Illegal, please

One progressive took to the press to call for an immediate end to a commonly used word that she deems derogatory and dehumanizing.
Sally Kohn wrote in a CNN column on Independence day that the term “Illegal Immigrants” needs to cease in commentary on immigration reform, calling for a complete end to it’s public usage as it is offensive and politically incorrect. Kohn equivocated the term to being as socially deplorable as “n*gger” and “f*ggot”.

“Today, opponents of immigration reform attack undocumented immigrants as ‘illegal immigrants.’ Even worse, like anti-immigration extremists, some prominent elected officials use the term ‘illegals.’ Maine Gov. Paul LePage, a Republican, said, ‘I urge all Mainers to tell your city councilors and selectmen to stop handing out your money to illegals.’ ” Kohn wrote in her piece for CNN.
She goes on to call for the elimination of the term “illegal” from public discourse, essentially arguing that social pressure should be employed to rid American parlance of the adjective. The progressive is doing her part to impose that pressure, supporting the political correctness police group “Race Forward” who has a current campaign to get media organizations to drop ‘Drop The I-Word” in all reporting on immigration.

“So far, the campaign has succeeded in getting the Associated Press, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times and many other outlets to stop using the word. But the pressure continues on The New York Times, The Washington Post and radio and television outlets. And the campaign around media usage is just one step toward influencing and ultimately ending the use of the word ‘illegal’ by everyone in America.” Kohn wrote.

Kohn proposes a politically positive word to replace this label in those who are entering our country illegally, suggesting that these individuals be referred to as “undocumented immigrants”.

Whether she intended that the word “undocumented” would come to connote “illegal,” or whether she intended that abolishing the use of the word “illegal” would, by association, eliminate the unlawful nature of such immigration, was unclear.

Illegal immigrant is sort of a weird term. Should be illegal alien or squatter. An immigrant is legal otherwise not an immigrant

Repugs worst fear is Hispanics starting to vote. Same with ex-felons. Most Hispanics, esp younger ones, are disengaged politically and don't vote.

so called illegal immigrants, unless they commit crimes, are not subject to criminal process. crossing a border without proper documents is an administrative violation, not a crime.

I believe an alien present in the US in violation of the INA is here unlawfully. The INA determines who is here lawfully so failing to go through the proper administrative agencies would be breaking the law. It is a violation of administrative law. But the INA is found in the Code of Federal Regulations under Title 8.

I disagree and believe they are criminals.

Violating federal law is a crime. Illegal immigrants can be arrested and detained until they go before the IJ that has the authority to deport them. They are not always detained through the process the way we do not detain a driver for violating a posted speed limit while the driver awaits prosecution.

They might not be prosecuted to serve jail time, but I believe they can be fined and deported.

Immigration laws[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Illegal_immigration_to_the_United_ States&action=edit&section=21)]

Main articles: United States nationality law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_nationality_law) and List of United States immigration laws (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_immigration_laws)

Immigrants can be classified as illegal for one of three reasons: entering without authorization or inspection, staying beyond the authorized period after legal entry, or violating the terms of legal entry.[56] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_immigration_to_the_United_States#cite_note-The_New_Americans:_Economic.2C_Demographic.2C_and_ Fiscal_Effects_of_Immigration-56)

Section 1325 in Title 8 of the United States Code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_8_of_the_United_States_Code), "Improper entry of alien", provides for a fine, imprisonment, or both for any noncitizen who:[57] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_immigration_to_the_United_States#cite_note-cornell-57)

enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration agents, or
eludes examination or inspection by immigration agents, or
attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact.

The maximum prison term is 6 months for the first offense and 2 years for any subsequent offense. In addition to the above criminal fines and penalties, civil fines may also be imposed.

Arizona, which passed immigration enforcement law Arizona SB 1070 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_SB_1070) in April 2010, is currently the "toughest bill on illegal immigration" in the United States,[58] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_immigration_to_the_United_States#cite_note-nyt-az-law-58) and is being challenged by the Department of Justice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Department_of_Justice) as encroaching on powers reserved by the United States Constitution to the Federal Government.[58] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_immigration_to_the_United_States#cite_note-nyt-az-law-58)

On July 28, 2010, United States district court (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_district_court) judge Susan Bolton issued a preliminary injunction affecting the most controversial parts of the law, including the section that required police officers to check a person's immigration status after a person had been involved in another act or situation which resulted in police activity.[59] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_immigration_to_the_United_States#cite_note-archibold-59)

yeah I like that idea of saving the word immigrant for a person legally here.

...but I also don't care if the term "illegal immigrant" is used since those are the correct words to use for some.

How about defendant? You cross a border illegally, you've committed a crime. Plain and simple. I'm sorry your shitty country sucks but you need to get in line just like everyone else.

Much of the shittiness of MX + Centro America, with some states actually "failed", is America's responsibility due to its businesses of War on Drugs, its steady, huge appetite for illegal drugs, plus corporate scams like NAFTA.
