Looking forward to him yelling at Kawhi for years to come.

Great news, he's clearly thinking beyond Timmy's playing days. I wonder if Kawhis potential has been a factor in his decision.

Now we just need to grab a big free agent when Timmy hangs 'em up.

Wow - great to hear for two reasons. One, hopefully it means 1-3 more years of Duncan & Co. Two, there is no one better to set the tone for newer players taking over once the big 3 are gone and get the ship off to a great start :tu

Spurs news (Patty, Boris, Pop, Pau to a lesser degree) has slowly been dripping amongst the million other pieces of news.

BTW, if Pop stays for another 4 seasons and we win at least 50 games each season (which is about as certain as the sun rising at this point), he'll move to 5th all-time in wins for coaches...ahead of Phil, Larry Brown, Rick Adelman, and George Karl :toast

In order to pass Phil in all time win% for a coach, Pop would have to average 63 wins over the next 5 years. Likely unattainable.

SupremeGuy

He's probably thinking that we have a pretty damn good young core that's going to be competitive for years to come, and wants to be part of that.

Agreed. But as I pointed out, he can still pass him in all-time wins. Would only need to average 47 wins over the next 4 years...which is pretty likely IMO.

I'm a little surprised. Always thought Pop would take over as president of basketball operations full time in a year or two especially since the league has been going through a massive changing of the guard. Pop is already the oldest coach in the NBA and most coaches are in their 40s and 50s. Teams are even going younger, hiring players right after they retire or even hiring players younger than a lot of NBA players (Boston).

But this is good news, Pop is one of best coaches in all of sports history. No better person to smooth the transition when Duncan retires and no better person to keep developing Leonard.

SpursTalk is elated with this news: for some, it's more time to appreciate a man with incredible perspective who also happens to be exceptionally good at his job; for others, it's 4 to 5 more years of complaining about that man and his utter incompetence.

Win-win, indeed.

I'm thrilled. 20+ years with one of the all-time greats at the helm is simply remarkable.

Maybe SA becomes (albeit slightly) a more attractive destination now for FA's now.

Not to mention with the way they still gave Patty a fair deal despite the injury, and how there's so little drama throughout the postseason. Has to make it attractive to guys even if the peripheral factors (lack of Meatpacking / South Beach / etc. clubs) aren't.

Can Pop win one w/out Timmy? He has no peers in the coaching ranks, except for Carlisle, maybe. I think he can coach circles around Scott Brooks, Spoelstra, Stotts, McHale, Kidd....all these green coaches give him a chance to go for the jugular.
It is conceivable that there will be future parades on the river walk. What a kick-ass coach!!!!

I believe Pop would have retired if not for emergence of Kawhi, Patty, Green Splitter, etc. to form a solid group to build on. I was hoping he stayed to help develop LJC and Bertansas well. Spurs look like they have a promising young team after Manu and Tim hang it up.

I wouldn't be Surprise if Gasol signed w the Spurs after this news. He is basically assured to playing for the best coach in the NBA today for the rest of his career he wanted to.

As others have mentioned, this is going to help attract even more talented people to this team. The ability to play for Pop and in his organization is huge for a lot of folks. Letting them know that he will be around for a while really helps with assuring them that he is not going to bail on them after a year or two.

Excellent!!
