Throw in a 2nd round pick with Jeff Ayres and ship him off to the Lakers... This guy needs a spot on this team :worthy:

Jeff Ayres, a 5yr veteran is getting outplayed in the Summer League :lmao If I see this clown clap his hands one more time after a fuck-up...

We need to bring him into camp because I think he can beat out Austin Daye. If we are going to have someone at the end of our bench, we need defense and shot blocking in the front court on our roster way more than we need another finesse three point chucker.

Do they have some kind of tournament? I kind of recall them changing the format a year or so ago and they have a tournament.

Does each team play the same amount of games, or do you have to keep winning to play more games? How many games are the Spurs scheduled to play?

I definitely would like to get more of a look at some of these young guys like JaMychal Green. I don't think I need to see any more of Ayres.

Funny that Udoka chose to use the word "rest" to describe sitting these two. If anything, these guys have had too much rest but whatever PR jargon gets them off the court and gets Green in is fine by me.

Spurs usually raid other d-league teams for talent. DGreen, Othyus Jeffers, Garrett Temple, and Steve Novak all came from other d-league teams. The only callup I can remember from the Toros who spent more than a 10 day was Hairston.

The Spurs have gone out of their way to bring everyone back. Unless there is a team that makes them a STUPID good offer, they'll roll into the playoffs with the team that leaves camp.

I wasn't talking about shipping out cogs from the championship rotation but more like the end-of-the-bench guys (not going to drop names because some people might take offense). Besides, even if it weren't sensible, it's still possible they trade anyone from the team not named Parker, Duncan, Ginobili, or Leonard. There still are teams that make stupid good offers.

Ayres - 6' 8.75" 6' 10" 240 7' 1" 8' 11" 5.5 31.0 35.0

J.Green- 6' 8" 6' 9" 217 7' 2.25" 8' 10.5" 9.8 29.5 32.5

Just watched some clips of him and he seems to have a lot more mobility and length than Ayres.

He definitely has a 1.25" advantage over Ayres in winspan and just .5" less standing reach. Green also seems to have better shooting and a better handle.

If Green is a replacement for Ayres, then I'm definitely all for it. I don't know exactly what the staff so in Ayres.

As a hustle guy, JaMychal Green is as good as it gets. In the Summer League he had so many put back dunks, so many aggressive rebounds, steals, and blocks...all that good stuff.

But the Spurs run a system, and I have no idea where JaMychal Green fits in offensively. Can he shoot 3's? Can he hit that mid-range jumper that he so rarely took during Summer league? Can he play in the post despite giving 4-5 inches to whoever is in there guarding him? I dunno. He's got to find his niche offensively, and it's going to be difficult without having any particular area of skill besides trying hard and hustling. I like him and want him to succeed, but every Spur has to be a threat offensively in order to help space the floor. And I don't know if JaMychal Green can do that right now. I hope he works on that 3 ball a lot this summer...

wildbill2u
08-08-2014, 04:20 PM
The Spurs don't usually rely on their PF or C to make 3s (with the notable exception of Bonner). But he boxes out and gets those rebounds that we need from a big. He seems to have that permanent motor that gives him a lot of put backs and moves pretty good off the pick and roll--against SL competition.

I hope he makes it because I love a guy who hustles like that kid, but he'll have to beat out a veteran like Ayers or Bonner to stay with the team.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – JaMychal Green will likely sign with the San Antonio Spurs after departing Friday from their affiliate team at the 2015 NBA D-League Showcase, sources told Yahoo Sports.

What’s holding up the Spurs’ plan to sign Green is they currently have the maximum 15 players on their roster and need to create roster space. The Memphis Grizzlies, Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers have also expressed interest in signing the free-agent forward, a source said. Green, 24, is averaging 23 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists this season for the Austin Spurs of the NBA Development League.

The 6-foot-9, 220-pounder participated in the Spurs’ training camp, but was cut Oct. 22. Green, who played college basketball at Alabama, spent time in the off-season working with the Spurs' renowned shooting coach Chip Engelland.

Yeah, anyone want to offer some ideas about how this will play out? Considering we already have Duncan/Splitter/Diaw/Baynes/Ayres, there's really no room for another big...even if you're just looking at garbage time minutes. And if you know he's not going to get any minutes, why sign him to a 10-day contract? What are they hoping to see in these 10 days?

It seems like this is clearly a move for the future (unless they plan on trading Ayres or something, which seems unlikely), but the 10-day contract is just throwing me off. If they're going to send him back to Austin, why only a 10-day contract?

My first guess was that it would be a two year deal with no guaranteed money in the second year, but that was based on the assumption that another team was ready to guarantee the rest of this season. The 10-day deal suggests that no other team was offering anything better.

In that case, look at the calendar. The Spurs have 17 days at home between the upcoming 2 game trip this week and the RRT. Two 10-day contracts will allow them to take a real long look at how he functions with the team and whether or not they want to extend his audition into the summer.

The 10 day contracts keep him off of another roster while they make a longer term decision.

I still wouldn't expect to see him much outside of garbage time. If he survives and gets a longer deal, then he'll probably get to go on the RRT and then head back to Austin.

the spurs have 10 days to trade Ayers for a better 3 than than Daye or an open roster spot. or else they're guilty of dickin around as usual.

With Patty back, they're more likely to feature 2 PG lineups with Manu or Green (or shudder... Marco or Bonner) at the 3. As long as Kawhi can take 40 minutes at the 3 come playoff time. Better than playing Daye.

The finances of this for Green are substantial, even if he doesn't stick. The top DLeague salary slots are 35K, IIRC. Two 10-day contracts will net him around 100K, plus one year of tenure towards NBA retirement benefits.

I know it's not a lot compared to nba money, but that's a hell of a pay raise for the average guy. Must be nice to have all the hard work pay off. Is it 100k/per contract?

Where is the idea coming from that Baynes will be restricted again?

Clubs who first bring in a player to the league have a certain number of years of control. It's pretty standard across all major sports. I forget what the NBA's version is ie 3 or 4 years and I am unsure if his first year had him on the roster enough times to warrant a year of service.

I wouldn't think "fit" is what JGreen is looking for, specifically. I would think playing time would be a bigger sticking point. If so, he can find it with either NY or MIL. I think it's possible that the Spurs wanted to sign him to a multi year non guaranteed contract close to the minimum (basically like a second round pick). Green could be looking for more guaranteed money or a deal that only lasts until the end of the season to keep his flexibility. With seemingly many other teams interested in him it makes sense to take a chance somewhere else.

Uh, no. They weren't working on a second 10 day, they were working on a real deal. When it became apparent that a deal wasn't going to be reached, there is no point in signing him to a second 10 day. Standard procedure is a contract for the rest of the year, guaranteed since we're past the cut date, and a non-guaranteed contract second year. JMG and his agent may have balked at that, but good luck trying anywhere to get just guaranteed money this year and free agency this summer. No one wants to put development time into a player they may only have for a few months.

Yeah, but Green can always get a non-guaranteed min deal. For all we know, the Spurs were only offering a three-year deal like Philly gave to McDaniels. A lot of things go into the negotiation besides the agent being misguided.

Again, though, Green wasn't very good. No need to worry about this.

True. It used to be the standard that a DLeaguer would have to take an unguaranteed second year as the price of signing for the remainder of the year. Think back to last summer and how some of those players, or more precisely their contracts, were used as ballast in multiple trades. Then they were cut by the last team to hold their contract, while being off the market for all or most of the summer. I would imagine that being a free agent from the beginning of the summer is a much better situation for most of these players.

Fuck Jeff Ayres and Matt Bonner

Misplaced. Like shooting the actors instead of the author of the play. :lol

JaMychal has three point range and isn't afraid to shoot. I wish the Spurs kept him instead of Anderson.

Yeah, his stat line from tonight's game looks nothing like Kyle's.

he was up against the Clippers though...

He was benched early... He's probably a good bench player but shouldn't be starting when James Ennis (a journeyman) had a better game against the Clippers and played 36 minutes. Still better than Ayers though... and Daye... which was my point at the time.

Except that I'm pretty sure he was on the same team with all three of them and they were all better than he was. Really happy for him that he managed to stick with a team, but let's not pretend he was anything other than an NBA body when he was in the organization.

At the timem, he wouldn't have changed matters I agree... but he was both younger and played better than the other two IMO. He has stuck around and the other two are gone. He probably should not be starting, but he's an NBA player... I have been wrong b4... but I did think Jamychal was going to be an NBA player (Ayers never looked like one to me, or Daye)... To me they were just retained bc they were under contract...

Ayres and Daye ... if a team is having four and five year vets with dozens of starts and thousands of minutes in the NBA between them go to summer league ... then it's time for the team to come to its senses and just cut those guys, they obviously can't play

Well I'd have probably preferred keeping him over Daye, just because Green worked harder, and I didn't believe that Daye was ever going to give any effort beyond what he'd always done. Green getting to play for an injury-riddled Grizzlies team was the perfect gig. Nobody behind him, no threat of losing minutes, no expectations. Probably safe to say he would not have grown as much in the Spurs' system.

Ayers wasn't a great player, but he was solid enough to eat up minutes to save the other bigs in the rotation, which was all that was asked of him. Green certainly couldn't have done that.

I'm not sure there's any way to justify the opinion that he played better than both of them, tho. Daye would have been ripe for someone with a pulse to give Pop a reason to cut him.

We will just disagree. I thought Ayers was awful and Daye only brought streaky shooting at the cost of defense. Green is a rotation player. Ayers never had Green shooting or he'd still be in the league and he had awful hands or he'd still be in the league as well. Daye.. He only had bad shooting going for him.

Ill share some I interviews Spurs gave about him that I found last playoffs, Danny said Spurs wanted him midseason but ended up with Reggie bc they were looking for shooting at a different position... It's too late at night to dig that up, but Spurs had some buyers remorse and wanted him after cutting Daye...

How about a return for him? Probably within our budget and can make 3s.

Was a huge fan of Green's when he was here. If I remember correctly I think Pop really liked him too.

Green is a UFA. Clippers probably going to blow their free agency load on two better players.
