Then at least people can get a one added if they already have his jersey. Would just be a little lopsided.

He wore 14 in college and won a champ there, probably the reason.

I think it'll help him with his confidence because #14 was his college number for 4 years at UNC.

He had to put in this request 2 years in advance with the Spurs to get this change approved. That's commitment. It clearly means something to him.

There goes the 1/2/3/4/5 jersey number lineup. Anderson was never going to work at center anyway.

Leave it to Danny, answering my question before ST :lol

An amatuer source who usually reports Spurs news correctly has recently said that Danny Verde might change his number to be his beloved #14 (maybe it's been stated already and I overlooked it). What do you think he should do if this is true? Keep the number he has worn in both his finals or should he consider his 3 years settling for #4 over and snatch the number he feels is meant for him to wear?

Spurs Mailbag is our friend.

Question: Why do you wear the number 4?

DG: Because I couldn’t get the number fourteen, which was my number in college and high school growing up. It was a town number, there’s a history behind it. I didn’t get a chance to get it when I was here obviously, because it’s Gary Neal’s number. One day hopefully I can talk him into changing it, but it’s closest to four, twenty-four was taken.

Question: What’s the story behind 14?

DG: Growing up in the town, I used to play football, and the head football coach for my town, his brother used to wear fourteen and he had passed away. So the leading captain or the best leader would wear number fourteen, it used to be a quarterback or running back, in honor of his name. When I transferred schools I kinda took the number with me, I’ve kept it going since then.

I met the dude preseason of 2011 and he said he'd change back to #14 when he had the chance, saved me some dough! :lol Now we gotta wait for Bonner to retire, does Kawhi take back #15, I think not.

#4 looks better imo but he's been rocking #14 since high school and his UNC days so I get it. I don't care what # he wears as long as it doesn't affect his play tbh.

Lol, he wants to be Gary Neal soooo badly that he's going to adopt Neal's old number.... Why would he change numbers after all his success with number 4? He's going to jinx it all by changing numbers. -Remember what happened to Michael Jordan when he briefly switched to #45?

I think he should stay with #4. That's how I know him as a Spur. He's made his reputation on the Spurs, played in 2 finals, won his championship and broke a finals record for 3 pointers wearing #4...
-just my opinion

I think he wants to change it because he feels that he wants to leave some single digit numbers for future players to have. AJ has 6, Leonard will have 2 retired, Parker will have 9 retired, so his 14 will be just fine. Only Silas has a teen number that is and will be retired any time soon.

Not sure Danny is getting his number retired, even if he's already a better player than Avery ever was.
