Which would you rather have at the backup SF position (assuming less than the full MLE is used to acquire)?

Singleton has height and youth. Marion has experience and age.

I think Marion is the smarter player of both. So Marion.

Some around here complained that the Spurs settled for Kawhi Leonard instead of trying to acquire Singleton in the 2011 draft.

Marion. Speaking of failed Wizards combo-forwards, what ever happened to Jan Vesely?

Since the Spurs aren't eating any guaranteed money, and can't retract Baynes qualifying offer, we have 15 players, so my answer would be "neither".

baynes > both

singleton if chip thinks he can improve his shooting > marion

marion > singleton if there isn't believe from PATFO in making him better than he was in WAS

That was me lol. I thought Chris Singleton was the next Ron Artest. Athletic enough to shut down the wing, but strong and powerful enough to defend guys like Melo in the post. Completely missed on him. I mean, when the Spurs announced Kawhi Leonard, I had no idea who he was. I thought they drafted a guy who couldn't shoot and just had a little bit of defensive potential over an NBA ready defender and a guy that could shoot and score the ball. I absolutely love how much I missed that draft. That's why I'm not in the Spurs front office baha

Regarding the shooting I think it really is like: Hey, this guy can do a lot of things and what holds him back is only his shooting form. Lets ask Chip, if he can fix it. If he thinks he can, we get this player on a huge discount.

There was that nice Grantland piece about Chip and it shows how valuable he is.

Don't be so hard on yourself. Kawhi is precisely the athlete enough to shut down the wing and strong enough to defend a guy like Melo in the post. You were halfway there, you just didn't research the draft prospects. Singleton would have been a great acquisition in addition to Kawhi, all the spurs had to do was give Blair or Neal up for an open roster spot and a top 58 protected 2nd.

Don't want to make it look like I'm promoting Grantland (I'm not even linking it) but their Veseley/Kawhi piece some about a year ago makes me wonder, if Singleton could have been much better in SA (not saying FinalsMVP) and Kawhi would have been a bust in WAS. Maybe it's about Chip, maybe about the organisation, maybe just Pop.

I don't know if i worded my post well. I am not saying the spurs should have traded Kawhi with Blair or Neal. I'm saying Blair or Neal should have been dumped, for the anything they weren't dumped for, to make a spot for Singleton to backup Kawhi.

I don't think Kawhi would have been a bust in Was. Kawhi is a winner. Pop and Chip brought him along quicker. But i suspect Kawhi would have brought himself up anywhere, eventually. Especially the up and coming Wizards.

So the pick is between a guy who has done nothing in the NBA and probably never will versus a guy who has done stuff in the NBA since forever and even was last year and will likely be a really nice backup for next year at least?

Marion in limited minutes would be more effective. He can still turn on the defense. And imo Marion is one of the best defenders ever at the SF. Dallas will miss him.

Won't be coming to the Spurs per par.

Who was that other guy that kept claiming "my sources say" before? I think he started posting the previous season.

Marion was really bad last year, tbh, even his defense fell off..he would have to go through quite a resurgence to make himself useful again..

I don't want any washed-up "big names", as I've said before..can't acquire players that are accustomed to having guaranteed minutes and a locked role..

Both would be the BACKUP 3 along with Ginobili, Anderson and anyone else Pop wants to play there. Whoever is picked up might get 7-10 mins a game if that. The position is so insignificant that PATFO may not pick up anyone...
