View Full Version : A new record for Tim Duncan

Galileo

Tim Duncan has lead more teammates to the NBA championship with the same team than anyone.

* more than Russell

* more than Jordan

* more than Magic

* more than anyone.

If you count other teams, Jabbar might have more, clever researchers here at spurstalk could find that out.

:flag:

UPDATE: Timmy had 42 teammates who played with him in playoffs and won a ring with him!

It isn't that specific a record. It's actually impressive. It means he's won more times with a constantly changing team around him instead of just winning with a mega stacked team in a short timeframe like most players who win multiple titles do.

OK, I did the research, counting only teammates who played in playoffs:

1999 >>> 11 teammates
2003 >>> 8 new teammates
2005 >>> 8 new teammates
2007 >>> 5 new teammates
2014 >>> 10 new teammates

TOTAL TIM DUNCAN TEAMMATES WHO WON RINGS >>> 42

Let's see who can do the research on the others mentioned in this thread, Russell, Jordan, Magic, Jabbar, Horry.

Taking the 42 number as correct for Timmy, he has just passed Kareem, who had 41 different teammates in his 6 title seasons.

The thing to look out for are the players who are either on 10 day contracts or traded before the end of the season or released players.

Make sure not to double count those who have won it already with the Spurs. Repeats would be Tony, Bruce, Manu, Brent, Beno, Matt, Robert etc....

I thought it was 50, but I see 49 up there.

EDIT!!!!

Damion James 2014 Team makes 50!!!

On December 5, 2013, he was re-acquired by the Bakersfield Jam.[10] On February 20, 2014, he was traded to the Texas Legends.[11] On April 3, 2014, he signed a 10-day contract with the San Antonio Spurs.[12] On April 13, 2014, he signed with the Spurs for the rest of the season.[13] On June 15, 2014, James won his first NBA championship after the Spurs defeated the Miami Heat 4 games to 1 in the 2014 NBA Finals.

Only all stars should count tbh, not role players who bounce around to the best teams

Speaking of which, "with the same team" was part of the record, so that technically disqualifies him anyway.

It's not interesting at all. You can make up a virtually infinite number of these specific, arbitrary records. So and so is the first player to score at least 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists in 20 minutes at the age of 35 (or older). No one fucking cares. If you dig deep enough you'll be able to find and fabricate 1000 things that Tim Duncan holds a record in.

This record is especially stupid because your "with the same team" qualifier adds nothing to the prestige of the record. It's effectively used as a tool to eliminate better players.

It's funny during our championship ceremony stuart scott had to add a key qualifier to yet another inane record - Tim duncan is the only player in nba history to start for a championship team in 3 different decades. By adding the "start" qualifier he eliminated some no-name scrub from the competition. It's fucking ridiculous. Just shut the fuck up already.

The Lakers gave one to him, but he ain't an NBA champion. The organization can give a ring to anyone they want. So if the Spurs wanted they could give a ring to Nando and it still wouldnt make him a champion.

Except for the fact that its NIGH IMPOSSIBLE to set a record like this because it takes a special kind of longevity and talent and gameplay to set it. Tim's not an end of the bench guy this late in his career like John Salley was.

You've missed that concept and that alone, invalidates your assertion. If it was easy to do, there'd be more than Tim Duncan and Bill Russell doing it...Get it?
