This is just ridiculous and stupid to have these huge gif files in people's sigs. It's such a watse of bandwidth.

TPark - 4.25 MB
http://www.digitalutopia.org/images/edmonds2.gif

Horry for 3! - 2.61 MB
http://www.shrani.si/pics/iexplore27800.gif

gospursgojas - 1.27 MB
http://www.shrani.si/pics/bowen_sz37266.gif

IX Equilibrium - 0.99 MB
http://img257.echo.cx/img257/914/lebanner1dl.gif

Dex - 0.97 MB
http://home.comcast.net/~slayermin/barry_3.gif

Animated GIF is the most misused file format I've ever seen. Animated GIF cannot fucking support a continuous color spectrum as in video. These tiny ass 5 second videos would be 1/10th the size and look a hell of a lot better if they were compressed with XVid, DiVX, or H.264 (ie, the new Quicktime or the x264 project). GIF relies on having only a few colors and having each of those colors not changing locally. I.e., you pick a black pixel at random and every one of the pixels near to it is the same shade of black.

This is the kind of video animated GIF is designed for:

TrainWreck2100 - 0.06 MB
http://img270.imageshack.us/img270/8904/avatar3674og.gif

This is a 13-second video clip, and it's 0.06 MB. Why? Because there's not a lot of colors and and they don't change much. You might say the information content of this video is low.... which is exactly why GIF is a much better format for this video than is DiVX, XViD, H.263, H.264, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, or any other format derived from JPEG, which require a continous color spectrum to give good results with high compression.

I was going to post something similar a few weeks ago. When traffic on the forum is average (like now) it doesn't matter that much. But during the post season, people's signatures were killing the load time on the forum with 600+ users online.

No one gives a shit about seeing Jim Edmonds every thread. Why shold I waste 4.5 MB of my bandwidth every time I want to read a thread? I like the pics in the sigs. 10-50 KB is fine. 1-4.5 MB per post is fucking ridiculous. It's a huge waste of bandwidth and RAM.

baseline bum
08-21-2005, 01:32 PM
On a 100 KB/s link TPark's sig will take at least 43.5 seconds to load. Horry for 3? 26.7 seconds. That's assuming I'm getting the full speed of the link, which I'm not due to queueing in routers between my computer and the server. So I have to wait 43.5 seconds to open another thread? Fuck that.

I see Baseline Bum's point. But something else is the point to me. It's the increase on the forum load during busy times. Unless you mean that you want me to turn off everyone's signatures all together. :lol

Either way, people need to get the stuff that's copyrighted out of the signatures anyway. I'd would say that's everybody that's listed above.

NBA photos are okay (that's covered in our Terms of Use). NBA videos are not.

The photos in people's sigs are cool and add a lot to the forum. They're not the problem. Most of them are < 50 KB, which is fine. Your animated GIF is also an example of something the format can achieve good compression on since most of the file is concentrated in a very small set of colors, and that's why it only comes in at 37 KB. It's these gifs made from live video that are ridiculous.

I don't get the argument that they put too much load on the forum. It's not like they're hosted on the forum's server. Also they get cached locally, so you're not downloading them every thread either.

Usually I find them annoying so I guess I'm playing devil's advocate here, but other than the RAM thing these complaints don't make much sense to me.

All I know is that during the Finals, we had to disable signatures because it was slowing down the server so much. As soon as we did, the server was right back up to speed. I don't know the technical part of it, but it definitely effects the load if everyone is in one the thread (for example the game blog thread) and the signatures are all on.

Either way, I never bitched that people had to take them out for that reason. I just said that all copyrighted video needs to get out of people's signatures.

Say you can open 10 parallel connections. Every image on the page is a new parallel connection.... so now only one of your 10 connections is requesting information from Kori's server. It's asking for transmissions at a much lower rate because it's recieving data from Kori's server at a much lower rate since the other 9 connections are requesting large images/videos and thus using all the bandwidth. Meanwhile, since you've established the connection with Kori's server and have not closed the connection her server has to keep the connection open to you, even though you're only requesting info from her server at a much slower rate. The other 9 connections remain open for a long time because they're each requesting a very large object (ie, TPark's video) and all competing with each other for the bandwidth. If your connection is slow the video files ensure that some of the packet requests from Kori's server timeout, and thus you re-request them automatically and the server resends them. Because it takes forever to finally get the info on the page that comes from Kori's server it can't close the connection and open a new one with for user who's trying to read the thread if it's already at high capacity.

These objects (ie, the videos, pics, scripts, etc.) are usually re-downloaded every time you view the page from a new browser process.

Thanks Base. I knew there was a technical explanation eventhough I didn't know what it was. All I know is that during the playoff games, if I disabled the signatures the forum ran at normal rate. If I left them on, it slowed down a lot.

That being said. I'm not asking anyone to change their signatures, except those who have copyrighted video in their sigs.

It's actually two different complaints.

1. Baseline's complaint of people using HUGE gifs that take forever to download (and also slow the server during peak times).

2. My complaint of anyone who has copyrighted video of any sort in their sigs.

I love my Spurs, I love sports, but I do not have to put the gif of "THE CATCH" (Scott Frost to Matt Davison vs Mizzou 1997) or "THE PLAY" (Eric pitch to Mike Stuntz, pass back to Crouch for a TD vs OU) to show my allegiance to my Men Of Corn...(Me C/O 95)... I've had sigs turned off for about a year now because I am on dialup. A couple of weeks back I turned them back on and I felt like I was looking at threads full of pictures and video rather than actual threads, so I quickly ended that and turned them back off.

Simple Solution:

Me or Kori will go in and take out any huge files from signatures. The waste of bandwidth and the fact that the site could get in trouble is enough reason to understand this stance. Kori lets everyone do anything, so not having an animated gif that is either too large or copyrighted isn't asking too much.

I'm guessing most in here are adult enough to understand.

Thaaa-a-aaa-aaa-aanks.

:hat

The bandwidth issue from your side of things shouldn't be too much of an issue except at the busiest of busy times. From my side it's a huge annoyance to download large video sigs though. By all means leave ones like what Ginofan and Manumania have though. They're pretty small and well-done.

Animated gif is horrible for video, because unlike MPEG, there is no time-domain compression I believe. If you've ever ripped video to your hard drive without a hardware DVD capture card you'll understand how ridiculous it would ever be to have video not compressed temporally.

TPark, there's no reason to get your ball and go home.

I just asked for the copyrighted video to get out of the sigs. Your sig is copyrighted by MLB. I understand the guy who gave it to you told you that he somehow got permission, but that's not the same as you getting the express written consent to have it. Either way, keep posting and just take it out. This isn't just about you -- it's about everyone who has copyrighted video in their sig.

Thanks.

Anyone else who has signature issues, can email me at [email protected] or message me on the board.

Also, if anyone needs someone to make them a custom signature with their username or whatever, that can be arranged.
