Past bad decisions coming home to roost. They needed to replace Livingston and they're looking to reduce their tax bill.

Great job by Boston. Who cares about taking on Thorton's short deal when it won't likely have any ramifications on future moves and they will likely suck this year anyways. Getting Zeller + another first for doing so when they have tons of room anyways is solid.

BKY having to operate with taking less money back, but they got the better player so it makes sense for them.

CLE taking a massive gamble to go for Lebron.

I'm assuming it was CLE giving up the first rounder and not BKY. If it was BKY, then it makes the deal a little more palatable for CLE but still a lot to give up for dumping Jack (Zeller & Karasev).

They got to save money in the deal while getting the better player at a position of need and got what was the 19th pick of the first round this year. They gave up the first to Boston I bet.

Ainge continues to collect pieces for a Kevin Love trade. Even Thornton's sizable expiring contract could be useful in that regard.

I really wonder how much of this move has James' approval, though. Perhaps Cavs make this move knowing that if they whiff on Lebron, they will just go after another top FA or perhaps a couple of middle-tier FAs to put around their core.

My feeling is this is more of a gamble by the Cavs, but...Holy shit, the fallout if James doesn't go back to Cleveland now would be astronomical.

Team wise I dont see the harm. They gave up a 1st which has great value but Zeller and Karasev? Dont see the huge loss. I get Celts trying to improve "love package" but still think Cavs can make that happen too and Love already said he would re-sign if traded there ...

He's definitely made some chicken salad. If Ray hadn't bolted to Miami, they'd probably still have Doc, KG, and Pierce. Once the group started to fall apart, he made the best of it. Celtic fans have reason to be hopeful.

Man, in seeing the confirmation that CLE gave up the first rounder, again :wow CLE. A future 1st (not sure what the details are), Zeller & Karasev to dump Jack. Just a massive gamble (not Jack so much, but Zeller/this year's 19th pick/future first).

Obviously BOS did a good job. But now knowing it wasn't BKY who gave up the pick, they did a very good job too. In order to save themselves money and get the better player (Jack vs Thornton), all they had to do was take CLE's 19th pick this year :lol

Nice pick for BOS. Only top 10 protected. Sure, if they don't land Lebron there's a shot that they really suck, but even if they don't land Lebron, they have a lot of cap space and might actually win enough games to not get a top 10 pick. If they land Lebron, they net that pick (even though it will be a late first) next year.

Boston got a plethora of picks in the next 5 years. Ainge has put them in a position to be a contender within 5 years if they draft smart and make a couple of moves in FA. Shit like this doesn't happen overnight. It took 7 years of the Spurs retooling the roster and making changes to their system to finally find the winning formula again.

Bird can't do anything tbh, the price he gave Lance was right. Can't blame him that some idiot gm thinks Hayward deserves the max.

I agree Bird was in the right. But he can blame his colleagues for throwing pricing out of wack ...TBH Lakers would be wise to do nothing allow contracts to evaporate pay off their picks owed ... and bank that cap space for future big fish since we gave away picks like candy.

Let's not be naive. James has given his agent power to negotiate for him. People can't deflect any of this blame if the deal doesn't go down.
+ 1. There's too much at stake here, these are not autograph sessions or commercial spots where agents themselves can decide for their respective clients. I find it hard to believe Lebron has no clue or input in a decision this big.

Exactly. Everyone fighting over Melo, let me repeat MELO. James trolling either the Heat or Cavs. If he picks Cavs, the Heat fans will be looking like those Brazilian fans from yesterday. Hayward getting 15mil. Rockets dissing Lin and Parson and striking out on Melo. Bosh for the Max (REALLY).

I wish he would tbh. He'd be challenged every single night. The West is so good that even teams that don't make the playoffs (Nuggets, Suns, Timberwolves etc) are still pretty good. As a result of the tougher competition I'm sure we'd see Lebron elevate his game even further. But I don't think the same guy who went to go collude with other all-stars in order to win rings would even consider going to the ultra competitive Western conference. He's content to bully teams like the Pacers, Bobcats and the Wizards instead.

Yeah, plus the Cavs has made Jack available this off season and they enticed Brooklyn by dangling a future first rounder, so this deal has always been in place to begin with.

Makes no sense for to move him all his cars when when he is leaving next week for USA camp and will only have 2-3 weeks before having to report back to camp back in Miami (assuming he returns).

And Jack, who had his worse season in like 6 years last year. A top 10 protected pick for the next 5 years. That isn't risking it. Trading away Kyle or Wiggins w/o signing Lebron is risking it.

It's not just that. Dismiss Zeller & Karasev all you want (which is fine by me) even though they were both first round picks recently. But when you factor in the future first rounder as well (even though it may be a 20+ pick if they land good players like Lebron with the moves) it's a big deal.

It's especially a big deal because in a bubble, that is a lot to dump a player like Jack who doesn't have some absurd contract. They had to give up way more than you normally would in order to dump a guy like Jack with (as of now) no assurance that Lebron will come.

Then you factor in the Luol Deng deal and what they gave up (with no assurance Deng would stay):

In exchange for Deng, the Cavs send Cleveland's right to the Sacramento King's first round draft pick conveyed in a June 30, 2011 deal, the right for Chicago to swap its own 2015 first round draft pick with the Cavs own 2015 first round draft pick (only in the case that the Cleveland 2015 first round draft pick is between 15 and 30) and the Portland Trail Blazer's 2015 and 2016 second round draft picks acquired from the Trail Blazers via a 2013 draft night trade.

That is a ton of assets to give up for a franchise that needs assets.

Again, I think it was worth it for several reasons:

1) They still had plenty of upcoming draft picks at the time (including #1's)
2) They had plenty of recent draft picks and young/cheap talent from previous years
3) You can only have so many young/cheap contracts before they become an issue and you have to trade them or lose them
4) It's hard to get FA talent in CLE

It's a worthwhile gamble IMO, but they are taking big risks with their assets that are good and will be set back if they have nothing to show for it outside of cap flexibility (which may help them recover some).
