View Full Version : Does 5 complete you?

The Spurs have won 5 Championships now.
They have given away at least 2 (2006 and 2013), and some would say other years.

Some, dare i say most of you were completely happy with 4. Even if they'd never won the 5th.

Myself, while 5 does not complete me, it's so much better then leaving with the giveaway of 2013 had the Spurs not won this year.
Complete? No, but again much much better.
A 6th would complete me.

for me it completes me for Tims career. longest drought without a title in his career and now we dont have to hear the laker bandwaggon kobe lovers compare 5 to 4 rings anymore. it was the cherry on top for me. but i want to see the spurs in the finals every year

Steve-O-Matic
07-10-2014, 06:04 PM
It does for me. Any more rings from this core would be gravy for me, and I think they're capable, but if that doesn't happen I'll still feel fulfilled. I wouldn't have without #5, though.

This is the frst time a team i was a fan of won a championship in the three major sports. I'd at least need a San Diego team to win something.

I thought the '99 title completed me as far as being a Spurs fan goes. The 2014 title had special significance though after last season and the long drought after 2007. I always figured Tim would get at least 5 titles. Now Manu and Tony need their thumb ring.

But, yeah, I'm pretty much set.

If you can what if no .4, manu foul, or allen three then you should be able to what if a whole bunch of other things that gave us the good fortune of 5 championships.

07-10-2014, 06:09 PM
Yeah I'm good with 5 for Duncan's career. 4 Definitely would have felt a bit short, especially considering the last one came in 2007 and how things ended in 2013 but now that that's all history he can ride off to the sunset with 5 and i'd be more than happy.

The fact that we refer to 2008-2013 as the 'drought' shows just how bloody lucky we really are.

For most franchises, the example of a drought would be 1976-2004...

Yes, but it would be nice to catch the Bulls and possibly pass them, especially with the big three still playing. (I know...dreaming big!) Seven would put the Spurs second only to the Lakers in titles won, since the franchise has been in the NBA.

The championships just make me more proud to be a Spurs fan and will affect how I treasure the memories of this era of Spurs basketball. If anything, it was losing the championship last year that allowed me to take a step back from the sports world and realize that these games we watch don't affect our lives at all, and any pain we experience from losing is avoidable if you just change the way you think about it. I'm not trying to say losing is okay or doesn't suck by any means, just saying that feeling bad doesn't have to mean you're hurting.

Sports are a great hobby. Being a fan is a great privilege. But saying you "need" a championship to "complete" you is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Plenty of fans don't even get to experience one, and here you are saying five titles isn't enough and you need another one. Shut up and go outside, Fabbs.

Pretty much completes me as a Spurs fan. But being spoiled I definitely want 6. Tim just passed Shaq Daddy. Now he is even with Kobe and Magic. One more would put him above Kobe and Magic and equal with that egotistical douchebag Michael Jordan. 5 was a dream but felt like we made up for the fails of 11/12/13. To go B2B and win Championship 6 would not just be great but absolutely historic.

My life is still the same win or lose. However, last year left a gaping hole of shittiness, so least it doesn't feel like that.

I thought 5 would satiate me, and in somewhat has, but there is still a hunger. Shit, anytime you make a great movie, even if you caught lightning in a bottle, it's human instinct to make a sequel.

More than anything, I'm happy they won this one because I wanted to see Tim and Pop's trust in what they built be rewarded. Also, the trolls on here would've been at their absolute worst if they lost, i notice a lot of them have amnesia suddenly and act less trollish. But fuck them.

I know how badly he wanted that 5th one and to have it all but wrapped up last year and letting it slipped hurt to the core but now that's remedied so its a nice end to that chase.

From a Spurs fan perspective, I want more of course so I will never say I'm happy with just 5 rings. I want them to win at least 4 or 5 more within my life time. Maybe asking alot but certainly doable.

I feel the exact opposite.

As a Spurs fan, I feel that #5 or #6 does not make much difference in terms of its ranking among all 30 teams (First obviously there are Celtics and Lakers, then Spurs, Bulls, etc.).

As a TD fan, it would make a huge difference to his status among all-time greats between 5 rings & never repeat and 6 rings & b2b. Timmy may get into discussion of top 5 or even top 3 if he gets #6 next year.

The 99 championship atoned for the 79 screw job against the Bullets, when the phantom foul against Paultz cost us the EC championship( we would have beaten the Sonics in Finals)

The 14 championship atoned for the 13 meltdown.

It redeems Pop - and you could see that he knew he was responsible for taking Timmy's 5th away - and he came back and made up for it.

It eases the sting a little - of not having 6-7-8 titles - but in no way does it "complete" anything.

Spurs were down 0-2 and 1-3 in that series before coming back too, right? That was a pretty sweet series. Honestly, I was so good after '99, everything else has pretty much been a joy. Even frustrating shit like smallball and the centerpiece can't dim that. To this day, when the Spurs win a playoff series I breathe a sigh of relief. There were a lot of years the Spurs were really good and couldn't get out of the first round. Can't imagine what it was like for the really long-suffering Spurs fans who've been there all along.

for a Fan it's effing great, something to brag about to your friends etc.. that you are rooting for such a great team, probably because the team is a reflection of how you see yourself or the values you believe in.

So the Spurs winning, how they accomplished it, through the whole span and saga of it all... and the resolve they showed to come back from the brink and walk away with the triumph and the validation, with all the depth and undercurrents surrounding the stories of all the players..

I mean it doesn't complete me... obviously, but it's like the universe telling me I'm on the right path and to keep going by showing me this example.

But I'm just a someone who is reading that story.

I'm so happy more so for the actual people in it... Tim Duncan, Manu, Pop, Tony, Bonner, Splitter, Kawhi, Mills and the rest.. that they don't have to be haunted by 2013, that it's now OK... just something that tests you, a trial to go through, the epitome of how it's darkest before dawn.

It's that energy and fuel, the simple joy, that their Victory gives, that helps to sustain us.. So when it's time for us to "go for our 5th" we believe that it's possible.

Yuixafun

And If the Spurs weren't sharpened by the events of last year, driven by it... who knows if they could have attained the level of play they achieved and displayed during the last 3 games of the Finals.

They had the will and power to dig deep and came up with a diamond, a brand of basketball... that honestly feels like in a different realm than any other team...

The rest of the league is 5 years behind
