This is a good deal because he is coming back for the vet minimum. I think the Spurs are seeing they cannot trust Daye, so they need a reliable veteran in that spot. Good deal for the Spurs and Bonner.

:lol at people for thinking this is a bad thing - locker room veteran who has been a part of 2 championship squads, will only be used to rest TD minutes this upcoming season, and stretch the floor in certain situations. Not bad for a guy near the very end of the bench, while getting the vet min..
anakha
07-13-2014, 04:22 PM
If the league will subsidize part of the veteran minimum as discussed before, the financial hit to the Spurs will be, well, minimal. :p:
I do hope this doesn't mean they'll leave out Baynes in favor of an empty roster spot.

:lol Have that same reaction in the back of my brain, but I realized it's him playing serious playoff minutes that I hate, and since he lost that role this year, I'm glad he'll be back. A good locker room guy, knows the system and so can help communicated it to KA, I'm sure he's fun to be around so good for team morale, and he'll be useful to soak up front court minutes during blowouts in the RS, so Duncan and Diaw can get some rest and stay fresh for the playoffs. I'm fine with the signing. :tu

The guy is a great regular season player that spaces the floor. For the vet min and on a 1 year deal, this is a good signing by the Spurs. Save Duncan in the playoffs. If the Spurs make a move for Marion, Aryes needs to get the boot, possibly Daye. Seems like those two are fighting for a roster spot right now.

I actually im on the Bonner hate bandwagon, but for the vet minimum its a good deal. The regular season is long and he'll just be an extra big off the bench.
Spurs need a 3 point shooting big to face the Thunder. Bonner still has his uses and for the vet minimum, it costs the Spurs practically nothing.
The roster is getting crowded though. I hope they somehow unload Ayres.

Honestly I'd probably do that trade in a heartbeat. We're always drafting somewhere around 55-60 every year anyway. We'd be losing next-year's Marcus Denmon for a roster spot this year. I'm down.

I don't mind. I'd rather have him than Daye. I like him in limited role which Pop should have been doing past 5 years. Bonner's a good natured dude and smart player, good citizen etc ... but def not the best basketball player in the world. I just feel bad for him with how every single brotha feels like he can score on him (usually true). I mean really who can Bonner guard, ha. Matt Bonner might actually turn out to be a decade long Spur and that's just WEIRD.

Got to say though that Pop putting Bonner in starting lineup in game 5 against OKC seemed to change the whole dynamic of that series when Ibaka came back in game 3 and they seemed to totally grab the momentum back.
Bonner did not do much at all, but just making that move seemed to fluster them.

Ever since Bonner has not been our starting center and has essentially been a 12th man I have really liked him on this team. His shot seems to be better in the playoffs.

Bonner may not have scored a lot, but Ibaka was forced to guard him on the perimiter, which opened up the lane for the Spurs. Definately changed the series!
Ibaka came back and turned things around for OKC. Pop countered with Bonner and that turned things around for the Spurs. Thank you Bonner!
