and paying the luxury tax penalties for the next 3 years. None of these top free agents are going to sign on the cheap to MAYBE when a championship.

I don't see the Heat FO footing the whole bill and paying the luxury tax penalties for the next 3 years. None of these top free agents are going to sign on the cheap to MAYBE when a championship.
I don't think they can go over the cap even to resign their own players. I mean I'm sure someone would have mentioned that by now if they could. I don't really understand the salary cap that well so maybe they can

My understanding is Suns only wanted Anthony if they got James also. They didn't want Anthony by himself.

Here's how the AZ Republic reported the initial plan:

Under that scenario, they would still have Dragic, Plumlee, Markieff, Goodwin, rookies, plus they would then go above the cap to resign restricted free agents Eric Bledsoe and PJ Tucker.

Completely impossible. I don't know where Coro is getting this idea, but Beasley still counts against your cap figure since you amnestied Childress and can't amnesty him too. If Phoenix salary dumps everyone but Dragic and Bledsoe their cap situation looks like:

1. Dragic $7.5M
2. Hold for Bledsoe $6.6M
3. Beasley contract $2.3M
4. Cap hold for empty roster spots under 12 = 10 * $0.47M = $4.7M

So that gives $21.1 million. Subtract that from $63.2 million and you get $42.1 million. Since James and Bosh have more than 10 years in the league, their max is 35% of the cap, or $22.1 million. So you're short $2.1 million even after renouncing everyone but Bledsoe and trading everyone but he and Dragic for nothing.

All I know is that it's been reported everywhere. Wojnarowski claimed:

The Suns have $33.5 million in salary-cap space and could shed the next $10 million needed to sign James and Anthony to maximum contracts without unloading the young core of guards Eric Bledsoe and Goran Dragic and center Miles Plumlee that pushed the franchise to 48 victories in the Western Conference last season.

The cap hold was put into the CBA to address this loophole. Fortunately for Phoenix, Bledsoe is coming off a really cheap rookie contract, so that cap hold is only about half of what his market value could be. So his $6.6 million cap hold counts against the cap and they can use their Full Bird Rights to go over the cap later to sign him. It's a great loophole for late first round picks who blow up their fourth year.

Washed-Up Wade costing the Heat free agents.... SMH!

How? He opted out and gave Riley breathing room.

Wade is most definitely not going to get what he would have gotten, had he opted in.

Riley just fucked himself, imo. Almost impossible situation.

I was talking about the Heat. In the old days they could sign like Deng to whatever and then go over the cap to resign all their players i think but they can't do that anymore. I think that's what that guy was implying the Miami should do

Yeah, that doesn't work and Miami can't go out and sign Deng like that. James, Wade, and Bosh will all count 150% of their 2013-14 salary against the cap until either renounced or re-signed. That comes to about $86 million right now.

If they opted in Miami could only offer the mini-MLE instead of the full MLE.

Since no one good seems to want that (Ariza, Deng, Lowry, etc) seems like its a slight difference in the scrubs they're gonna have around them at this point. I mean who are they even gonna get. Looks like nobody good at this point

Reporters have been really awful at understanding the cap this off-season. First, you had Aldridge completely botch the terms of a Leonard extension. Then, he messed up the LaMarcus extension talks. Now you have reporters confusing salary with cap holds.

The only way the Suns can really afford two max deals is if they sign one with cap space then S&T Bledsoe for the second. I don't know why it's so hard for the people who get paid to cover the NBA to understand the CBA.

Yep. It only made sense to give up that cash of he had full assurance of what Miami would do, with numbers in place. Even if the big 3 come back at this point, their roster won't really be improved. He gave up the money for nothing in that case

Its his first game......in the summer league. Give him a break.

On Riley:

There are various risks to having to overpay Bosh and Wade to stay and the worst is it leaving the Heat to have to rebuild after four years of easily stagnating and regressing.

At this point, Wade is not receiving the contract he thinks he deserves. Wade must settle for a reserved role. Bosh is still young enough however being in a lesser role in Miami has made him a different player.

The Heat used their amnesty on Mike Miller.

As of right now, there still isn't any contending Miami Heat. There hasn't been a contract signing. Real Heat fans should be nervous. The fictional heat fans are deciding who they'll become a fan of next.
