The last couple of sentence captured more of the essence of why the Spurs were so successful, it's more to do with their ability to develop their players, and the reason they can do that is that management as a clear view of the team's needs, draft the players with the right raw skill sets, and then help them further fill that role by developing them.

It's great to have a player like Duncan to help define the required roles to plug, but management should get a lot of credit for identifying needs and addressing them, as compared to getting big names and get ratings.
