In many peoples eyes, Messi was, note how I said was simply because I doubt he will ever go back to his level, the best they ever seen.

but messi couldnt carry argentina to glory, so Im assuming argentinians will keep glorifying maradona even more. So therefore you are correct

Who knows... It's not looking good for Messi right now but maybe he reinvent himself and come back strong...

Zidane's most legendary performance wasn't in 98, it was in 2006 when he schooled Brazil as a tired old shit bag... The problem with Messi is that his playing style is a lot harder on his body and his body looks done... Not sure what he can do about that...

unfortunately zidan's 06 cup is basically remembered for his incident in the finale... although the PK he scored in that game was DIIIRTY as fuck

Messi's goal scoring record last year secured his place in the discussion. But we are 2/3rds past Messi's career and so his best days behind him. At this moment I don't see him on the same level as Maradona and lesser than Zidane.

Why do folks put so much importance on a single month of a player's career? Sure, it's a WC. It's huge and is definitely important to play your best during that time but it's not THAT important. Let's say Gotze doesn't make that and Argentina lucks out on the penalties again. Would that have magically made Messi better than Maradona?

No simply winning doesn't change everything, having a legendary showing at the WC does... And how can you ask why... The reason is because we're talking about being the best ever... I love Messi but someone like Zidane has a lot more legendary performances at the highest level : Messi has nothing that comes close to Zidane's goal vs Leverkusen in the CL Finals or to his masterpiece against Brazil in 2006. It's not everything but of course it matters.

What you do when it matters the most does really count for something when you're talking about the top 5 ever :

Zidane won a WC playing pretty pedestrian all tournament long but scoring two headers in the final and everyone was like "wow, Zidane" when he actually didn't make anything special. In 2006 the same shit, he actually played like crap during the group stage and got bailed out by his teammates to make it out of that round (he played the first two games that France didn't win and was suspended in the 3rd which France won and allowed them to advance. Then he had two good games against Spain and Brazil and went back to sucking caping it off with that stupid sent off in the WC final).

Messi has 3 Champions league and two goals in the two finals he played one who won the game. He has also pretty much every individual accomplish you can think of. Messi rivals in history are Distefano, Pele, Cruyff and Maradona. Zidane isn't on his level.

Messi doesn't have these kind of performances that people will remember long after he retires... Sorry DAF but Zidane is up there with the greatest... Messi as well but more like in a Wilt / regular season kind of way...

99% of the folks that actually know about football agree that Messi > Zidane isn't even debatable.

I didn't think there was a doubt about it even before the WC. After it, I am sure this talk should be over. Maradona will always be Argies best player.

:lol at counting the CL that Ronaldinho single-handedly won while Messi was injured... Shameless stuff...

Yeah, it's not like Messi was the star of the de-facto final of that year in the semis against Chelsea. :lol

They're just so different in the huevos/competitive department, tbh... If you just reduce the criteria to bare numbers or even innate talent, then it's really debatable and you could argue Messi is better...

But there's much more to it, and especially in Argentina there's a whole social aspect to it too.

Diego simply hated to lose. He would put the team on his back, run like there was no tomorrow, cheat and steal if he had to, because he really, really cared. When we lost in 1990, dude was crying inconsolably. He played with bum feet, infiltrated, whatever it took, he was out there, and everybody noticed he was out there. He could miss a pass, miss a chance, miss a free kick... but he always made shit happen. Always.

I'm grateful to Messi, he was integral to making it this far in this World Cup. I don't know if his passivity has to do with some physical problem or what, but if this is the new Messi, he's just won't measure up.

Why? Because Messi won the Golden ball of the WC? :lol

Look, comparing Zidane to Messi is like comparing Olajuwon to Lebron James. Hakeem is a great player, one of the top 10 greastest of all-time with a couple of very clutch seasons but anyone with a brain knows that Lebron is clearly the better player.
